About The Meadows

With more than 40 years of commitment to recovery in Centre Hall, Pennsylvania, The Meadows Psychiatric Center provides a safe and supportive environment for individuals looking to recover from both mental health and behavioral health challenges, including substance use disorders.

The Meadows Psychiatric Center is a comprehensive treatment facility that serves both adults and adolescents, offering personalized care that’s completely tailored to meet the unique needs of each person in their program. The facility itself is absolutely beautiful, with spacious rooms that were recently updated.

Comprehensive Care for Everyone

The Meadows Psychiatric Center offers a whole list of therapeutic services for adults facing mental health challenges and unhealthy coping mechanisms. The majority of the programs offered by this center help to identify the root cause of addiction and other behavioral challenges. Plus, they also offer a handful of services for teens who are looking to learn about healthy relationships and how to cope with stress in a healthy way.

One of the most unique services they offer to their inpatient teens is animal therapy and expressive arts therapy. These therapies work to help promote calm feelings and help the teen identify their emotions.

Some of the therapies that The Meadows Psychiatric Center incorporates for their adult clients include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) in their individual counseling sessions. On top of these offerings, they also provide clients with access to group therapy and education on stress management and coping skills.

An Integrated Approach to Behavioral Health

The Meadows Psychiatric Center combines compassionate care with innovative therapies. There’s not just one person who’s making all of the decisions in the medical care for patients here. Instead, there’s a whole team dedicated to providing individualized care at every turn.

To make the admissions process as easy as possible, The Meadows Psychiatric Center has highlighted all that a person can bring to their facility. This facility also offers some services available with telehealth, like psychiatric evaluations and individual therapy sessions.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

My experience

The staff was very nice and helpful; they did seem frustrated as they were understaffed. I also understand that at one point there were 2 separate adult sections which I believe would be beneficial to some patients who may not suffer from more of the behavioral issues. I jus ... Read More

Genuinely the worst place I've sent my daughter too. I wasn't able to speak to her due to a "wait time that was determined when I first called" which makes no sense at all. Not to mention the receptionist couldn't be any ruder. Now I can't even call my daughter who has a learning disability and has a slower development, so now I need to wait for her to call me. Why can't a mother just call her daughter to let her know that I love her. Not to mention my eldest daughter has been trying to call her as well, and shes all the way in college and had the same experience as myself. Genuinely no stars to this place don't send your children here if you never expect a chance to call them. Extremely rude and there are way better options... if I could give zero stars I would believe me..

This place is a joke. My daughter has been there for almost a week and I am just now hearing from the doctor who has been assigned to her and she is completely clueless. She has no idea the medications my daughter has even been prescribed since she had been admitted to their facility. Other info she had was inaccurate. When I voiced how concerning this was for me that she has no accurate information her response was”can I talk now” and than told me she wasn’t going to speak to me today because I was in a bad mood and hung up. Zero accountability. Then they refused to answer the phone. How have you had a minor child for a week in your facilities care, want to call and talk to the parent about updates to their care yet you don’t even have accurate info for the foundation of the conversation.

Clarion is better. Wpac is better. The Dr here is BAD BAD, and their not a safe environment. I had reported a staff because she told a su!cidal kid that she didn't care if he died and she was in it for the money Guess what they did? Celebrated her for her time spent on social media But whatever 🙄 They also fired one of the few good staff members there. I will say though that Dustin ( the art therapist) is a great dude, and I've shared really personal things (probably too much tbh) but he never made me feel like I was burdening him and he always gave me a chance even when I def didn't deserve him. So if you get nothing else, the art therapist is great!

when I was there, it was my first psych ward (still was) I miss the people there. Bc they were and still are considered my friends even tho we lost touch. It’s crazy to think how artificial everything is. but also how real the connections were. We were all kids. teenagers. But the small little community i was apart of in my unit helped me. It’s sad not everyone can get that. I really do miss my friends. I hope they got out like i did and are safe. Though it definitely isn’t all the same for everyone. It did help me. And sometimes taking a step, is all the help me need.

I am writing to express my concerns regarding my daughter's recent stay at The Meadows. I was disappointed to find that there was a lack of communication from the staff, with the exception of the receptionist, who would often direct my calls to voicemail without a return call. The only instances of communication I had were on the first day with the doctor to discuss medical history and when I requested a discharge date for my daughter. My daughter informed me that during her stay, she was bitten by what she believed to be a spider and was administered medication, but I was not notified of this incident. Furthermore, my daughter was admitted with an eating disorder and unfortunately lost nearly 9lbs during her stay due to inadequate meal provision. She reported living on a diet of carrots and uncrustable sandwiches, and despite informing staff of her apple allergy, she was given apples multiple times. Additionally, she described the facility as dirty with a bug problem, and her socks were completely black on the bottom upon her return home. She also mentioned mold in the showers, which made her feel even dirtier after showering. Unfortunately, she did not have any one-on-one sessions with a therapist, which was the primary purpose of her stay. Her case worker only met with her on the day of discharge. Overall, The Meadows has been a significant disappointment, and I believe it had a detrimental impact on my daughter's mental health. I would strongly advise against sending anyone to this facility.

For starters, when I showed up to do the intake process, the secretary was very rude and ignored me 3 times. I had questions about the paperwork and she never let me ask those questions so the paperwork was never finished. The next day, the doctor called me about a med change and asked if I had any concerns or questions. When I said I did and started voicing my concern, she interrupted me told me that it was a long time ago and told me she told my daughter "you don't need any friends, you need to stay away from the drama". I was never updated about any other med changes (and there was 2 med changes in the matter of 13 days) except the night before discharge when I got a call asking for consent to give melatonin. My daughter needed xrays and I was never informed of these xrays that was given and had to ask the caseworker what the results were and she didnt know anything about it. I wasnt happy with the lack of communication that takes place in the medical department. I understand giving consent to treat but also just a simple phone call would have been nice for an update. Also, she complained ALOT of how dirty and disgusting it was in the facility, her white socks were pure black looking like tar. She said no one sweeps or mops. She only got group therapy, really no individual therapy. She kept saying "this place is making me worse" and "this place made me so much more angry". In my opinion, there needs to be more individual therapy, hire more people if need be! I want to add since its been a few months, the "doctor" there is the worst!!! My daughter was never fully evaluated and was put on meds that we just found out she should have never been put on. She was mean when she came home and aggressive. We seen a REAL Pyschiatrist who did a full evaluation on her and he said "she was misdiagnosed and over medicated". I knew something was wrong the first week she came home from this place. And its been requested to have the discharge plan be sent to places I gave consent to and still the facilities have never received anything. If it wasnt for me having my own paperwork, it would be like she never went to this facility. How awful is that!!!!! Not only all this, my daughter is so much more traumatized because she was assaulted twice and staff did nothing plus how she was treated by some of the staff members. She wss there to get mental help not be treated like garbage and over-medicated. Do better people!! If you dont care about your patients than go get a factory job! The only good she got out of it was she made some friends who shes stayed friends with outside of the facility. I will NEVER EVER take my child back ever again!
