I cannot recommend Cascade facility enough. My family and I have tried everything to get help for my child in TN. With shockingly low standards in care, most of which did more harm than good. Therapist that simply didn't process the experience, skill level, or self-control, to be effective. I was sick of being told about deep breathing, a chore chart and consequences would solve everything. Trust your instincts. As a parent, if those things worked, we would not be in this situation! Parents know when something isn't right. Staff at Cascade listened, validated what I said, I was free with ALL of my deepest fears, concerns and frustrations. Without fear of judgment. My child has grown, struggled, listened, contemplated life, set goals, made friendships. As she is getting ready to go home, reports her anxiety and depression as a ZERO with no cravings. When first arriving, her only goal was to get thrown out within a week. As she approached her 45-day mark, she said she really wanted to stay for 60 if she could. My child has been comfortable, safe and understood. The approach was to treat the entire family, staff communicate in real time, every email gets answered, every request for additional time for child or parent gets honored. Sandstone at Cascade has caring, professional staff. If you are exhausted, if you are tired of fighting for your child, if you live in a constant state of fear, and nobody is listening because your child presents well, if you can't keep your kid sober, there is help. Cascade Canyon was the only place that dug deep enough, to make a difference. To all out of State parents who are fearful to have your kid thousands of miles away, don't be. I promise you, it's worth it. Children were allowed to be children, they had their own space, they put pictures up and made their dorm like rooms their own. They were out on hikes, rock climbing, skydiving, they were not trapped, locked down, or dealing with kids that needed a higher, the kids were all dealing with the same type of issues. They were given the opportunity to have fun and see another side of life. If you are lucky enough to get a spot, don't second guess, getting your child quality care, even if they don't like you much at the time, is WORTH it. It gives both family and child a solid foundation to continue to build. Nothing is perfect, this is about as close to it as I have found.

My son survived a terrible car accident in which he was driving, very drunk. After realizing that he should have died in the accident he agreed he needed help. He admitted to using drugs and alcohol for many years. Sandstone saved my son, with personal therapy and family therapy and lots of support, he returned to me the son I always knew. Sober and a willingness to live life without the drugs and alcohol. Thank you Sandstone staff.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Professional services are often necessary to recover from addiction. Drug rehab in Colorado provides the expert services needed to address the complex issues of addiction and help individuals start their recovery journey.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) is a structured way of helping those with major mental illnesses and/or substance abuse by bringing services directly to the patient in home. Instead of hospitalization or an outpatient program, staff members like social workers, psychiatrists, and counselors come directly to the patient’s house for treatment. ACT is used primarily for those with severe and persistent mental illness like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, some of whom also contend with substance abuse. ACT can be short- or long-term (months to years), and provides the same multidisciplinary, 24/7 staffing of a psychiatric unit, but in the comfort of the patient's own home and/or community.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) is a modality based on strengthening moral reasoning, that can be used in substance abuse treatment. Originally created to help criminal offenders stop committing crimes, it is a structured approach that includes both group and individual counseling, as well as homework exercises. The MRT workbook is structured around 16 steps (units) focusing on 7 treatment issues, including building a healthy, positive identity; developing a higher frustration tolerance; and forming a strong moral belief structure. Participants meet 1-2 times weekly in groups, and can complete all steps of the MRT program in 3-6 months.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

horrible place, extremely traumatic and only inspired me to be sober so I never end up in a place like that again. Several staff there shouldn’t be working with kids. The way they treated me during crisis by therapist was not correct instead of feeling safe and comfortable I would be extremely judged and shamed upon for speaking. I was made fun of by a therapist because I could get over a very traumatic time in my life ( cough cough ) Ashley. as well as how I spoke about the concerns I had for others they would tell me to “mind my business “ but would blame me for not doing anything about someone running away as if it’s not there job to listen. Most of the day staff there shouldn’t be working with children since they act like them instead. Yes I’m talking about maggie and her little best friend that lied to there bosses about many things and when they checked the cameras they would apologize to us and get warnings from Pablo and Amanda yet they still work there and sure mistakes happen but almost everyday is not okay and even staff would gossip about us! How ironic right Tye? Talking bad behind children’s backs with other kids how childish. Now there is many many things that can be said about staff how several of them were extremely sexist “ girls can’t play in the basketball court because the boys already have it “ but they can have it whenever they want, and when we spoke about it nothing was done as well as how they spoke to kids with absolutely no regard of them being minors and many staff who spoke about politics as well as staff who had crazy point of views of sexual assault and what makes is sa that convo was the reason many people ran away in fear. I am in the current process of working with my lawyer over many things here and if there’s anyway to close this place. False advertisement is the definition of this place. The food is disgusting and never sanitary and a fellow peer kept receiving meet even tho she said she couldn’t eat it due to religious and yet nothing would change. The one star goes out for the night staff who deserve more respect. May god bless all who go to sandstone and please take your kid somewhere better!

