ARFID, or avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, is an eating disorder characterized by the voluntary limiting of food intake that is not related to distorted body image concerns, but instead to anxieties about food itself.
In 2013, ARFID diagnosis criteria was added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5), a clinician’s handbook published by the American Psychological Association that provides standardized classifications of mental health conditions.
While there is at this time limited research on the prevalence of ARFID, a 2022 study in The Journal of Eating Disorders reported that between 0.5% and 5% of children and adults in the United States have this disorder. Though ARFID most often first appears during childhood, it can develop at any age. Childhood ARFID sometimes persists into adulthood.
People with ARFID restrict their food intake because of anxiety surrounding the consumption of certain foods. They may have fears of choking or vomiting, or they may strongly dislike foods that have a certain taste, color, texture, or smell. A traumatic experience, such as force-feeding or a prior instance of choking, may lead to ARFID.

Some underlying neurological conditions, including autism, have been linked to the disorder. A person may be predisposed to ARFID if there is a history of eating disorders in their family.
Unlike the eating disorder anorexia nervosa, persons with ARFID don’t experience a distorted body-image or a desire to lose weight through severe calorie restriction.
Although ARFID is sometimes called “selective eating disorder,” it is not the same as being a picky eater. Picky eaters are usually young children who resist only a few, selected foods items, and being a picky eater doesn’t affect the child’s appetite or growth. Picky eating during childhood tends to go away on its own as the child grows into adolescence.
But ARFID can persist into adulthood and sometimes may not go away without treatment.
ARFID can have dangerous complications if a person is unable to consume sufficient nutrients to maintain their health. Treatment for ARFID often involves cognitive behavioral therapy. Sometimes gastroenterology treatment to address GI discomfort or medication to reduce anxiety and fears about food intake are used as well.

FAQs
While children usually grow out of picky eating, sometimes ARFID lasts into adulthood. Adults with ARFID are more likely to require medical intervention or hospitalization for the condition. ARFID in adults can cause nutritional deficiencies and gastrointestinal issues as well as psychosocial issues.
In adults, ARFID symptoms are often related to avoidance behaviors affiliated with sensory characteristics such as the taste, color, texture, or smell of foods. Sometimes, even the appearance or temperature of food is off-putting to an adult who has avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder.
Weight loss in adult ARFID patients is not related to body image distortion, as is the case in patients with anorexia or bulimia.
ARFID in children is more than the typical “picky eating” behaviors that many children exhibit. ARFID puts children at risk of nutritional deficiencies and physical, mental, and behavioral health problems associated with the disorder.
Signs of avoidant restrictive food intake disorder in children may include:
- Fears or resistance to new or unfamiliar foods
- Fears or negative reactions to certain smells, textures, tastes, or colors of food
- Overall lack of interest in food and often being “not hungry”
- Fears of adverse consequences of eating, such as choking or vomiting
- Food avoidance behaviors such as complaining of stomach pain, having a temper tantrum, or refusing to eat
Restricted eating in children can result in failure to reach normal weight goals for the child’s age or meet nutritional needs. It can also affect social development and possibly delay puberty.
According to the National Eating Disorders Association, a diagnosis of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder is made when restricted food intake leads to excessive weight loss with possible nutritional deficiencies, when food supplements or tube feeding are required, or when restricted food intake interferes with social and interpersonal relationships.
Food limitation associated with the following do not meet the criteria for ARFID diagnosis:
- Limited food intake due to food insecurity, religious fasting, or the presence of an additional medical condition
- Limited food intake due to a distorted body image or a desire to minimize body size and shape
- Limited food intake that results from a medical condition that does not exceed expected amounts of weight loss or cause a major complication to the overall health of the patient
A diagnosis of ARFID often involves a physical exam and blood or urine tests to determine a patient’s general health, possible nutritional deficiencies, and possible organ dysfunction.
ARFID includes some similarities to autism spectrum disorder. A 2023 study
reported in Current Opinion in Psychiatry found “a considerable overlap between ARFID and autism,” with 8% to 55% of children diagnosed with ARFID also having characteristics of autistic spectrum disorder.
