About Aurora Behavioral Healthcare San Diego Hospital

Aurora Behavioral Health Care is a behavioral health treatment center located in San Diego, California. They provide services for youth and adults of all ages, including inpatient and outpatient treatment programs. Specialty programs are available for military personnel, veterans, seniors, first responders, and clients with co-occurring mental health disorders. They accept private insurance, including Medicare and MediCal.

The inpatient program helps you begin recovery in a safe and supportive environment, with 24/7 support. You can participate in all of the available programs or only the ones suited to your specific needs. There are many services offered, including counseling, group sessions, and family therapy. There is a separate program for youth aged 5 to 12. The youth program includes similar therapy and education and also provides daily classroom instruction so they can keep up in school during treatment.

For those who can live at home or in sober living, you can take advantage of a variety of outpatient programs. There’s a full day program, one that meets up to 10 hours per week, and one that meets a few hours per week. You’ll get an assessment to determine the best option for you. Services in treatment are similar to inpatient care.

One aspect of this program that stands out to reviewers is their commitment to catering each treatment to fit the needs of specialty populations, including military personnel and first responders. The team recognizes that these groups deal with unique issues that aren’t as prevalent within the general population, such as combat-related PTSD. They have dedicated units to serve these clients, staffed by clinicians who are experienced in working with such groups.

I was here decades ago. I wont speak about my personal experience, but the experience my father had getting me out. This hospital didn't do their due diligence and admitted me without confirmation of parental custody, which my mother did not have. When my father had called to get information about if I was located there, they refused to give him information, even though he was my listed and court-allocated guardian-- it wasn't until he showed up at the facility that they finally looked into legal records and realized their mistake. My father has recently passed, and did not want to deal with this facility. But now that he is gone, others should know the struggle he went through due to this facility's negligence.Granted, things may have changed since 2005, but from the other reviews-- it seems possibly unlikely.

My adult daughter was transferred here on a hold by Kaiser, our family insurance provider. It was a very scary time for us as a family. It became evident that the front office wasn't communicating well with the back nursing station at this facility. My fianc and I visited every day and each day we were asked for a case number. We didn't know the case number, my daughter didn't know the case number. A nurse at the back station allowed me to use a pen and pointed at a series of numbers on a bracelet my daughter was wearing and said that was the case number. When my fianc took his turn to visit, the staff in the front area said the numbers provided were not the case number. The following day was the last day of my daughter's stay, she reached out to me to share she would be discharged from the facility. After not hearing from her for several hours, I called the facility where I was greeted by a staff member who seemed more interested in upsetting me than helping, which felt very strange for a mental health facility. Even after I explained that I did not know the case number and the experience trying to figure out the case number, the staffer attempted to brush off my request to get a message to my daughter by telling me that she is 21 years old. I am not sure how much more consent is needed when my kid called her family trying to coordinate her ride home. I think the front office needs some serious training on how to handle their public. In the end, the guy remained unhelpful leaving my daughter and I completely confused and frustrated until her discharge.

Accepted Insurance

Aurora Behavioral Healthcare San Diego Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. Aurora San Diego provides outpatient care in the form of partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for those whose acute psychiatric symptoms require a safe and therapeutic environment. They also provide intensive outpatient programs for chemical dependency and dual diagnosis that specifically address the needs of individuals in recovery from substance abuse. Their team of outpatient specialists recognize and understand the needs of patients dealing with emotional and psychological disorders and chemical dependency who are looking to continue to titrate to lower levels of care. The goal of our programs is to help individuals develop their recovery and achieve success in their lives.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements. Aurora San Diego provides inpatient care and partial hospitalization for children ages 5-12 whose acute symptoms require a safe and therapeutic environment. They also provide inpatient care and partial hospitalization for acute mental health issues and chemical dependency intensive outpatient programs for adolescents ages 13 through 17 and adults. Their team of specialists recognize and understand the unique needs of child and adolescent patients dealing with emotional and psychological disorders and chemical dependency.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

The goal of couples therapy in California is to strengthen the couple's relationship. The therapist may take one or more approaches to counseling which may include the Gottman method, emotionally focused therapy, behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic couple's therapy.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Substances can prevent the absorption of nutrients and cause damage to your body's systems. Nutrition therapy in California addresses the deficiencies in vitamins and minerals that are caused by substance abuse.

I went here 10 years ago and I still think about how awful the treatment was. At 14 I had any ‘comfort items’ taken away, was isolated from others my entire stay due to drawing on my arms (which was washed off within my first hour of arrival), and was even nicknamed ‘10-foot’ by staff because of my forced isolation from the groups. There were children as young as 10 who were essentially tacked and brought into the ‘booty juice room’ for behaviors that should have been met with direct counseling instead of being tranquilized. 0/10 do not recommend for anyone

This is the worst facility in San Diego! Imagine how venerable you are in this time and the first thing they do is take you to a ugly, cold room and strip you down naked. They lock you up and do nothing for the treatment of Individuals. All they do is cause more damage. Same as sharp mesa vista and API. Sharp Mcdonald center is so much better but it's only 30 days.