This place needs to be shut down. They are negligent and rude with the patients. Extremely vague about the care of your children and wash their hands clean of any “wrong doings”. They room people together who have zero business sharing rooms. Save yourself the trouble and take your child elsewhere. These people are in it for the money.

Response from the owner
We’re very sorry to hear that your experience with Sandstone Care left you feeling this way. The care and safety of our clients is something we take extremely seriously, and it’s upsetting to know that you did not feel your concerns were addressed. We understand how important it is for families to feel informed and supported, especially during such a sensitive time. We would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you directly to better understand what happened and how we might learn from your experience. Please feel free to reach out to us by giving us a call directly. Wishing your family healing and peace moving forward.

I only gave one star because zero star ratings are not possible. This program was terrible and all they really care about is making money. They can't manage the number of kids they have, the program is coed (mixing boys+girls+addiction is a recipe for disaster) and I can't tell you how many parents I have met whose kids were "kicked out of Sandstone". After getting treatment at a good residential treatment facility in CA (Ascend Trails- highly recommend), I see how negligent and deficient the Sandstone program truly was. One of the patients got run over in the driveway by the psychiatrist. Our belongings went "missing" and were never returned. The educational coordinator there couldn't offer help with 10th grade algebra schoolwork. The IOP program afterwards was equally bad and a total waste of money. In total we spent almost $3,500 to attend the residential rehab and the IOP. What a racket. Please look elsewhere if you want good treatment for your teen's addiction issues.

We recently sent our son to Sandstone and it was probably the best decision we’ve ever made. The communication, the people and the support we have received has been phenomenal. I wholeheartedly recommend this program. I honestly believe it is life-changing for us and our child. It has given us hope again. My only advice is, try not to be paralyzed by indecision because you will not regret taking the step.

Response from the owner
Thank you for sharing your experience at our Colorado Teen Rehab! We’re so glad to hear that Sandstone has been a life-changing resource for your family and that you’ve felt supported throughout the process. Taking that first step can be difficult, and we appreciate you encouraging others to do the same. Wishing your son and your family continued healing and hope!

When we decided to send my son to Sandstone it was by far the hardest decision of my life. With that said, in our case it was the correct decision. It was a hard experience for both him and us, but he said the staff truly cared for the kids and their recovery. It showed upon his return and we got our son back. It’s been a year since he was sent to Sandstone. It hasn’t always been easy, we have had setbacks, but they have been rare. He is currently in a leadership role in his sobriety group and is doing well in school. He has also been part of several panels about teen substance abuse. I am very proud of where my son is currently, but this journey back started a year ago in Sandstone.

Response from the owner
Hey Ryan,

Thank you for taking the time to share your family’s journey and leave such a wonderful review of our Teen Rehab Center in Colorado! We understand how difficult that decision must have been, and we’re honored to have played a role in your son’s path to recovery. It’s inspiring to hear about his leadership and advocacy work, what an incredible transformation. Wishing your family continued growth and strength on this journey.🙂

I would not recommend sending your child here. I was here a few years back, and still talk to my old peers about how bad the experience was. Most of the staff was great, but our therapist would take her personal issues and anger out on us.

Response from the owner
Hey Morrelo,

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We deeply regret to hear about your negative experience and sincerely apologize if you felt the care provided fell short of our standards. While we're glad to know some staff left a positive impression, we take concerns about any staff behavior seriously. Your insights are invaluable as we continuously strive to improve our services. If you'd like to discuss your experience further, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we are committed to ensuring all clients receive the compassionate and professional care they deserve.