Impact and Complications of ARFID
The consequences of ARFID can be severe. Consistently eating a highly selective, restrictive diet that avoids multiple foods or categories of food, such as fruits, vegetables, or meats, may result in deficiencies of key nutrients and lead to negative physical outcomes.
ARFID can also affect a person’s socialization opportunities. People with ARFID may avoid family dinners or avoid participating in other activities that involve food. Relationships, as well as work or school responsibilities, may suffer.
Serious complications arising from ARFID may include:
- Malnutrition
- Dehydration
- Electrolyte imbalances
- Anemia
- Low blood pressure
- Lowered bone density
- Irregular heartbeat
- Delayed puberty
- Reduced physical growth

This place is god sent. I have been in several trauma centers in Florida and they are the only ones that seem to get it! Great snacks, fashionable donations (including shoes), and even better Techs. Ive been clean since the holidays due to their new beginnings of sobriety excitement and impressive alumni support system +Nikki. Thanks, Boca 😀.Beach Beauty1 month agoBoca is an amazing place. The staff is absolutely amazing. I was fortunate enough to be able to work with Misty and Sondra. From day 1 until the day I left was a complete 180. Bracebridge Hall saved my life & marriage. The staff there is AMAZING. Dan, Nikki, Chris, Al & all the others & the RSS staff. Good food and lots of it lol. The fellow patients were awesome as well. Such a positive experience. BEST investment I EVER made. 10 stars I actually miss the place thank you allTim silveria2 months agoI attended RCA for 34 days at Bracebridge Hall. It was the most awesome place for a rehab. I learnt about myself and my addiction. I attended rehab there November 15th – December 17th. The staff in it’s entirety, from counselling to doctors, counseling to dietary. There was not one thing they didn’t cover in my treatment. The place was the most beautiful place and the treatment was the best treatment out of anyone I have heard. From all the ladies and guys in nursing through the ladies and guys in the kitchen. I will never forget that place or what I learned there. I will always appreciate them for all they did for me. As well, my insurance did not cover my stay. I went through their program on scholarship. I could not thank them enough for what they did for me!!!Timothy Holtschneider4 months agoMy experience at RCA bracebridge Hall is one that absolutely saved my life. It started with a nursing staff. My counselor was absolutely amazing and her name was Tammy. I honestly believe that she wasn’t my counselor, I would not be where I am today. I have to mention Chris grape, Lauren and Tom. Without these people my journey would have probably ended short..Beth was my case manager, she was absolutely the best at what she does.Mary who did Mat class is phenomenal. She was my inspiration in the area .she is amazing, she never missed an appointment, which is crazy knowing her workload.Elijah…WOW! I HAVE NO CLUE HOW SHE DOES WHAT SHE DOES.absolutely amazing. She is so calm, and always had/has the right answers at the right time that I need them. I am currently at sober living and the house manager, which name is Evan, deserves a Nobel Peace prize…no really. He has the patience of a god. I don’t know how he stays so calm in the situations that he’s put through. Even on vacation he still made sure the house was being ran up to par. If I missed anybody I’m so sorry everyone I dealt with it RCA was amazing I don’t have anything bad to say about anyone. Nothing but love for RCA and I would recommend this place to anyone who has addiction issues or mental health issues.all love. Oh and Miss Holly is absolutely amazing also she is the best for the kitchen staff. Laura at PHP has a way about her that only she can get away with and she is all love to everyone. She cares so much about her job and is very passionate. If I can think of anything else I’ll be back.lol.Also wanted to give a shout out to Sam,and Lindsay whom which are part of the nursing staff. They both went above and beyond anything I could have imagined.they genuinely care for every client that walk through RCA.I will continue to add to this post as I have more time to reflect.Tim Smith5 months ago5521300 Victory Blvd Suite 540 Woodland Hills, California 91367Here at Profound, we use an evidence-based treatment model to address addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions. I just left Profound and I couldn’t wait to leave, but when it was time, I wanted to stay. I created a new family that I could communicate without being judged. Maybe not everything pertained to me, but I did get a lot of tools and coping mechanisms for my addiction. I was fortunate to be in the new Oxnard house and it was a resort. Everyone was great there, so many people to name, but let’s do