Update: since posting, I was able to have the latest billing issue resolved. I really appreciate that kind of customer service. It remains to be seen if they can overhaul their billing department so that the people working there regularly communicate with competence and compassion.Despite the good medical care I received from my nurses and midwives after delivering my baby, I cannot recommend this hospital due to the absolute incompetence of their finance and billing team. I have spent many hours on the phone with the hospital billing team who are often extremely rude to boot and my insurance company and debt collectors they have sent me to erroneously, just trying to resolve incorrect bills and payments that have been incorrectly resolved. I have actually had to three way call with them and insurance on multiple occasions because of their byzantine systems. I hope they can resolve such a woeful lack of humanity and incompetence on the part of their billing team. In the meantime, I will be pursuing the care of myself and my family elsewhere.

During one of the most difficult times our family has faced, the care we received at Evanston Hospital was nothing short of extraordinary. Dr. Chris in the ICU, along with every single nurse and staff member we encountered, went above and beyond offering not just medical expertise but genuine compassion, clarity and patience at every turn. This review isn t meant to sway anyone s hospital decisions (and I sincerely hope no one is choosing based solely on reviews), but I felt compelled to publicly acknowledge the incredible people working here. The ICU team and the entire 4th floor staff are doing deeply important, often underappreciated work and it truly meant the world to our family. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Individual, couples, family and group psychotherapy is provided by psychologists and licensed clinical social workers. Traditional reasons for seeking therapy/counseling, include, but are not limited to, treatment of depression, anxiety and/or other psychiatric disorders, the desire to change self-defeating patterns of behavior, gain self-knowledge and acceptance, or utilize support to problem-solve an individual's daily living issues.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient mental health services are available for individuals over age 12. Adult services are centered at Evanston Hospital, while services for adolescents and young adults (ages 12-24) are centered at Highland Park Hospital. Inpatient care is reserved for individuals in crisis whose safety requires a highly structured environment. Both inpatient programs provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient programs are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at Evanston Hospital is a time-limited, structured psychotherapy program designed to meet the needs of patients who are in need of intensive skill building to better cope with mental illness. The program offers structured treatment when conventional outpatient therapy is not sufficient to stabilize an individual’s symptoms. The program helps participants transition through strengthening abilities to identify triggers, utilize coping skills, communicate effectively, and manage stress.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Illinois is designed to help people recover from addiction to a number of substances. The length of each program and its intensity tend to vary, and the plan of care is based on your individual needs.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Couples counseling provides couples with the skills they need to improve their communication, resolve differences, and enhance closeness and intimacy. It also identifies behaviors and attitudes partners frequently do not recognize as problematic and offers alternative ways of relating, which serve to further deepen their sense of connection.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation. The Family Program includes private and multi-family sessions, to support family members throughout the treatment and recovery process.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Horrible!! No continuity between nurse shifts. They are not knowledgeable of events from prior shifts. I received a call at midnight that my wife fell out of bed, and hit her head. My wife has cognitive issues and should have been somewhat restrained. There response was that they would move her to a room closer to the nurse station but needed a Dr. to put in an order in order to restrain her. Never go to this hospital if you are looking for quality care. The icu staff are fantastic accolade’s!!

The ER here used to be great, now expect to wait 2-3 hours before you get care, probably longer if you don’t have insurance. Doesn’t matter if you’re fatigued and vomiting every 30 minutes, at least in my case. Maybe they just need to hire more people, but you will contemplate your life sitting in that waiting room.

UPDATE: The generic response to contact Evanston Hospital and that they care is just meaningless PR control. Once you get in touch with them they give a meaningless and empty ”I’m so sorry” but don’t do anything to fix the problem. In fact the longer my senior Mother has been in the hospital the more problems you learn of and see. Although the nurses are highly skilled they are heavily short staffed and have just taken a pay cut of $5/hour so the top Admin can ensure their grossly inflated salaries and bonuses. Despite the Care Teams efforts to attend adequately to every patient I have come in to find her lying in her own filth. Transportation within the Hospital to medical test and procedures is also delayed. After discharge we are switching out of the Endeavour health system because it is beyond broken and only focusing on profits for the higher ups! WARNING! Evanston Hospital is nickel and diming its patients and visitors for parking to increase its own profits. While staff is instructed to throw the City under the bus telling visitors that the City operated the parking garage, multiple call to the city as well as checking the citie’s websites confirm that Evanston Hospital (or a contractor) is in charge of the parking. While they say they offer a discount from the ridiculous fee of $20 for 6 hours to “just” $4 this adds up especially since it does not allow for multiple entrance and exists. I have a n 82 year old mother who has been in the hospital for about a week and her husband, my Dad, is 83 and needs to go home to get some proper rest and take his own medications so the cost is adding up and no one at the hospital, save for one empathetic employee who validated my ticket so I would not have to pay a 3rd time $4 more in one day. While the hospital says the fee helps to pay for security, signs throughout the garage say that they are not responsible for the vehicles or personal items in the vehicles; at best that’s false adhering and at worse plain out lying to justify a money grab from people who are already dealing with financial strain due to failing healthcare industry we have. I have tried to contact someone to help but it’s a run around with each employing saying to ask someone else or trying to blame the city of Evanston. This monopolistic revenue booster is shameful; please do better!!

