The IOP program for this place is just terrible. During the group session we had 3 different therapists take over which seems too much to get any effective work done when the group is constantly rotating the therapist. I only went one time and I can tell right away that the therapists didn't care at all for the people in the group, they were just going through the motions. They were constantly on their phone and laptop and were very disengaged the whole time. One therapist was extremely passive aggressive with me which I thought was hilarious because we just got done talking about effective communication Just don't bother with this place. I recommend API if you want a program that works and people who actually care.

Before starting this IOP program, I was in a dark place. A choking incident with food left me with debilitating anxiety, daily panic attacks, and intrusive thoughts that made it impossible to show up in my life. I had to reduce my work hours and felt completely stuck. This program gave me exactly what I needed tangible skills from CBT, ACT, and DBT, individual therapy, and group support. It wasn t easy to accept that I needed this level of care, and progress wasn t always linear, but it was so worth it. On the hardest days, knowing I had a team and group members who truly listened made all the difference.I put in the work, and over time, I saw the shifts. Small at first, but they added up. Anxiety doesn't rule my life anymore and I'm able to show up in my life the way I want to

Accepted Insurance

Discovery Mood & Anxiety Program – San Diego works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.
outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

I went there my 8th grade year and i loved her. The therapist was so kind and it really felt like a family and a safe place in there. I’m glad I got the help I need and know I know how to help myself in those situations I was struggling with. I miss it everyday though!

I went here over a year ago and at first I hated it. Not the people but the program. I want many willing to Focus on myself and what I needed to work on. The family therapy is what saved me. Looking back on it now if I didn’t do the family therapy my mom wouldn’t have changed her outlook and I wouldn’t be where I am today with out the therapist nick. So shoutout to you and this program.

Thank you so much for sharing! Wishing you continued success on your journey.

If I were able to give this horrendous place 0 stars, I would. The way they treat those who do not progress at the speed at which they think they should, is disgusting. They are more worried about getting paid per patient that is in their program, than they are about helping their patients. They lie, cannot keep a consistent therapist per patient, do not communicate AT ALL with the parents of the teens in the program, and seem to just worry about the ones who are going to be success stories, instead of those who they are watching actively drown in the depression and anxiety. I would never recommend this facility to anyone. The only thing they are good at is lying, psychologically abusing patients, and treating those who fall behind as less than.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Thank you for your feedback. We take great pride in the quality care each client and family receives while in our program. For the sake of privacy compliance, we are not able to publicly discuss any specifics but feel free to contact us at feedback@discoverybh.com.

My son started Discovery SD after completing another IOP virtual program and actually becoming worse. My son was not in a good place when beginning the program and did both the PHP and the IOP programs. The staff is absolutely amazing! Nick, Kara, Namde and Joe are the staff I had the most interaction with and were exceptional. The program also includes support for parents with multiple weekly meetings. One of the meetings is mandatory but the optional meetings were so helpful that I truly enjoyed them and was bummed when I couldn't attend. The staff were always attentive to all concerns, questions and always responded quickly. I truly believe this program saved our son's life. They gave our family the tools necessary to help him and our family move forward. They helped my son find his purpose in life, happiness, effective ways to communicate and ways to deal with his anxiety and "dark" thoughts. I will be forever grateful for the changes they helped my son make and the hope they gave him and our family.