it! Doug, Katie, Camille, Rob, Jessie, David, Dalton, Kyle, Mike, Michelle, Lindsey, Chloe, Tez, Rodney, Sheryl, Irma, overnight Mike and most of all our amazing Chef Kayla! I will miss all of you and especially all of my house mates! I’m proud I stuck it out and received my 30 day coin! Love you all and thank you🙏Jason Moore2 weeks agoA Love Letter to the Place That Saved My Life There are no words big enough, no thank-yous deep enough, to fully express what this place has given me. Walking through the doors of this rehab, I was not just broken—I was gone. A shell. An echo of the person I used to be. I didn’t come in with hope; I came in with desperation. I had burned bridges, lost myself, and forgotten what it meant to truly live. But this place… this place gave me everything back—and more. From day one, the staff treated me not as a case or a number, but as a soul worth saving. They didn’t judge my past. They held space for my pain, gently guiding me out of the shadows I’d been lost in for so long. They reminded me that I wasn’t just addicted—I was hurting, I was human, and I was still worthy of love. The counselors weren’t just professionals—they were warriors, walking with us every step, sometimes carrying us when we couldn’t carry ourselves. They challenged us. Believed in us. Cried with us. Laughed with us. Celebrated every tiny victory like it was the Super Bowl. Because in recovery, those victories are everything. I learned how to feel again. How to breathe. How to forgive myself. I learned that recovery isn’t just about saying no to a substance—it’s about saying yes to life. Yes to family. Yes to morning sunlight and belly laughs and long talks and second chances. I got my smile back here. I got my future back. I will never forget the people I met here—the late-night talks in the common room, the moments of raw, unscripted honesty, the way complete strangers became family. We cheered each other on. We picked each other up. We healed together. That kind of bond doesn’t fade. Today, I am sober. I am strong. I am healing. But most importantly—I am here. And I owe that to this sacred place that saw light in me when I could only see darkness. If you are wondering if this is the place for you, let me say this from the deepest part of my heart: it is. Let this be the start of your miracle, like it was mine. Thank you, from the bottom of my soul. You didn’t just save my life—you gave me a reason to live it. Forever grateful,Cynthia Madison2 weeks ago🌟 A Love Letter to the Place That Helped Me Begin Again 🌟 I don’t know if words will ever fully express what this place means to me — but I’ll try. When I walked through those doors, I was exhausted. Not just tired — spiritually winded. I was carrying the weight of choices, shame, fear, and the echo of my own voice asking, “Will I ever be whole again?” And then something happened. A team of the most compassionate, professional, beautifully human beings I’ve ever met welcomed me — not like a patient, but like a person. Like someone worth fighting for. From the nurses to the counselors, the kitchen staff to the therapists, the front desk to the housekeeping — each one of them carried light into my darkest moments. They didn’t judge. They didn’t push. They walked with me — step by step — back into myself. Every group, every one-on-one, every conversation over coffee, every morning reflection… it rebuilt me. They didn’t just treat addiction here — they treated the person beneath it. They reminded me I was still in there, still breathing, still capable of joy, laughter, strength, and purpose. And yes, I laughed. I cried. I healed. I grew. If you’re reading this and you’re afraid — please come. If you think it won’t work for you — come anyway. If you believe you’re too broken — you’re not. I promise. I thought that too. And now, by the grace of this place and the hearts that run it, I have hope again. To the staff: I will never forget you. You saved my life — not just my body, but my soul. I carry your voices with me, your strength, your faith in me even when I didn’t have it myself. You gave me more than sobriety. You gave me myself back. Thank you. I m so grateful to my 30 days I spent at RCA Devon to get my life back together. This was my first time in treatment and I was scared to say the least. The therapists, group facilitators and RSS s realized how frightening of a time this was and took the time out of their days to make sure I was comfortable. The floor community we had was the most uplifting group of people I ve ever been a part of by far and I m still close with several people I d consider dear friends now. The care from RCA didn t just end when the 30 days passed , the made sure to outline aftercare for me and set everything up , not to mention working directly with my employer to handle FMLA so I wouldn t have that to worry about as well. If you re ready and willing to get help for yourself but are unsure of an extended in person rehab stay I couldn