Kouts, IN | If your children have mental or behavioral problems, then Midwest Center for Youth and Families may be what they need to get back on their feet. It’s a residential center in Kouts, Indiana. They help girls ages 10-18 and boys from 12-18. If your income isn’t that high, they do accept Indiana Medicaid. When your kids are admitted, they’ll get | Treatments Programs Payment Options | As a parent currently navigating the incredibly difficult and emotional experience of having a child in inpatient behavioral treatment, I wanted to share a more balanced perspective regarding Midwest. Like many parents, I read the reviews before my son arrived and was absolutely terrified. While no facility is perfect, and this type of environment is extremely intense and constantly evolving, our experience so far has included several staff members whose passion, compassion, and dedication deserve recognition.
Jasmine has been absolutely incredible. Her ability to balance the emotional needs of the patients while also managing staff and unit dynamics is something I genuinely admire. She listens, communicates honestly, remains calm under pressure, and approaches these kids with both accountability and compassion.
Angie has such a calming and compassionate presence. You can genuinely feel that she cares deeply about the kids and the work she is doing. Cece has years of experience and taps into her mothering nature to provide a stable environment, often at the cost of the patients giving her flack for her consistency. She is a kind soul who has clearly dedicated herself to this type of work.
Mama D has shown so much affection, concern, and dedication toward these boys. In an environment where many of these kids are struggling emotionally and behaviorally, that warmth matters more than people realize. Jamar has also stood out to me because of the stability and consistency he brings to the unit. At the same time, he still seems to understand that these are teenagers who occasionally need moments of laughter, flexibility, and normalcy within appropriate boundaries.
Communication has been open throughout this process, although not always perfectly consistent, which honestly should be expected in a setting where staff are constantly navigating changing emotional, behavioral, and safety situations involving multiple adolescents at once.
As a parent, this has been one of the hardest experiences of my life. But I also recognize how emotionally demanding this work is for the people caring for these kids every day. I simply wanted to acknowledge the staff members who have made a meaningful difference for our family during an incredibly difficult time.
I will update this review once we have completed treatment there, but going on week four, I am very thankful that we ended up choosing Midwest. My son is always clean, has not complained about the facilities or the food, and he is a very picky eater. Yes, some of these reviews probably have some basis, especially those written by former patients. These kids are navigating very difficult emotions and issues in a world that I often find difficult to navigate even as an adult. There is no doubt in my mind that each of these kids is going to have a different experience and perspective while there and post-treatment. It is very much a situation where outcomes depend partly on whether the child is emotionally able and willing to engage in the work of treatment. Many are navigating medication changes, new diagnoses, changing home environments, and hormones all at the same time. It is a lot.
I also wanted to add that our son brought up an issue with a staff member to us, and at first we took it with a grain of salt. After additional conversations, we began to believe there was merit to some of his concerns regarding this staff member. Jasmine handled this situation maturely and appropriately while balancing all sides of it. While I could understand my son's perspective, I have also grown to have deep care and concern for our mental health workers. This staff member is likely in need of a break from the unit she has been on for a lengthy amount of time, and this was addressed immediately before it spiraled into something bigger.
So, if you're where we were a month ago, I get it. Take some deep, deep breaths, and make a call to Midwest and talk through your concerns. I think you will find that they are a very transparent behavioral health center that is constantly striving to improve.

Stayed here for about 2 months in 2024. I seriously was in the worst and unhealthiest phase of my life to date, as 2024 felt like a fever dream looking back on it. I would say I loved to meet more people who had issues like me and the staff was mostly awesome and there are a couple people I would love to give shout outs to. However, I would like to say that despite how much I loved the pros of this place, it doesn’t negate the negatives. There were a lot of traumatic instances where I had to watch people have meltdowns and SH. To be honest, though, I don’t remember a lot of it. I do still have my journal though.
Taylor was my therapist. She was exceptional. I loved that I felt comfortable talking to her. She was so nice and I really hope she is doing well now. I hope all of the people I met there are, as well.
Sydney was fantastic. I feel like I really did get on her nerves a lot but I definitely felt happy that she kept her patience with me. I hope she’s doing good too.
I miss chef Jerry 🥲
Teacher Wendy was awesome. I honestly kind of miss her.
As much as I hated feeling trapped there, I can definitely say I felt I had people in my corner when things would go awry.
I am seriously so thankful for the experience I had there, regardless of the negatives, because I did learn a lot about the consequences of my actions and how to have a more positive perspective in life. As terrible as it sounds, it was a stark reality check. I got a real good look into the person I was becoming, and it changed me so much.
Wherever the people are that i met there are now, i hope they have found a way to move past the things they have been dealt, including the staff. Nobody deserves to have to be in the dark place they are when they enter those doors. I feel like most people who take these job routes are people who have been in our shoes, and it’s inspired me to do more for other people and step back and think about the consequences my actions have on other people. So if you remember me, know I am grateful for each and every one of you I had the privilege of meeting and sharing experiences with at MCYF. Regardless of whether we had a strained relationship or if we were practically best friends, I will never stop wishing the best for you and your situations.

