They have board certified psychiatrists, licensed psychologists and counselors as well as licensed clinical social workers LCSWs, marriage and family therapists, and clinical substance abuse counselors.

The PHP program runs Monday to Friday and your length of time there will depend on your situation. It involves an instructional lecture, DBT skills and application training, individual and group therapy, medication safety and management and family meetings.

Their addiction counseling provides an assessment, individual, family or group therapy sessions with certified addiction counselors, education groups and continued counseling care if needed. This program also offers a psychiatric assessment, medication management, and detoxification, referrals elsewhere if needed, plus help with follow up phone care.

I know it's a year ago that I had my emergency gallbladder removal but I read through all the reviews and can't believe it's the same hospital these people are talking about. I had an amazing experience. I was in so much pain. They gave me morfene. I was here more than 12 hours because after surgery my oxygen levels kept falling down to 89 and they wanted to make sure that got sorted out. The nurses and doctors was so friendly, helpful and had so much compassion. I will definitely go back for any surgery or ER visit! God bless every person working at this hospital. If it wasn't for the surgeon I would never have known I had sleep apnea. I am doing so good now!

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment or psychiatric services. The inpatient behavioral health unit is designed to help the patient benefit from evaluation and short-term treatment in a hospital setting. Their daily programming is called Skillful Living, based on the program of Dialectical Behavior Therapy.
outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don't require 24-hour care. Mayo Clinic offers Transitions, a partial hospitalization program that offers an alternative to hospitalization for adults with severe psychiatric illnesses and need an intensive treatment than traditional outpatient. The program utilize dialectical behavioral therapy and other evidence-based approaches.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

The goal of drug rehab in Wisconsin is to address drug addiction as a complex issue that involves physical, mental, and relational aspects. During rehab, treatment focuses on each of these areas and gives you the tools you need to achieve and maintain sobriety.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Our experience at Mayo Clinic Eau Claire has been deeply disheartening. From the outset, we encountered a consistent lack of compassion, communication, and professionalism from many of the nurses and physicians involved in my spouse’s care. Rather than welcoming collaboration or input from those closest to the patient, staff often responded with defensiveness and an air of entitlement. It became painfully clear that any attempt to advocate for better care—no matter how respectfully expressed—was not only unwelcome, but perceived as a threat to their authority. The inability to raise concerns without fear of retaliation is unacceptable in any healthcare setting. Watching someone you love receive inadequate or misguided care, and being powerless to intervene, is a helpless and emotionally devastating experience. Patients deserve respect and dignity, and so do their loved ones. Unfortunately, both have been sorely lacking throughout our time here. Adding to the frustration is the appalling state of the cafeteria. Despite posted meal hours, there is rarely any substantial food available—often nothing more than a soggy, unappetizing sandwich that appears to have been left out for days. After walking what feels like the length of the entire hospital, it’s infuriating to arrive and find nothing nourishing offered. For a facility that holds itself to a “world-class” standard, the basic amenities for patient families are shockingly substandard. Equally concerning is the apparent overuse of repetitive diagnostic tests, with no change in outcomes and no new direction in care. This raises legitimate concerns about whether these procedures are being ordered for medical necessity or for financial gain. When care becomes routine to the point of redundancy—when tests are run again and again with no purpose but to bill insurance—it no longer serves the patient, but the institution. Perhaps most troubling of all is the complete absence of accountability. Staff behavior, no matter how disrespectful or negligent, appears to go unchecked. When concerns are voiced, they are dismissed or met with subtle retaliation in the form of diminished attentiveness to the patient. No one should ever fear that advocating for a loved one will result in worse care—but here, that fear felt very real. I never expected to feel so disillusioned by a hospital with such a prestigious reputation. What we experienced was not world-class medicine, but a system more concerned with protecting its own image than providing thoughtful, patient-centered care. This experience has left us emotionally drained and deeply saddened. I sincerely hope Mayo Clinic Eau Claire takes a hard look at the culture it has cultivated—and begins making meaningful changes.

Definitely recommend going to mayo clinic over Marshfield in this area ATM if you can. Better and faster service; especially with the closest Gunderson being farther away.