t recommend more giving it a try. I ve only been back out in the real world for a month and my life is immensely more enjoyable. I would give Maple Mountain health and wellness 10+ stars if I could! Going there was the best thing I have ever done for myself in my whole life. I highly recommend this facility for anyone dealing with trauma. The modalities of therapy offered were life-changing. I learned many new life skills, and have tools to bring home as I continue my healing and recovery journey. I felt like I was in a safe, beautiful home with the most loving, caring, and kind staff you could ever ask for. The best part is that I made lifelong friends that I will cherish forever. The entire program is incredibly well structured, the staff and therapists are very knowledgeable and kudos to the chefs, as the food was not only nutritious, but phenomenal! Aside from the educational groups that range from group processing, yoga Nidra, sound bath, nutrition and wellness, equine and music therapy (my personal favorites) DBT, CBT, and stress management were incredibly valuable, and I learned so much from these programs. Jen was the first person I spoke with, and I knew in our conversation that this was the right place for me. I was warmly welcomed right from the beginning, and knew this journey would be healing and memorable. We also were able to have a lot of fun with the experiential activities they carefully planned for us. Special kudos to Vikki and Kevin, who went out of their way to give me the care and tools for me to maintain my recovery. I am forever grateful to every single person at Maple Mountain recovery. I researched the entire country for two weeks to find this place, and it was worth that time because they deserve every rave review they get! Super highly recommended and feel free to reach out if you have any questions! Thank you so much to everyone at MMR! I will never forget you and love you all💜Allison Van Cott McEntee3 weeks agoI came to MMR very very scared, I was in a constant out-of-body experience my first few days. The staff and even the clients were super supportive and calm around me. Everyone continued this encouraging, positive attitude and were very sensitive to my needs while I was here. The encouragement to attend group activities was important for me to come out of my shell. I’d say about two weeks in was when I really felt a part of the house, and began to see improvement in myself. To the staff at MMR ya’ll are angels in disguise here on earth. You are doing the father’s work, showing all us broken people love and hope. I appreciate my experience and am going home with tools I didn’t have before. Where do I start . I m beyond grateful for beach house!! I came crawling into the doors on October 18th 2024 and I have successfully completed the program with a total of 125 days !!! Beach house literally saved my life. I did the detox and residential part and decided I wasn t ready for the real world so I went to the PHP & IOP program. And let me tell you . LIFE CHANGING!!!! I want to first thank Anthony, he is amazing! Always know how to keep the community together and happy! Also Mrs.Loni , mrs.Kim Bri and Rickey are great. but most importantly I want to give my upmost gratitude to Danielle my case manager and ANDROMADA!!!! My amazing therapist!! They showed me so much support the entire 3 months of PHP / IOP that I can t be grateful enough. Andromada is one of the BEST therapist I ve EVER came across. I came to her broken, with unresolved trauma and all my problems I ve been carrying on my back & she molded me and put me back together like a puzzle!!! and I can t even describe the treatment she s given me. And danielle handled my case perfectly!! Making everything smoothly for me. And always giving me the best resources. I want to PACK THEM ALL IN MY BAGS AND TAKE THEM WITH ME!!!! Absolutely amazing first and last rehab experience!!! They are the reason I will continue to be sober!!! Thank you beach house! From your best alumni MIQUENYA!Mikki Brockett3 months agoThe facility was incredible, everyone was kind, friendly and compassionate. Food was good. Bianca and jared talked me off the ledge a few times and i am very grateful.Miguel C3 months agoI don t know where to begin, from the moment I exited the vehicle at Beach House, I was met with compassion. The intake staff was nothing less than professional. It takes a certain type of professional ability to make a person 1800 miles away from home comfortable. I d like to add, I struggled with my addiction for over thirty years, I was ready to change my life for the better. I committed myself to keeping my mouth shut and ears open, let s face it, I was unable to do for myself, what beach house could. In residential, I was able to attend great informational classes , led by professional personnel which taught me about my addiction. Not only was this opportunity given to me, I was also able to