Actually the worst ER experience I ever had. I came in here at 9:30 PM because I have been throwing up and had a high fever all day and it is currently 6:30 AM and I am still waiting in the ER waiting room. Unless you are actually having a life threatening experience the second you walk in, DO NOT COME HERE. Especially overnight. The staff is relatively nice, I don’t have any complaints about them but I am in a lot of pain and have just been sitting here for the last 9 hours. I understand that the ER fluctuates but for a few hours I was one of two people in the waiting room and we are both still here now. This is just inexplicable because it has been empty for hours. Just don’t come here if you have a choice.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Hello Gabriela, We are sorry you had to wait. Unfortunately, due to the walk-in nature of the Emergency Room, volumes can fluctuate and we do our very best to provide high quality, efficient care to as many patients as possible. I have shared this feedback with our Emergency Department as we take all feedback seriously. If you would like to discuss this further, please contact our Patient Experience Team directly at healthdesk@eehealth.org.

I have been waiting in the ER for the past 7 hours. No real explanation of why. My issue can be checked pretty quickly so it’s ridiculous that I am still waiting. My vitals have been checked 4 times I guess so they know I’m not dead.

I don't leave reviews unless I feel compelled. The experience was so bad that this needs to be shared. The experience has been horrible. Terrible communication. Appointment times get changed without any notification. Staff is not apologetic, and not helpful. Patient's simple requests are not met (pillow and nausea meds). Nothing gets done until you ask multiple times. Hate Karen's but this place forces you to be a Karen or you get forgotten. Horrible experience.

If you believe you are having an Emergency, DO NOT go to Evanston’s endeavor ER. As someone else said 2 years ago, they will have you wait for hours no matter how empty the waiting room is. I took my dad here because he is over 80, diabetic and for some reason, one of his hand is swelling and getting worse, it’s moving up his arm. I took him to the ER at Evanston endeavor and this is a very big mistake. Since we’ve been sitting here for over 2 hours, they’ll already taken 3 patients that arrived AFTER US, when we were already in the waiting room for over an hour. If you value your life and need actual urgent care, head to another medical facility, anywhere else, you’ll be seen a lot sooner. I am a home owner in Evanston and if any of my tax dollars go toward the hospital, I will be seeking a refund from the city for those dollars because this hospital doesn’t serve me. I’ve came here before and had to leave due to how long I was in the waiting room. Unless you are bleeding out, they will keep you waiting as a tactic not to serve you. I don’t know if it’s because of slow employees or hospital policy.

On December 5, 2024, my mom had a seizure, leading to a diagnosis of stage four lung cancer that had spread to her brain. Since her severe stroke on December 20, 2021, that left her bedbound, I had been her primary caregiver for four years. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the staff on the fourth floor of Evanston Hospital, especially in Room 4125. Peggy was our lifesaver; she treated me with compassion and made me feel human again during our toughest times. Dr. Patel and oncologist Bruce Brockstein were incredibly kind, providing honest and compassionate care as they delivered difficult news. The other nurses, CNAs, and the best station desk staff, were equally supportive, making me feel respected and valued during my visits. Despite the traumatic emotional challenges from our hospice experience, the two weeks at Evanston Hospital were filled with teamwork and a focus on my mom's comfort. We wanted to stay where she felt safe, surrounded by the trusted staff who cared for her. Leaving on December 20, 2024, was heart-wrenching; I wished we could have taken Peggy and the staff with us, as the trust we formed was irreplaceable. Room 4125 and everyone there gave us a beautiful experience in a hard time. Thank you, my angels ❤️

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
