About Windmoor Healthcare

Windmoor Healthcare is a dual diagnosis addiction treatment center in Clearwater, Florida. Their services include inpatient, outpatient, intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs revolving around therapy. They also offer detox for those in immediate need. They accept a number of insurance plans including Medicaid and they offer charity care to those who have less income. They are accredited and have the Joint Commission seal of National Quality Approval.

This center is a behavioral health clinic that offers crisis care, electroconvulsive therapy and treatment for military personnel and veterans, amongst many other treatment modalities. They treat a variety of conditions, such as depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD and substance use disorder. Patients receiving care can stay on-site or work in a number of programs like partial hospitalization or outpatient treatment.

Depending on patients’ needs, they may have to begin treatment with medically supervised detox. The staff will make sure that patients are safe and comfortable while any toxic substances make their way out of their bodies. Once that’s done, patients can begin therapeutic treatment.

This center offers several pathways for therapy and recovery including individual and group therapy, motivational interviewing, art therapy and pet therapy. They even have support groups that regularly visit the site and offer their services.

As this center’s dual diagnosis clinic, patients will have a recovery process that centers around their mental health. Certain issues like depression and anxiety often worsen and act as catalysts to addictive behaviors and those can be treated alongside substance use disorder.

The community seems to love this center as former patients say extremely kind things about the staff, facility and treatment. Patients in the military especially seem to benefit from care at this center. Overall it seems that this is an excellent choice for those in need of addiction treatment or mental health care.

First things first, I was with the military/veterans wing during my time at Windmoor, so I cannot speak on the civilian side of things. That said, coming here was exactly what I needed to kick my life back into gear. The treatment I received here helped immensely, and not only were the staff amazing for the most part, I also made lifelong friends in some of my fellow patients. It was life changing to say the least, and the 28-day program they offer for military members is fantastic, but you have to work for your progress. This isn t something you can just sit through and come out better, you have to be 100% open and honest with yourself, but also those around you. I would not be where I am today without the friends I made here.

As a female veteran undergoing countless challenges..I can honestly say this was the BEST thing I have ever done for myself. The staff is outstanding. The help I personally received will impact me forever. If I ever had a friend in crisis (or before.. just wanting HELP) I would refer them to Windmoor. Especially the Military program. God bless the social worker at St Anthony's, that strongly suggested I come here. It IS a path to a better tomorrow!

To me the Windmoor facility was a godsend, especially in the military units, specifically in unit 11, the care and concern they showed us was second to none. The staff there was phenomenal as were the nurses and techs , my stay there was very helpful for me , and I am not the only one thinking that way, I have been in touch with some of the others that were housed there with me and we all agreed that they were very good and helpful. This was my first experience with this kind of facility, I was impressed and grateful for everyone involved !Paul Middlemiss .Ps , thank you all .

Accepted Insurance

Windmoor Healthcare works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) involve frequent and robust therapeutic sessions for clients requiring high-level care. Clients may engage in a combination of medication assisted treatment (MAT), addiction counseling, recovery skills training, and holistic therapies for a minimum of nine and a maximum of 20 hours per week. Intensive outpatient rehab is designed primarily for persons in early recovery, those exiting detox or inpatient care, and those at an elevated relapse risk.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs are a collection of highly individualized services designed to promote long-term recovery. These services evolve as your needs change. Case managers and recovery teams typically begin formulating the rehab aftercare service plan early in the recovery process to facilitate your reintegration back into the home, workplace, and community.
12-step icon12-Step
12 step programs support recovery through emotional, psychological, and spiritual development to address the root causes of addiction. These programs are peer directed, with participants regularly attending 12 step meetings, which are anonymous, free, and accessible day and night, year-round. Recovery is based on "working the steps" to understand the source of addiction, take accountability for one's life choices, and relinquish control for that which cannot be changed. Age-specific, gender-separate, and other specialized programs are widely available.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
If a person with a substance use disorder continually denies their problem or refuses to get treatment, a drug intervention in Florida may be necessary. Intervention services can help mediate the intervention by providing an addiction expert. This professional can de-escalate situations and facilitate a healthier discussion between the individual and their loved ones. Specialists can also help families handle issues they don't know how to navigate on their own.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Often referred to as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers an intensive treatment option that allows individuals to return home at night. PHP treatment typically requires a minimum of 20 hours a week for an average of 90 days. Participants attend daily therapeutic sessions, receive medication management, and have access to skilled medical professionals. While costs can vary, most insurance will fully or partially cover a partial hospitalization program.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
24-hour clinical care in Florida is an essential part of treatment, particularly with medical detox. Withdrawal symptoms can be severe, and supervised detox provides around the clock access to medical professionals who can adminsiter proper medications and treatment to address these symptoms and step in should an emergency occur. This intensive clinical care will help curb the withdrawal effects, minimize substance dependence, and prepare you for the next step of treatment.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

UPDATE: I am updating my review as a reply to the facility's attempt to deceive all who read my initial review. I was admitted into their facility with all of my current contact information. If in fact, they wished to address my claims, they could easily do so. This place is dangerously negligent. I had a serious medical issue that arose, I asked for help. I was told they could not send me to the hospital because a hospital will not help me and will send me back. I was threatened that if I continued to cry out for help, I would be sent to a unit where I would not be permitted to leave for a longer period. I have been seeking medical hep now as a result of my approximately 48 hours in that horrible place. I have been advised to pursue a complaint. I dare not name anyone out of respect for her coming to me, my last morning, an employee privately advised me to file a grievance. I'm very serious when i say, do NOT go here. ********************************************* I would provide a negative 5 star if it were possible. They lie to get you in, they steal your things. The doctor prescribed me inappropriate medication and when I became violently ill they threatened to put me on a crisis unit and force me to stay. I had voluntarily signed myself in. When I attempted to voluntarily sign myself out, I was told that I could not leave. I had to wait on absolute agony for 24 hours. They offer a jail like setting and actually charge your insurance for the privilege of being locked down in the sixth circle of hell. You aren't permitted to sleep or rest. That place officially provided medically induced PTSD. Do not go there.