attend an AA meeting every night, as well as met with a therapist once a week to discuss where I was at in my recovery. Let me speak about the incredible breakfast, lunch and dinners that were provided, it made me feel as if I was at an all you can eat buffet, absolutely amazing. I took advantage of the beautiful sunrises on the beach every morning where I could start my day in a positive way. I also took advantage of all the extra activities that were put together for us on a daily basis. Just to name a few, movie night, bingo night, karaoke night, arts night and much more. I found it very easy to approach ANY of the beach house staff with any questions, concerns or suggestions. I also enjoyed the weekly chiropractor and massage appointments. As it came closer to my exit date, I made a mature, ethical choice. I showed interest in continuing my education of addiction and sobriety , and requested to be moved into the PHP program. PHP was another example of the care and compassion given by all staff and the opportunity to begin to adapt to a sober life style, and responsibility of myself. The staff at PHP are hands down very professional, and much like residential, the staff at PHP provide cook outs, karaoke , time to fish, watch movies , quiet areas to read and study the big book or just take in the fresh air and practice meditation. They provide transportation to and from a fantastic AA meeting Sunday through Wednesday, with speakers who come to the campus Thursday through Saturday. They also provide transportation to and from the beach in the morning along with transportation to Walmart, grocery store, church, and a additional AA meeting on Sunday. PHP gave me the opportunity to reconnect with my everyday tasks. This being , making my bed in the morning, keeping my room and apartment clean, and cooking dinner for myself. I also enjoyed doing my part in the group room. This is just alittle of what PHP has to offer. I found it refreshing that adult responsibility was included in this program. As for education, once again, the education of my addiction only continued to grow. From working with my therapist on a weekly basis, to the professionals teaching classes each day, not to mention the staff constantly planning extra activities such as going to the park for a session, going to the beach for a cookout , beach time and much more. By the time my PHP program was completed, I was able to notice a significant change in my life. As I stated in the beginning of this, I committed to working the programs Beach House provides for me. I chose to continue working on myself and entered IOP. With IOP, much stayed the same, however, IOP, provides the opportunity to leave the premises everyday, obtain a job, and much more. I can honestly say, It was with a heavy heart that this experience had to come to and end, however, To the entire staff that makes Beach House what it is, from the evening i arrived at intake, through to the completion of IOP, there aren t enough words, or gratitude I can say or show for saving my life. You all gave me the tools, showed me I am worth it, and I am loved. I am forever in your debt, and you ALL will remain in my heart. For those looking for piece, love and a life free of addiction, I highly recommend Beach House. It s life changing.James Reed4 months ago6227 Sheldon Road Tampa FL, 33615Turning Point of Tampa is an addiction treatment and mental health treatment center in Tampa, Florida. I was hopeless, broken, and exhausted from years of substance abuse and all of the shame and self-hatred that comes along with it.The clinical team at Turning Point addressed my disease head on, all while offering compassion and understanding. I had many underlying issues perpetuating my chronic relapse cycle that I had never addressed until I made it to Turning Point. I am so grateful to Turning Point for helping me confront my addiction, rebuild trust with my loved ones, and continued support even after treatment. I couldn t be more impressed with this treatment center! My sister graduated their program, and today is her 4 year sober anniversary. I ve seen such a positive change in her since then. I was reminded today of the huge hand they had in helping her. The staff at the rehab care for her and she s still in contact with many of them til this day. When we visited ourselves the rehab itself was clean and comfortable. Can t thank them enough because they helped my family member turn their life around, and I am forever grateful. This facility has played an integral role in my son s recovery. The staff went above and beyond throughout his care. My son s therapist, Leah, was the most integral part of his treatment. She was able to see what previous therapists have missed. The facility itself is beautiful and offers great therapies. I highly recommend this location if you are on the fence about trusting a facility with your child.Jessica De La Garza4 months agoMy child