Alcohol was absolutely going to kill me, had I not found Blue Heron Recovery! From the first day, (although terrified not knowing what to expect) I felt very welcomed and safe. The facility is in a beautiful location surrounded by nature. I never felt a "hospital or jail" vibe. There is a brand new detox center and outpatient treatment available. They also incorporate yoga and meditation classes throughout the week. Heather and Lisa are AMAZING and truly care about each clients recovery. The staff work really hard to make the environment safe, fun, and healing. My therapist, Jim, is a super cool guy who treats everyone with respect which makes it easier to talk about difficult things. I owe much of my success to Jim! The owners Dr. Christina and Dr. Paul Mayer are some of the nicest people I've met and are frequently on-site teaching classes or engaging with clients. I have a long way to go, but my life as a whole is significantly better since completing the outpatient program at Blue Heron! I would highly recommend Blue Heron Recovery to anyone even considering getting help for addiction.

Accepted Insurance

Blue Heron Recovery works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

Treatments

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

I started my adventure into recovery, reaching out blindly for help, and didn't know where this all would go.. I can say today I am comfortable in my recovery and interested in helping others recover.. Lisa and Heather know how to welcome you into your personal journey. it's not a general pace, but at your pace. Counselors are different in treatment based on experience. This can honestly be beneficial to clients, but overwhelming for some counselors .. First day is like you walked into a library or Granny Heron's as the furniture seems acquired and expensive.. The whole environment is there to be relaxed and inviting, bringing you into your recovery without judgment. This isn't the commercial institution you were scared of. it's the support you need.

Response from the owner
Hi Henry,
We’re so grateful to have been part of your recovery journey and honored to have provided the support you needed along the way. While the furniture may be a bit on the fancy side, we truly believe that everyone in recovery deserves a safe, welcoming, and high-quality environment. As all our clients are so valuable themselves.

Heather and Lisa are both incredible members of our team, and we’re thrilled to hear they made you feel welcomed and supported from the start. Thank you for your kind words — they mean so much to all of us.

Please know that you, like all of our clients, will always hold a special place in our hearts. It’s people like you who inspire us to keep growing and giving our very best every day.

I Came to Blue Herron right after a 30 day detox/PHP. Initially I came for IOP but soon realized that PHP is what I needed. The staff was warm and welcoming and quickly made me feel like family! The curriculum and activities became part of my daily regimen. And that’s what I needed a schedule to keep me busy. My counselor Jim was amazing and easy to talk with about my journey through sobriety and my personal life. I would recommend Blue Herron to anyone! 5 Stars!

Response from the owner

At Blue Heron Recovery, we believe that individualized care and structure play a vital role in long-term sobriety—and we're glad our PHP and IOP programs in San Antonio provided the support and routine you needed during this stage of your recovery.

Our team works hard to create a welcoming, family-like environment where clients feel seen, heard, and supported from day one. It's great to hear that the curriculum and daily activities helped you build positive habits and stay engaged, and we’re especially glad to hear that Jim was a meaningful part of your experience.

Thank you for recommending Blue Heron Recovery to others. We’re proud to offer high-quality drug and alcohol rehab programs that meet clients where they are and walk with them every step of the way. Wishing you continued strength and success in your sobriety.