Communicated with staff prior to coming in regards to the needs that I have was assured that this location would be able to assist me with my needs. Drove four hours there spent over $300 just to be told immediately during appointment that my case is too complicated. I had requested video visits and phone visits prior to my going to the location and was declined and was told that they'd be able to assist me there. Was not the physician's fault. But the nurse and clinical staff that I spoke with assured me that this wouldn't happen and ended up wasting time and money going all day there for nothing.

Do not go to Dermatologist Emily Fibeger. Forced into unnecessary appointments to force money out of me. Then wouldn't see me to prescribe the medication she knows I NEED in order to function in life. I have a 4 year old and 2 month old. And they won't see me because I had lack of sleep and missed an appointment. I won't be able to work once my body is covered in blisters. Not sure how I will support my family of 4 after that. Do not go to Mayo Clinic.

Important-Please read attachments for full review! My mother and I had a terrible experience with Mayo Clinic in Bloomer and the Emergency Department in Eau Claire. My 78-year-old mother had some medical issues going on and what the previous doctors advised her to do to treat it wasn’t working. One night she had a medical episode that was very concerning, so the next day I made an appointment with a doctor. My husband took my mom to Mayo Clinic in Bloomer. When they got in the room with the doctor my husband called me so I could update the doctor as to what was going on with my mother, because she was living with me at the time. I told him about the episode the night before and informed him as to what had been going on in the last few weeks and what she was doing to treat it. The doctor also made the comment that my mom had lost 6 pounds in a week, which was concerning to him. He then ordered some testing to be done on my mom. The next day I contacted Mayo to see what they had found out as my mother was anxious to hear what they had to say and what they could do to help her. I spoke to a nurse. She told me that the tests came back normal and that the doctor recommended to continue with the same treatment she had been doing. I argued with the nurse and said why would my mom continue doing the same treatment if it isn’t working? I told her that further testing needed to be done to accurately diagnose the problem. I mean isn’t that what a doctor is supposed to do? That is one of the legal responsibilities of the doctor according to the “Duty of Care,” which providers are supposed to abide by. I also told her that the situation had been going on too long and that we needed to get the correct treatment to her soon. She ignored my concerns. The next day I got a call from another Bloomer nurse, not knowing that I had already talked to a nurse the previous day. Not sure how they communicate with one another. Again, this nurse said the same thing, that my mom was supposed to continue with the same treatment. I argued with the nurse and told her that further testing needed to be done, but she wouldn’t listen to me. She became agitated and short with me. Finally in a sarcastic tone she said “Well then make another appointment, but you better do it today, because we are so far booked out that your mother won’t be able to get in for a while.” I did make an appointment for my mother, but unfortunately the appointment was booked so far out that she died before getting to that appointment. Nurses also have what is called a “Duty of Care.” It was the responsibility of those two nurses to convey my concerns to the doctor and unfortunately neither did this. This was a breach of duty! Days later my mom had a major medical episode and I needed to bring her to the Emergency Department in Eau Claire. We checked in going on 10pm and then met with the triage nurse. My mom was crying and in a lot of pain and begging the nurse to get her into see a doctor. The nurse was sarcastic and pointed at the people in the waiting room and sarcastically said to my mom “(mom’s name) do you see all of these people here, they all have emergencies,” mocking my mother. Not one person in the emergency waiting room was crying or in distress. I even told her what had been going on with my mother and that she is bleeding profusely, but she ignored me. It is the responsibility of the triage nurse to assess the situation to determine who needs immediate care, but she failed to do this. Apparently, it was more important to mock my mother when she was clearly in distress! My mom was in a lot of pain and needed to get to a bathroom, because if she didn’t there was going to be blood all over as she couldn’t hold it much longer. The bathrooms near us were full, so I asked the triage nurse if I could take my mom to the bathroom in the emergency room. She told me no. Finally, someone came out of the bathroom. As I was wheeling my mom to the bathroom (she was in a wheelchair due to a foot injury), I looked back at the nurse and told her I was going to report her.