ended up getting involuntarily discharged and I’m still giving Evolve a 5 star rating because they were fantastic throughout the 30 day stay.Admissions helped us through the entire process over a weekend when my child was kicked out elsewhere.Facility was great.Staff from Management to therapists were all kind and very caring. Where Paradigm (Malibu) felt much more corporate, Evolve treated my daughter with so much compassioin, even through the discharge process. The therapist were even crying at discharge, and more telling, my child really wanted to go back after the episode passed.Medical staff tried much harder than elsewhere to find the secret sauce to help my kiddo.Good news, we did eventually find a med (at home) that helped a TON and we’re mostly under control now. I’m sure Evolve made a big difference in this process. If you are a parent with a troubled teen, hang in there! Feels impossible some days, but I highly recommend the Evolve team.Thank you Clara, Leah, Anna,, Allexis & Dellyna!Ed Lyon8 months agoThis place single-handedly changed my life. I was in evolve in 2018 after attempting to end my life. i was suffering with BPD and had horrible body image issues, an eating disorder, self worth problems, and was extremely self destructive. The 6 weeks i spent here changed my entire life. from the amazing staff who genuinely wanted to listen, to the cook who made sure we knew food was a good thing and not something to be afraid of, to knowing my therapist genuinely engaged the best for me was something i d never had in my life. growing up in the south where people are very closed minded really affected my mental health. for the first time ever i felt listened to. i felt seen. and i didn t feel guilty for who i was. i have had many downfalls and failures since leaving evolve, but i never gave up. this place changed my whole mindset. i went from a suicidal teen who didn t think she d live past 18 to a successful young woman who is engaged with a baby on the way in my own home before the age of 20. evolve made me want to live. and i ll never be able to say enough good things about this place. ever.demon days2 years ago1947 South 2800 East New Harmony, UT 84757Situated amidst the stunning landscapes of Southern Utah, just two miles from the entrance to Zion National Park, Zion Recovery provides an exceptional 18-bed residential inpatient treatment center designed to support individuals in overcoming substance abuse and mental health challenges. Finding ARFID Treatment Today
Treatments for ARFID may include psychoeducation about nutrition and food safety, exposure therapy (gradually introducing new foods), anxiety management, and reward-based contingency interventions (giving praise or small rewards for bites of food eaten).
Currently there are no medications approved by the FDA for the condition, but medications that address anxiety symptoms are often used in ARFID treatment. Medications to increase appetite are also sometimes used.
Psychological treatment may include:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on the beliefs, values, and thinking processes that maintain ARFID behaviors.
Family Therapy
Family therapy supports patients and helps them overcome lack of interest in food and eating, and fears of negative consequences. For instance, family members can emphasize the social interaction and bonding aspects of mealtime and reassure patients that others will be able to intervene if the patient experiences choking.
Sources for Professional Treatment
If you need professional treatment, you have a wide range of options, including:
Inpatient behavioral health treatment may be required if serious medical complications such as cardiac or gastrointestinal issues are present. Inpatient treatment offers 24/7 supervision with both medical and psychological clinicians providing care in a supportive, safe environment.
Outpatient behavioral health treatment provides treatment in daytime hours without overnight stays. Programs include partial hospitalization, or day programs, typically providing 4-8 hours of treatment per day over 5 days a week.
Treatment involves individual and group therapy, skills training, and medication management if needed. Intensive outpatient programs typically provide 9-20 hours per week of similar treatment. Regular outpatient programs may meet once or twice a week and offer individual, group, or family counseling and educational workshops.
Telehealth behavioral health treatment is available using online video conferencing or telephone sessions for people who cannot or prefer not to attend a program in person. You can find behavioral treatment programs near you by asking for a referral from your primary doctor, a nutritionist, or your insurance provider.
No matter which program you choose, access help as soon as possible to avoid serious consequences. Early intervention is important for achieving the best outcomes for ARFID treatment.
