Where do I start with this place I stayed here last March in the adult unit and still think about it a lot. I met people here who made it bearable, (I did have some lovely women in my room with me for which I was lucky to meet) however this hospital made me feel trapped and riddling with angst to leave during every second - but you must hide every bit of those emotions and lie when asked how you re feeling to appear healthy enough to go home, while your mental state deteriorates even more than before without notice. Maybe that s just how this system is set up but it s ineffective. You are strip searched upon arrival. You lose concept of time when there s only one clock at the end of the whole unit. Only two times did I see and get a chance to speak with the psychiatrist throughout the visit, one where she stood us all in a line and asked us all two basic questions - How are you feeling? and Is the medication working . Outside of that to asses progress you sit in a room on a zoom call with people. Kristin Hill, social worker, was the only true grace in the facility. Only one or two real beneficial group sessions the whole time because most of the time in there was a technician sitting down playing a question game with us or just on their clipboard. Outside of that watched movies, colored, and read my book got 30 minutes max outside per day at this courtyard area in the middle of the hospital (very trapped feeling again). Food was pretty good and I gained needed weight. They would lock the main bathroom and all the women s doors during the day but not the men s - I would have loved to been allowed a nap once as well as not feel like I m nagging the tech if I wanted to grab something. Being in your room and not regularly participating in any group will make you seem more mentally unstable/they will keep you there longer. I felt like if I wasn t on my A-game all day, every day I would be there forever so I exhausted myself being required to fake it and be present in the main room all day just to check some boxes. (The techs would sit down and check off attendance for each group all day, so hospital is a checks and boxes kind of system for you to be discharged.) Basically you only get out if you strictly follow the rules and schedule of activities for the day. This is supposed to be a place where you get better and heal, but that kind of system does/proves nothing. The room s bathroom had a half curtain in the place of a door. No privacy there. Shower was ice cold for me and there was a button to press every 30 seconds to start the water again (I presume a safety measure but nonetheless obnoxious). I was transported 5 hours from home to this place, so family couldn t come see me as the visits only allowed for like 20 minutes if I recall correctly. 15 minutes per day to call a member of your family which was the worst - just give us more time to hear their voices if some of us can t see them. Little toothbrushes that were hard to use, for feminine items you had to ask the tech every time you needed a product as they were only allowed to give one at a time (annoying simply because I already felt like I was bothering them enough with them being clearly understaffed and running around enough for everyone already), they were running out of shampoo, conditioner, soap, and lotion for us throughout my stay, had to use lotion for lip balm, etc. felt nasty and was glad to get home and cleanI think I was happier when I got out because I finally got to leave/felt free, not because my mental health improved like I had told them. To this day I have a fear of being treated in ANY medical setting because of how trapped I felt in this one.

Accepted Insurance

Brynn Marr Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Clients receiving treatment at an inpatient rehab facility are typically in early recovery or are at heightened risk of relapse. Clients in inpatient care remain at the facility for the duration of their program, enabling them to focus solely on their recovery. Inpatient treatment typically involves extensive psychotherapy, often including group and family counseling as well as one-on-one sessions. Recovery-focused life skills education is another common service. Many rehabs also offer evidence-based holistic therapies.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer a complete continuum of care for clients in the maintenance phase of recovery and are predicated on the idea that addiction disease is a chronic condition prone to relapse and warranting continuing care. Clients collaborate with their care team and case manager to access the specific rehab aftercare services they need to promote their sustained sobriety. Peer coaching, relapse prevention services, career counseling, and 12 step program induction are common in these programs.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
Individuals in early recovery often require 24-hour clinical care in North Carolina. This supervised care typically includes medications to treat specific withdrawal symptoms, which vary based on the substance abused. For example, staff may provide sleep aids to treat insomnia in patients who are addicted to marijuana. For those overcoming a cocaine use disorder, anti-depressants may be prescribed to manage mood swings. Other medications may also be provided to treat addiction-related health issues.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

equine-therapy iconEquine Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy helps you reclaim your life after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Therapists help to process these memories, which promotes emotional healing and reduces anxiety in social situations. This improves your overall well being and increases your self confidence.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

During nutrition therapy in North Carolina, you'll work with a nutritionist to develop a dietary plan. Medical professionals will provide input based on your health needs. You'll learn to create goals for nutrition and develop the skills you need to meet them.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Megan, the front desk receptionist, was amazing from the time I entered to bring my grandson in for an indirect admission until discharge. Staff members called daily with updates and to let you know your child is safe. They will call immediately if the is any issue with your loved one. My child does not want to go back but said it was a good learning experience. He said the staff was great all through his stay. Again, Megan was amazing!!!

