About Aurora Behavioral Healthcare San Diego Hospital

The inpatient program helps you begin recovery in a safe and supportive environment, with 24/7 support. You can participate in all of the available programs or only the ones suited to your specific needs. There are many services offered, including counseling, group sessions, and family therapy. There is a separate program for youth aged 5 to 12. The youth program includes similar therapy and education and also provides daily classroom instruction so they can keep up in school during treatment.

For those who can live at home or in sober living, you can take advantage of a variety of outpatient programs. There’s a full day program, one that meets up to 10 hours per week, and one that meets a few hours per week. You’ll get an assessment to determine the best option for you. Services in treatment are similar to inpatient care.

One aspect of this program that stands out to reviewers is their commitment to catering each treatment to fit the needs of specialty populations, including military personnel and first responders. The team recognizes that these groups deal with unique issues that aren’t as prevalent within the general population, such as combat-related PTSD. They have dedicated units to serve these clients, staffed by clinicians who are experienced in working with such groups.

DO NOT GO HERE OR SEND YOUR KIDS HERE!!! Went here in 2021. The staff is absolutely atrocious in their handling of patients. It’s just drugging you and sedating you. The worst part is that they give sedatives in the buttocks area to people who have clearly been raped. This is a complete violation of their body and re-traumatizes them. It’s like you’re in an Insane Asylum and they keep you prisoner. They don’t care to know your background or why you are currently doing the things you are doing. They villainize and demonize you and it shows on their faces. They are not a caring or compassionate staff. While I was there they didn’t care or take the time to understand me. The psychiatrist I had didn’t even take time to help me with what I actually needed. I got that later from someone else. There’s no deep investigative work on their part that they do with the patients to really unpack their internal issues. It’s a sorry excuse for psychiatric care. They are also not diligent in protecting certain patients from other patients.

So my experience at aurora was okay let’s start with the food, the food was not the best not to say it was all bad but some food was just terrible and their were times I didn’t eat because of it. Now let’s move onto the staff too be honest the staff was really nice to me, but based on how I had seen them interact with other patients I believe they were nice to me cause their wasn’t truly anything “wrong” with me I was put on a 72 hour hold for potential suicide which I never attempted just thought about it but that’s a whole other thing, so being their I was fine I just had a low moment and I didn’t believe I belonged their but I knew I was gonna stay for the three days so I powers through it because I was okay I talked with all the staff on their careers and why they chose it cause I am always curious on peoples careers so I had no problem with the staff and they loved me but with other patients is where I felt so sad, their was an elderly woman there, who was telling the staff she felt like she was going to have a heart attack and they just kept telling her to sit down and the nurse would come and help, like if someone is stating their going to have a heart attack a nurse isn’t going to be much help she needed a doctor or an ambulance but they brushed her off, at one point she went up to a staff member saying please help me and the staff member told her to sit down with a stern tone like Jesus this old lady needs your help and your doing nothing to help her, not to mention this old lady had no teeth so she couldn’t chew her food and the way they tried to help her was chopping up her food really small but it wasn’t enough this lady wasn’t eating at one point she was crying saying she needs to be in a hospital facility that can actually help her cause she can’t even eat the food. Which I believe is true cause this hospital just isn’t trained to deal with her type of care. Than on my second to last day their was a new patient and she had told me and other patients that she was thrown to the ground by police before coming here and felt like she has a concussion and another resident pointed out that she was slurring her words and she needed to let staff know, tell me why when she went to the staff they just said oh your vitals are fine just lay down like just cause someone vitals are fine don’t mean their okay it took her having to yell at them to finally help her and give her some shot to feel better and it did, I feel like unless your like me and are “normal” I say that word loosely, your treated a certain way, and I wanted to speak out but I was afraid of them keeping me longer if I did so I didn’t so that’s why I am writing this review so that the staff can treat this patients with kindness and respect. Another thing is I believe they need to have more stuff for the patients to do cause it was so boring in their, they had two tvs and mind you we were never told we could use the second one, the one tv sometimes had something boring on their so what else could i do couldn’t read cause their were like three books their and 2 word searches and a couple of puzzles like this isn’t enough for these people like your just leaving them to their own thoughts instead of distractions .