It’s been over a year from me staying here, this was my only trip to a ward that actually helped the staff or well at south shore I can’t talk for kouts big location. I’ve been almost always clean from Self harm since then, I will say relapses have happened but I’ve learned to cope after them and stop myself after one. People think when in recovery you won’t ever relapse it does happen you just gotta learn how to take care of it. I hated it here not because it didn’t help it was just so different, I’m from Kentucky so going all the way to Indiana was so different. I was apart of a really good group of kids though, of course there was days it was chaotic and loud. But we all have problems and sometimes it’s overwhelming. We didn’t have a single hold while I was there! It was a very safe space, there was one nurse I can’t remember her name, but she was very abusive of her power. If she was the main nurse on shift / if Brendon wasn’t there if any of us cried we were childish / not using coping skills effectively. Yelled constantly even if you just asked to use the bathroom, she made me feel like crap. She really shouldn’t work in that line of work, I was talking to my mom on the phone about her yelling at me for asking to go talk to the nurse about taking my anxiety medication (PRN) and she hung the phone up and sent me to my room for the rest of the night. And I ended up crying for a while and when everyone went to sleep I had my head stuffed in a pillow and she still came in there and yelled at me saying I was keeping everyone down the hall up with my crying like a baby. I finally fell asleep in the morning I asked the others in the ward and they were all like “you were crying?” She had made it up. However on another point, Brendon !! / brendonavisa 👑 he helped so much I felt as though he really understood and listened. He was very strict on rules but he kinda had to be. He helped me though so much trauma flash backs. I’d have them at night a lot while trying to sleep and he’d sit in the hall with me and fill out I think it was called the flash back flower? It would let you write it down instead of talking about it and it would be given to your theapst

Kouts, IN | Midwest Center for Youth and Families in Valparaiso is a residential facility that provides mental health and substance disorder treatment for adolescents. The evidence based therapies that are used at this facility include dialectical behavioral therapy and recreational therapy. Recovery Support For Military Dependents One program that stands out | Treatments Programs Payment Options | I went here when i was 13. I am 24 now. I met some great people who had their issues but deep down they helped me grow into who i am now, they taught me very good skills that i still use today like DEARMAN. They let us get school work done and have fun in gym class. They were wonderful with issues and adressed them appropriately. I am so happy to finally leave a good review after all these years. This wasnt the place i wanted to be when i was 13 cutting myself being suicidal, but they helped me grow into who i am today, i was only there for a month because of insurance reasons. But they had great ling term care. My only complaint is that they could upgrade the food and milk, the milk tended to be spoiled most days back then, but it may be completely different now, i wish the staff and everyone who knew me the best of luck