If I could give them a zero i would. Do not let your child go to this hospital. My son has been there like 7 times against me saying no. He is currently there and I'm am fighting to get him out. This will be the absolute last time, I will do whatever I can to keep him out of there. I talked to him tonight and he is so high on his medicine he couldn't even talk to me. I have tried getting the doctor to call me today and nothing. I have once again left another message for a phone call and if I do not get called back tomorrow I will be calling state. This is not the first time I've had a problem with communication with them or problems with medications with him. Whatever you do, do not let your child go to brynn mar hospital. One of the times he went it took them 4 days to call me to verify meds so that was 4 days he wasn't on his medicine, and honestly thay should be one of the first things that you should be called about. These medications shouldn't be stopped and started again like that with even a day or days in-between. That can really mess with someone. It's not safe and I'm ready to just get my kid back home

I was a patient recently at Brynn Marr. The current rating is NOT representative of my experience. My experience was a 5 star experience. The staff, with only one exception, was phenomenal. Caring, compassionate, patient, knowledgeable, accommodating, I could go on and on. I want to highlight Jessica, Robert, Terry(sp?), Christina, Sarah, ABBY, Nicole, and so many others whose names I cannot recall at this moment. And Erica at the front, who made a very scary experience livable in that moment. The only complaint I have about my stay is the food. It isn't great, and they don't provide options for people with sensory sensitivities. Literally my only complaint for the bulk of my stay. I had one rough night due to a cranky staff member but once I said something I never saw that individual again. Mr. Craig, the manager is firm but approachable. This is a well run facility with a caring staff. Any complaints are probably made by those who are just not ready to accept or believe they need help. Or don't have patience for the time it takes for things to get processed. Do not hesitate to seek this place out if you need help. They will honestly do their best to help you, you just have to be ready.

I was sent here when I was 12, it was the most horrible thing id even dealt with. On the travel there I noticed there was blood on the seatbelts in the van they had us in. And it was incredibly hot, I had used the window to cool me down. There was also dried blood on the seat I was in, I had noticed it after I fell asleep. When we had made it to Brynn Marr, Me and a few other kids sat in a room, we had a nice conversation before they took one of us at a time to draw blood. They didn’t allow hoodies, and threatened to cut my hood off even though it was a comfort thing. Then me and my future roommate had gone to the children’s unit. All I can really say about this place is they pump you with meds. They almost overdosed me, I had spasms really bad, I couldn’t move my head forward without it turning involuntarily and painfully. I couldn’t control my facial expressions. When a nurse was talking to me I ended up going to the bathroom and desperately trying to make myself throw up. There were kids screaming and crying, punching and throwing things. There were some nice kids there, they were just as terrified as I was. NEVER send your kid here, and if they’re sent involuntarily, do EVERYTHING YOU CAN to get them out. I remember me and my roommate crying on the phone with my mom begging her to find a way to get us out. She was begging her mom too. We were holding eachother on the floor on our bathroom and just crying because we were scared. The next time my mom saw me she saw how “calm” I looked. It was them pumping me with meds. Please never bring your kid here.

As parents, we were not given a choice in which facility our 14-year-old son was sent to—and now we understand why. No one would voluntarily choose Brynn Marr Hospital. It is absolutely unsafe and more traumatic than helpful. We live over two hours away and work full time, yet we received no contact from the hospital for more than 48 hours after his admission. No one explained how to communicate with our child or speak with a provider. The facility was filthy, with roaches in both patient and waiting areas. Our son couldn’t shower for two days because he didn’t have clean clothes, and when he finally did, the conditions were so poor it felt more like punishment than care. Therapy was a joke—barely structured group sessions and rushed virtual provider check-ins lasting only a few minutes. Even discharge was delayed for unclear reasons, as if just to squeeze in another day of billing. This place doesn’t heal—it harms. Fight for your loved one not to end up here. They deserve real care, not more trauma.

From one parent to another: please explore other options for your child’s mental health care. During my child’s 28-day stay at Brynn Marr, she saw a therapist once—on the day of admission. That was confirmed to me directly by the therapist. While in their care, my child was involved in altercations that I was never informed about. She was also misdiagnosed and medicated based on that misdiagnosis. When my insurance provider requested documentation of her progress, Brynn Marr stopped communicating with them entirely. As a result, insurance cut off payment—and suddenly, within 24 hours, Brynn Marr decided she was “ready” to go home. Since discharge, I’ve made more than 15 attempts to get her medical records—leaving voicemails that are never returned. No one answers the phone. But sure enough, they managed to send me a $50,000 bill with zero breakdown or explanation of services. In my opinion, this facility is not only disorganized but deeply unethical. Please think twice before entrusting them with your child’s care.

My daughter was accepted here from an IVC local hospital referral. I read the reviews after she was accepted. I was HORRIFIED! we tried to request a different placement but that wasn’t an option. We (her father & I) hoped for the best while preparing for the worst. After she was transported to BrynnMarr, we took the two hour drive with so much anxiety and reluctance to meet her there for the admission process. We were greeted immediately by the front window lady & it was such a friendly positive greeting. We then sat down to wait for an admission nurse to come out to meet with us. During our wait, at least 4 staff members walked by and each one spoke with a friendly and comforting tone. Finally the nurse(Cindy I believe) came out & spent at least 45 minutes going over our questions and concerns in great detail. After the conversation was over, our fears were resolved. We had such high confidence in our daughter’s care. During her stay - we were contacted daily for an update. There were multiple times that we called in to speak with to our daughter but weren’t able to get through but it was the weekend so I assume maybe the facility wasn’t FULLY staffed like during the week days. During discharge everyone was discussed in great detail. Overall we had an excellent experience regardless of the reviews we saw and expected.