Accepted Insurance

Aurora Behavioral Healthcare San Diego Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. Aurora San Diego provides outpatient care in the form of partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient programs (IOP) for those whose acute psychiatric symptoms require a safe and therapeutic environment. They also provide intensive outpatient programs for chemical dependency and dual diagnosis that specifically address the needs of individuals in recovery from substance abuse. Their team of outpatient specialists recognize and understand the needs of patients dealing with emotional and psychological disorders and chemical dependency who are looking to continue to titrate to lower levels of care. The goal of our programs is to help individuals develop their recovery and achieve success in their lives.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements. Aurora San Diego provides inpatient care and partial hospitalization for children ages 5-12 whose acute symptoms require a safe and therapeutic environment. They also provide inpatient care and partial hospitalization for acute mental health issues and chemical dependency intensive outpatient programs for adolescents ages 13 through 17 and adults. Their team of specialists recognize and understand the unique needs of child and adolescent patients dealing with emotional and psychological disorders and chemical dependency.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
military-program thumbnail image

Military Program

Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

The goal of couples therapy in California is to strengthen the couple's relationship. The therapist may take one or more approaches to counseling which may include the Gottman method, emotionally focused therapy, behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic couple's therapy.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Substances can prevent the absorption of nutrients and cause damage to your body's systems. Nutrition therapy in California addresses the deficiencies in vitamins and minerals that are caused by substance abuse.

This place is more of a detention center/daycare than a mental health rehabilitation center, i was admitted here 2 years ago at 16, every single staff member in there could give less of a care about their patients and were only there to get through their shift and get a paycheck . There were kids in there who had not felt the sun on their skin in MONTHS. They keep the kids locked up and just have people come in to talk about basic information like, don’t take drugs, but don’t actually have one on one confidential counseling to help these kids. I remember we were too scared to say how we really felt bc if we did we’d be afraid to be locked in there for weeks longer (which many WERE). There were kids younger than me in there telling me horrific details about their life, and had no idea that how bad those experiences were and ofc weren’t going to tell the staff. I too this day feel so bad for them and i hold those stories in my heart and pray they are in a better and safer situation. If I wasn’t so scared to be kept there longer i would’ve really talked to someone about how i felt and got the help i needed. They need to completely redo the facility and whatever ever system they have set up because it is TRASH. And any parent who sends their kid here is negligent and ignorant to all the other one star reviews left by people who experienced the same first hand. There were kids who literally made a plan to set the fire alarm off at night so they could ESCAPE my first night being here. It’s a house of HORRORS. I hope someone sues this place one day.

I was terrified when I found out Kaiser was sending me here considering I had read the reviews on the place prior. I went in expecting for the worst to happen but to my surprise it wasn’t all that bad. It’s a hospital for behavioral care, there’s going to be restrictions and while it sucks that’s unfortunately how things work. The nurses I had were incredibly nice, everyone I spoke to seemed caring and polite which was such a relief. The only thing I have a complain about is how boring the days can be and how there’s barely any clocks to track time.

Nurses are too concerned about getting their breaks covered rather than take the time to explain where we're supposed to go during a visit. Both nurses were rude. I know it's a stressful job but obviously it's not for you if your so concerned about your break rather than deal with a young teens parent. After signing in we just stood there waiting to be told what to do. Hope you enjoyed your break maybe find another job.

Its taken me 20 years to write this review.. I currently work in the Mental health and substance abuse treatment field, and until I found out there were actually good places, I thought all treatment was like aurora, disrespectful staff, groups that made no sense and a behavioral modification program that treats everyone the same ; throw em in the quiet room if you dont like what they say!. This place absolutely traumatized me, mind you it was my own doing being sent their and I take accountability for that. However I do not recommend any parent to EVER send your child here! Take the time to search around and speak to people first.

I would give them 5 stars. Even though my son left a bit upset after being there for a week, he told me he never wants to go back — and for me, that was a sign that something made him reflect. He said he’s willing to work on himself, continue his therapy, and seek help outside as well. He also shared that a teenage girl there had admitted herself seeking help, which moved me deeply. The only reason I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5 is that I wish there had been better communication with the psychiatrist and medical staff, especially on the day of his discharge. I had no idea he was being released until he called me himself to be picked up. That said, every time I called, the staff treated me with kindness and respect. I truly appreciate that. I know that mental health care is not easy, and I thank you all for the work you do. I genuinely hope you continue growing and improving with passion and heart for this mission. 🤍

Staff was rude when I got there. Made jokes about suicide and depression. They kept me isolated for days I begged them to be with me everyday and nobody cared. Made my parents pay for stuff they never agreed on. When I had mental breakdowns they kept me alone in my room. food was horrible. They lied about everything and kept me away from my family. Staff on the first day I got there three cards at me and made fun of how I cried and pointed at me. I seriously don't want anyone to go through what I been through in that place

i was there for a week August ‘24 — for some odd reason they decided to let the new kid who was at the time on drugs run loose and he ended up punching a kid in the face. he was sent to the “booty juice room” where someone else was also sent like three times? why are they isolated in a scary room with nothing but a sad mat on the floor with a camera facing them? thats not care, thats just inhumane. and what is with the point system? if you aren’t this certain rank you cant go down and pick what you want to eat? how is staying on a single floor never going outside helpful for anybody? i only went outside a SINGLE time during that whole visit and even then it was unbearable. i cant tell you a single person in there who actually felt like they were getting treatment they deserved. theres no mirrors anywhere, and no concept of time.