My mother brought me to this facility after a quick Google search (we are not from this area full time) after severe chest pains (panic/anxiety), destroying my home and screaming from agitation. I voluntarily walked in seeking help. I have a chronic illness that causes anxiety, depression and mood swings. I checked ALL the boxes except "homicidal" and was interviewed and they learned of my disease, pressures as a caregiver to my terminally ill mother (who tried to help me) and I didn't "qualify for their program" because I was "already doing all the right things (yoga, exercise ,etc)." They sent an unstable person home to a terminally ill/elderly adult that was raging and destroying objects. They were kind enough to call a Lyft to get me home so my mother did not have to return to get me. I'm not sure what qualifies as unstable enough to get help, but I guess I should have checked homicidal. Probably a blessing as the facility waiting room had a large bag of food containers from someone's lunch sitting in the floor where you check in to step over and when providing a urine sample, I encountered the filthiest bathroom worse that a gas station! There was visible stuff all over toilet seat, wads of used toilet paper all over the floor and another patients urine sample on the sink with wads of toilet paper around it making it impossible to wash my hands without touching or moving it. I told nurses and check in staff and no one seemed shocked or concerned. I read great reviews by others so I may have come on an off day or I just wasn't using substances and/or military.

This place was awesome! The best staff and support you could ask for. Definitely recommend just diving into the program when you get here. You only get out what you put in. I walked out of it feeling stronger and with more self confidence. Big shout out to Caleb and the nursing staff. They really know what they’re doing. So greatful for the experience and the food wasn’t too bad either!

During my time at Windmoor, I had a very positive experience with the nurses, techs, and the physician—they were all compassionate, professional, and genuinely supportive. However, I had a significantly negative experience with Dr. Castleman, the director of the military unit. Her approach lacks empathy, and her interactions often feel dismissive and condescending, as if she views patients more like students in a classroom rather than individuals seeking care. Unfortunately, many service members have shared similar concerns, yet nothing seems to change. Since she oversees the very system meant for patient feedback, it feels like our voices are being silenced. It's also disheartening to witness the way she treats staff, which likely contributes to a tense and uncomfortable environment. Windmoor has the potential to be an excellent facility, especially with the amazing team currently in place. But in my opinion, removing Dr. Castleman from a therapeutic role—or replacing her altogether—would significantly improve the experience for future patients.

I am very grateful stay at windmoor, from the moment I arrived the remarkable staff went to work making me feel welcome,I was very disoriented and angry when arrived not knowing what to expect, even while having a tantrum the staff was very patient with me. After arriving on the crisis unit the nurse on duty took time to sit and talk with me (Christina) and assure things would work out, after discovering I was a veteran she immediately went to work trying to get me to the veterans unit,Caleb the military liaison came with an hour to talk with me and a few hours later I was moved to the military unit and again the remarkable nursing made me feel welcome to the veterans unit, the doctors were very knowledgeable and took as much time as I needed to talk with them . The Cafe windmoor is top shelf, very professional staff, during my stay I gained 15 pounds, the veterans counselor Ms. Carolyn is top knotch, the treatment is intense and effective,I highly recommend windmoor to active duty and veterans in search of remarkable care.

Windmoor Healthcare offers a unique program tailored to Active Duty military personnel and Veterans. It is a 28 day commitment and addresses a range of issues, including PTSD, depression, substance use, and complex trauma. They offer individual therapy, group therapy, and recreational therapy. There are also NA and AA meetings that you can attend while in the program. Unlike VA hospitals they allow smoke breaks and provide community cigarettes for those that cannot afford them. The food provided by the nutrition department is tasty and you can eat twice during each meal session. For those who like to PT they bring in professional trainers to keep you in shape and they also have a gym for AM or PM workouts. In short, I highly recommend it due to its compassionate care, specialized treatments, and support for individuals dealing with mental health/substance use challenges.

WINDMOOR HEALTHCARE VETERAN'S UNIT ABSOLUTELY SAVED MY LIFE!!! I spent 28 days inpatient in the Veterans Unit. I arrived after years of abusing alcohol followed by a binge of drinking vodka that almost poisoned me to death. The medical staff was caring and nursed me through my Detox period and then on to a stable state of mind. The entire staff were true professionals in all aspects of their care for me. I was treated with dignity and respect throughout my treatment. There were so many instances where I was treated with sincere and personal care that I'll always remember. Through counseling and therapy sessions I was able to get to the root problem causing me to medicate with alcohol. I was medicating with alcohol to the point I nearly overdosed on vodka. I WOULD RECOMMEND WINDMOOR VETERAN'S UNIT TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE. IF I HAD A LOVED ONE OR A DEAR FRIEND WITH A SUBSTANCE ABUSE PROBLEM, I'D FLY THEM ACROSS THE COUNTRY TO GO TO WINDMOOR HEALTHCARE FOR TREATMENT. PS. The food in the cafeteria is awesome 99.9% of the time. Everyone has an off day after all. Coach Ron Helfrich
