About Georgia Southern University – Center for Addiction

The Georgia Southern University Counseling Center is located on Cedarwood Drive in Statesboro, Georgia. This center offers behavioral health counseling services primarily for their students who have co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.

They are located on the campus of Georgia Southern University, close to restaurants, student facilities, and local businesses. They’re also close to the East Georgia Regional Medical Center and Route 301. Local natural landmarks can also be accessed including Luetta Moore Park, Statesboro Bulloch County and Forest Heights Country Club.

Free Counseling for GSU Students

Services offered to students include individual, one-on-one counseling and group therapy sessions. Therapy is available at flexible times to accommodate students’ educational and work-related needs. In addition, they offer you crisis intervention services, if you are experiencing a mental health or SUD crisis situation and are in need of immediate care to address and/or treat those conditions.

I love that services are offered at no cost to students who are currently enrolled at Georgia Southern University. Services are provided to licensed and professionally trained mental health care providers. Care can also be accessed both in-person and through telehealth care.

Free Workshop and Drop-In Groups

I think it’s great that they also offer you free workshops and drop-in groups, regardless of being a client at the Counseling Center. They offer flexible locations for meetings including online, in-person, on campus and through a hybrid setting. Workshops include confidence building programs, de-stress programs and self-care clinics.

Outreach and Workshop Requests Available

The staff is there for outreach and workshop requests. They provide presentations and offer staff member participation at student events to help in spreading the word on de-stigmatizing mental health and other co-occurring disorders.

They're only getting one star because I cannot go lower. If terrible service is swimming, then this counseling center is Michael Phelps. Do not be deceived by their smiles and friendly demeanor, it is all a facade. The counselors here care about one thing and one thing only: making their jobs easier. They will quickly dump you off to another counselor if it makes their workload easier. They will quickly try and cut your appointments short under the guise of "oh you're doing so well, guess we don't have to do anything today," They will quickly lie and and trick you into involuntary commitment even if that is not the best thing for you. And when called on their actions cry crocodile tears and try to sweep the broken trust under the rug. If you want your mental health to get better, you are infinitely better off seeking off campus resources. If you are in an emergency, you are better off calling an emergency help number because the counseling center may not even pick up your call, or they will put you on hold, or your call will be mysteriously dropped.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Clinical Services

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Changed counselors multiple times, I am dealing with an anxiety disorder and having to constantly be switched around made me more anxious about going than it did help, having to meet 3 different counselors in the span of a year. All of my counselors would give me the same responses every time I went, it was more like talking to a wall than a person. They would agree with everything I said and always seemed to be eager to end the appointments. Counselors seemed to be unaware of what to do and I made no progress overall and would say that my experience here has made me feel more like a burden. I would not recommend this place,

The person who did my counseling was professional and kind. The counseling was very helpful and I learned a lot and was able to make a lot of progress. Had an over-all good experience. My only complaints are: 1. The office needs more counselors. There are too few for the amount of students and those who desperately need frequent visits are unable to get them due to few openings. 2. There should be a way to schedule an appointment without calling. Having to call to schedule an appointment is a huge obstacle for people who struggle with anxiety and other such conditions.

These councilors mix up appointment dates with their patients and do not provide very much help. When confronted with the issue don’t do not want to fix it. Worst councilors I’ve ever been to.

Fantastic job! These people are great at what they do. If your on the fence about seeking help for any reason I recommend you give them a try.

Had hands down the worst counseling experience of my life here. I wouldn't recommend this place to any college student unless they want their problems to be worse or judged. Was being told either I did what they wanted or they were ending my services, saying I had to do something that I was extremely uncomfortable with and when I said I didn't feel comfortable with it I was told then they would not continue my services. Horrible.

Always very helpful. Doctors are friendly and definitely know their stuff. The biggest complaint I have is the length of time to see someone, which can often be up to a month. We just got a therapy dog though! ❤
