Accepted Insurance

UNC Health Johnston works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Clients who are exiting detox or stepping down from intensive inpatient care typically transition directly into outpatient treatment. Outpatient programs are designed to allow clients to either re-enter or remain in their communities while receiving robust, personalized care. Many facilities offer evening, night, or weekend services to accommodate clients' home and work schedules. The most common outpatient treatment modalities include psychotherapy, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).

inpatient iconInpatient

Clients receiving treatment at an inpatient rehab facility are typically in early recovery or are at heightened risk of relapse. Clients in inpatient care remain at the facility for the duration of their program, enabling them to focus solely on their recovery. Inpatient treatment typically involves extensive psychotherapy, often including group and family counseling as well as one-on-one sessions. Recovery-focused life skills education is another common service. Many rehabs also offer evidence-based holistic therapies.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

Intervention services can provide customized interventions tailored to the needs of the individual and family. An intervention specialist can design and conduct a drug intervention in North Carolina that encourages the individual to enter treatment in a non-coercive manner. The specialist will meet with the family to plan the intervention, then provide expert insights to guide the process and appropriate follow-up care.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

Individuals in early recovery often require 24-hour clinical care in North Carolina. This supervised care typically includes medications to treat specific withdrawal symptoms, which vary based on the substance abused. For example, staff may provide sleep aids to treat insomnia in patients who are addicted to marijuana. For those overcoming a cocaine use disorder, anti-depressants may be prescribed to manage mood swings. Other medications may also be provided to treat addiction-related health issues.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

A medically assisted detox is the safest way to remove addictive drugs and alcohol from your body. A team of licensed medical professionals will look after you 24/7 to monitor your health, help minimize discomfort, and provide medications if necessary to alleviate any withdrawal symptoms. This process is typically the first step in your recovery and may take around 5-7 days, although length will depend on your individual needs.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy helps you reclaim your life after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Therapists help to process these memories, which promotes emotional healing and reduces anxiety in social situations. This improves your overall well being and increases your self confidence.

During nutrition therapy in North Carolina, you'll work with a nutritionist to develop a dietary plan. Medical professionals will provide input based on your health needs. You'll learn to create goals for nutrition and develop the skills you need to meet them.

While the majority of staff are caring and want what's best for their patients beware of case management. My latest experience resulted in being told multiple different things and being flat out lied too by 1 case manager in particular. Her highest priority was getting an obviously sick elderly patient discharged by the end of week while spouting nonsense about setting things up to help us which turned out to be completely fabricated. In the future smithfield will be my last choice for my loved one.

Response from the owner

Absolutely disgusting the way the staff here does not care about their patients. Went in because i had severe abdominal pain, was vomiting, my hands and feet were tingling/going numb, and kept going in and out of consciousness the ENTIRE time I was there. Waited an hour or so to finally get to triage, was still shaking and vomiting, and the lady taking my notes (older, white, blonde/white curly hair) looks at me and tells me my throwing up is loud and asks if i can quiet it down. Go back into the waiting room, 4 hours have gone and I still haven’t been seen. Everyone before and after me had been seen and/or discharged. I try to be understanding that our healthcare system is in shambles right now but our healthcare staff having no sympathy and quite literally judging me for the whole reason I even went there was very disappointing. I was polite and trying my best until they decided to be rude

if i could give this place 0 stars i would. completely unprofessional and a staff full of 0 sympathy. took my best friend in for severe abdominal pain and vomiting, on top of this she is in and out of conciseness in the waiting room. we waited over and hour to get back to triage and when we finally did the nurse (older white lady curly blonde/ white hair) proceeded to ask my friend if she could “throw up more quietly” on top of being stared at by everyone in the waiting room for having a medical emergency now the nurses are making her feel like a problem. do not come here unless you want to be treated like actual trash. the security guards are the most kind and helpful people in here.

1,095 days since HEALTHCARE costed you your life. 638 days between the point we became aware that an investigation would be taking place and the point the investigation actually began. 129 days since being notified claims WERE substantiated from the investigation…..and we continue to wait to receive the report to get a glimpse into what unfolded in the last 5 days of your life. I’ve read that discernment is knowing the difference between Peter and Judas. Peter had a bad day and Judas had a bad heart. “Peter had a bad day.” He denied Jesus three times out of fear and weakness— not malice. He was remorseful and later became a key leader in the early Chruch. His failure was temporary and born from human frailty. “Judas had a bad heart.” Judas betrayed Jesus for money and then couldn’t live with the guilt. His action was premeditated, rooted in deeper selfishness or disillusionment. He didn’t seek reconciliation— he gave up. “This is why you reconcile with Peter and release Judas.” You reconcile with people who make mistakes but have good hearts. You release people whose actions come from deeper toxicity or betrayal. Forgiveness can be offered in both cases but relationships and trust should be reserved fo those like Peter. The silence that continues to cause suffering is the true testament of those who were responsible. The recorded lies over the course of the last 3 years were deliberate. The difference……today my voice will begin to be heard. My Father’s story will begin to be told. I am coming with videos and recorded conversations. They can delay another 1,095 days if thats what they see fit. For every day there is air in my lungs I will remind those involved, who my Daddy was. I don’t care if it is the last thing I do…..I will die fighting for what is right and what they did to him.

I had numerous trips to the E.R. over the course of last year. I was diagnosed with AFIB and until I had my ablation I ended up in there a lot. I wanted to take the time to say that the staff tried their best each and every time to help me get my heart back on track in a timely manner. They genuinely seemed to care and did the best they could even when they were swamped with patients. Trips to the ER are never fun and having to wait a long time can sometimes be frustrating but I wanted to take a moment to show some appreciation to the Nurses and Doctors. Thank you for taking the time to help.

Response from the owner
Hi Randy, thank you for your kind words. We look forward to sharing this positive feedback with our team.

Do not go here unless you want issues with getting your procedure approved! My insurance approved, but it goes to hospital insurance reviewers as well. I had two procedures have to be rescheduled because if this. And when they call you to tell you they don’t have insurance approval they don’t tell you it’s their board! I spent hours trying to find out was wrong and finally did on the second one. I ended up going to another hospital and things were approved quickly and smoothly . I will never go back there again!

Response from the owner
Hi Brenda, we apologize if you or anyone else had a less-than-ideal experience with us. If you are willing, please contact our Insurance Verification staff at 919-938-6603 to speak with a hospital representative directly about your issue. Thank you.