This program is extremely adaptable, it is up to the residents to help create the environment they need to grow in.
I was at SSA for nearly four months, and there I (as well as my family) have learned absolutely the most therapeutically there compared to anywhere else. Any other 1:1 therapist, any other group therapy, inpatient, IOP, rehab, anything. This program fully immerses you inside of a place of DBT and support. There are 100% difficult times here, as there are anywhere, and at the same time, there are constantly tools provided to assist with these times.
You hear horror stories of residentials locking adolescents in their rooms, starving them, refusing to engage or provide helpful tools to them, restraining unnecessarily, using them to clean/as tools etc- but this is NOT one of those places.
This place is SAFE. This means the necessities. AND THEN THEY HAVE MORE.
Like I said, this program is very adaptable. Every group of adolescents that comes in has a say in the adjustment of the growing experience here. This ranges from just voicing your opinion in general, to leveling up and becoming a member of what they call resident council. Resident council makes changes to how the floor is run with the staff and helps teach the skills.
This was something I commonly did. I made changes on the unit for my group, I lead informational groups and games all the time.
There are resident lead groups, BHW groups, therapy groups, nursing groups, pet and equine therapy- and more.
Here you are allowed to have fun, to engage and live and progress, but this means working the program. You can't hide things here, fake your way through, stay blunted. You will not have a good experience here if you can't work the program. And that will be part of it for a lot of people, having to go here to learn HOW TO open themselves up and be part of the program. It does take time to regulate to it, but being willing is important. At some point.
A lot of these other reviews are pulling the negatives from the positives. This is likely the safest place in a several state radius for any adolescent. There are caring staff here, someone your child WILL click with and find as their safe person, and it will be okay for them. It has been extremely helpful and educational for me, and my family.
Brendon, the shift coordinator for the South Shore unit, is extremely well educated and skillful. He's been working in mental health for 10+ years. He is trained very thoroughly in DBT- and more areas of therapy. Everyone that comes here will always remember him, there's no doubt about that. He leaves an educational mark on just about anyone. He will consistently lead BHW groups, teaching residents and even staff about useful DBT skills, takes residents to equine therapy, he leads the resident council activities, and more.
I frequently call back onto the unit floor and talk to him, as well as other staff members. They are consistently there for old and new residents.
Cloe Carda, a therapist here, is THE MOST wise, well-spoken, helpful, skillful, and caring person I have met. She has been solely the most supportive person there to me and many others. She is always willing to take on every situation she is faced with, and she is more than prepared to do so. I've never been more impressed with any mental health professional. I actually miss her each day, and I'm more than thankful I met her and the Midwest team.

Let me just say I was a patient at Medmark for years and above everything no matter what because they open at 4:45 AM says it all. You won’t. Working men and women this your clinic. Just no weed. Sorry.

I do not typically do these reviews however I felt very strongly I needed to. I have been in the program for over 7 years. The program honestly saved my life after trying several other things. My addiction became like most had back problems and my doctors were very free to prescribe the opioids and benzodiazepines. Xanax was actually the worst for me hospitalized for over 10 days due to all the seizures. Anyways the nurses Yolanda Jackie Val are sweethearts and have never judged me once. Yolanda is the one person who always tells me she is proud of me I don’t even hear that from family. Kim who runs front desk is also great. In my experience I have had around 6 counselors and sorry to say this is the downfall here. I don’t know if they are overworked micromanaged or just don’t care but I have had to go elsewhere for my counseling. I have promise for my new counselor April who is new to this location. Since starting she has been on top on my case not letting anything slide. She gets accomplished what the 5 others took months to do and I appreciate that. Non judgmental follow-up and just caring she accomplishes where most can’t and this is what keeps me clean and alive and I thank her for that more than I can say. Doctor is a different story for a different day I will just say to the women ask that a third person be in the room. That’s all!

After completing inpatient rehabilitation, I transitioned into the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Parkdale Center and I can say with my whole heart that it was one of the most life-changing and soul-healing experiences I’ve ever had. Parkdale didn’t just help me continue my recovery, they helped me to continue to find myself again. They believed in me, held space for my pain, and gave me the tools and encouragement to continue to rise stronger than I ever thought possible.
From the leadership to the support staff, everyone at Parkdale exudes compassion, professionalism, and a deep commitment to healing. But what makes Parkdale truly exceptional are people like Rigo and Claudia. They treated me not like a number or a case, but like family. There was zero judgment, only humility, kindness, and an unwavering belief in my potential. Rigo felt like a steady big brother, firm when needed, but always full of heart. Claudia radiates warmth and made me feel safe, seen, and cared for in a way that felt almost sacred. These two, and so many others at Parkdale (like Dr. Chris, Denise, Ty, David) restored my faith in people and reminded me that recovery is possible when you’re surrounded by those who genuinely care.
Parkdale is the best at what they do because they combine clinical excellence with human connection. Their program isn’t just about sobriety, it’s about rebuilding your life with dignity, strength, and purpose. If someone I love ever needed help, Parkdale is the place I would trust.