If you are looking to go to an institution where they can hold you against you and your families will for no legitimate reason other than to assert their dominance. If you want to come in and be stripped search. If you want to be put in a room with only cold water handles for both the sink and shower. If you want to be treated among many others that have very different conditions in spite of going in for a specific treatment and be placed with someone on suicide watch while you are detoxing from alcohol. Where policies are at the whim of the person you are dealing with. And your treatment will be modified based on their momentary disposition. Then this is the place for you. I’ve been to quite a few treatment centers over the years both here in San Diego, Riverside and out of the county. I have never experienced a facility with less care and appropriate medication protocols, cleanliness etc than any other facility I’ve ever experienced. I would say you will find better care in most any other healthcare center than this place.

DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE My daughter was sent here to the child program then discharged weeks ago. She attempted suicide and was there for a month. To say that was the worst month of my life is a complete understatement. From the calls I’ve received from my daughter before they took away her “phone privileges”. First of all I do not believe that communication should be a privilege period what so ever. Apparently from the one of the VERY few updates I would get about her from staff she was being aggressive with staff and they dragged her by her hair into their isolation room and sedated. without my consent with is absolute madness as I had no idea of the situation what so ever till afterwards. Of course A CHILD would get upset when you take away her only contact with the world. I find this completely insane that this hospital in still in operation.

I have to keep you guys at these three stars, because you have issues that need to be addressed and squashed IMMEDIATELY, as they are a detriment to everything you are trying to do. The disparity in information sharing you guys have between shifts creates issues between the nurses and the patients that are a detriment to actually getting anyone better. I was here when my wife was brought here on a 5150 hold. She had a stuffed elephant that she has had for almost 20 years. Sure it’s childish maybe. But who are you to tell her it’s fine, just to go back on your word when she wasn’t there and take it away. This is insane. How can I trust you when you consistently make yourselves look like the bad guys? It makes no sense for you to lie about something like that to someone who is having a mental breakdown. I have a bachelors in psychology myself, and I am telling you that these issues are why your treatments are likely ineffective. I brought this up before, but clearly it isn’t high enough. Not only this, my wife and I were sitting in the visitor room and she had her leg on mine and a nurse told us to please maintain boundaries to which I said OK sure that That is fine. The issue is that when I came to say goodbye to her After her sister had left, the charge nurse have the gall to come up to me in a rude manner and state that he had told me once already (he didn’t, another nurse did) that we need to keep boundaries when all I had done was give my wife a hug and a kiss, meanwhile various other people were doing the exact same thing the entirety of visiting hours and her brother and sister had seen this as well, so please tell me where in the rules does it say anything about boundaries and why your charge nurse thinks that it’s appropriate to send another person to go stop something without giving them instructions on what they actually want. Do you want us to stay on the other side of the room or do you want us to simply not engage in any form of PDA? because clearly you weren’t clear, so once again how can I trust you have the best care or have the patients best interest in mind when you consistently make these kind of mistakes?? there’s not even a pamphlet that has the rules on it. You have to go out of your way to see that and I’m sitting here reading them on my computer right now and I surely don’t see anything about that so please deal with this so that you can become a more respectable institution. The people you have there are great, but clearly the training is lacking, and clearly the connection between shifts is frayed in such a way that results in a detriment to patient. If my wife has another attempt after this, I will not hesitate to persue legal action.

When I was here, the psychiatrist ask me "was I on drugs" when I told him the reason why I wanted to kill myself, and he didn't ask it in a serious manner, he asked it in a joking/condescending way. Another thing when someone was crying in the hallway I heard the nurse say "if you keep crying you will be stuck here longer" they didn't even try to comfort them, overall this place made my mental health worse, it felt terrible the nurses weren't nice they acted like everyone committed a crime and deserved to be judged and disciplined

Very disappointed in the mental Healthcare system right now. This hospital was very unproffesional, one of the nurses yelled at the group claiming all of us were in there because of our own fault. One kid was in there for adhd and that's it, the hospital kept him for weeks over christmas too. The place is a prison that makes money off of residential fees and insane medical expenses. I couldn't believe how left in the dust these poor kids were. They have to wait almost 3 days to talk to a doctor and it's not even in person. It's on a zoom call where the doctor wears a suit and underwear to talk to you. He refused to look at my history and just decided it was an allergic reaction to marijuana. Which was completely false because I've been using medically for 3 years and have had my issues since I was young kid. They gave me a medicine that did absolutely nothing for the 3 days I was there. Eventually I had to pull out AMA with my parents because they wanted to keep me on Christmas. This place is not for the patient. It's for money, cold, lifeless money. And wouldn't you know it, I finally got a real psychiatrist and nothing they mentioned in the hospital was ever in my diagnosis. They completely fabricated my problem so they could keep me there and give me pills I didn't even need.