We took my daughter for a risk assessment and I was pleasantly surprised by our experience (based off reputation and previous experience). Mario checked us in, was very welcoming and gentle, explained the process and really took the time my daughter deserved for someone to hear her. He explained things in an age appropriate way, gave strategies or idea of support, and walked us through what to expect. He asked my daughter questions that dug deeper in what she meant and didn't take her answer for surface value which I appreciated. He did not lead her, but asked her to explain and when she didn't understand, he explained in a different way. He was genuinely happy to be there, didn't miserable which made us comfortable to open up more. I cannot speak for anyone else, but Mario really did a great job!

I have been coming to semoran new seasons treatment center for over 6 years and never in any of those 6 years have I ever have my HIPAA violated or have been treated like the staff is better than me, until today. Diane, someone who is supposed to be a 'trusted' counselor, is someone who instead is a power hungry and unsympathetic human. As I'm being called to the window she tried to block me from going to dose and also made some ignorant comments, then went on to tell my counselor to CONTROL HER PATIENTS! Basically because I didn't let her bully me like she does every one else...oh and Diane didn't like that. Even after knowing what a disgusting person she really is after hearing how she talks to and about people, as I am sitting outside where the group was going on (literally before this had even happened) but after I saw how she acted towards me in a hallway full of people, oh and tried to deny my dose. Like what a miserable human. She obviously doesn't like when people stick up for themselves. She was just dragging addicts in that group and it was nauseating. Even after all this happened in the hallway and patients from that group are saying how this counselor acts like she is better than the patients. I sure don't want anyone or anything like that around me and my sobriety! Being in that type of position and treating people in recovery like that is disgusting and you should be ashamed of yourself, Diane. Literally the ONLY negative thing I have to say about Semoran.
Like I said i have been in the program since August 2019 and I have had a very positive experience with everyone else. Regina is so kind and supportive but also very no nonsense. Michelle, the nurse practitioner has a heart of gold and the best sense of humor, she will always have a smile on her face. Dawn is my counselor and she's amazing, she has worked very hard with me and I have came so far in my recovery. I can always depend on her to be honest with me. Steve, you aren't my counselor but you have helped me through a lot too and i am very grateful for you. This program was the best thing that has ever happened to me. You have to be ready to commit yourself to sobriety and really be done for it to truly work for you. And there are some wonderful counselors to help you. Bruce, Makeba, Vic, just to name a few. Even negative things you can try to take away and make something positive from it. This may have started off as sounding like a negative review, but you can't let one rotten apple ruin the bunch. 🙏🏻

My girlfriend and I battle opiate addiction and have went to the victory clinic in south bend (where we're from)to try getting off the opiates but left there more frustrated and discouraged than before. Now we go to Swanson and it's amazing. We are understood, heard, and not judged. People there believe in us and are willing to do anything to see us succeed
So far we love it.

I went to the swanson center afraid I was going to get a doctor who wasn't going to listen to me, just prescribe pills, and send me on my way. BUT no, that is not what I got. I got a nice lady named Gloria, who , like me, is a dog lover and encouraged me to bring my dog in next appointment. I am excited to go back with my dog, not only because I can bring my dog with me, but because I liked her energy and responsive care to my woes and sorrows. Made me feel comfortable and at ease.

This review is specifically for Sarah in the obgyn department on the 3rd floor of the building. SHE IS PHENOMENAL! I met her as Dr. Stephanos Rizos(who was an amazing obgyn but retired) nurse but now that he is retired she is still apart of the nursing staff there and she just a all around wonderful nurse who listens, is accommodating and gets back to you in a timely manner. I hated seeing dr rizos go but she helps with the void. I can't say enough great things about her she truly is an amazing nurse through and through.

Our experience with Vena Treatment Center in Valparaiso has been overwhelmingly positive. The level of professionalism, care, and consistency across the team is exceptional.
Kate, Racheal, Simon, and Jeremy are outstanding. They are attentive, thoughtful, and truly invested in the people they work with. The environment they create feels supportive, structured, and respectful. You can tell this is a team that communicates well and genuinely cares about outcomes.
What stands out most is the collaborative approach. Communication is clear and timely, and families are treated with respect and inclusion. That level of transparency and partnership makes a significant difference.
The work being done here is not easy, and it’s clear the team takes that responsibility seriously. We are grateful for the guidance, support, and steady presence they provide.
