About Meritus Medical Center

Meritus Medical Center is a nonprofit hospital in Hagerstown, Maryland, offering behavioral health and substance abuse treatment programs. They provide emergency services with short and long term care to help clients in need with programs they need. They serve adult clients.

Their staff comprises mental health specialists, including counselors, therapists, psychiatrists, and nursing staff, who are available to assess and meet clients’ needs. Walk in mental health assessments are also available to help clients in immediate crisis. Services offered include:

The inpatient program is designed for clients with severe symptoms who may be at risk of relapse, hurting themselves, or hurting someone else. During this program, clients reside at the secure facility for the duration of their stay so medical staff can ensure their safety and provide assistance as needed. The inpatient program is rooted in therapy, which includes individual, group, and family therapy, as well as education, case management, and peer support services.

The outpatient program is a lower level of care best for those who have completed a higher level of care (such as the inpatient program) or who have mild symptoms. It uses the same programs and treatments as the inpatient program but allows clients to live at home and visit the facility on a fixed schedule to receive treatment rather than life on site.

If you go to the ER at Meritus be warned they may reuse the same thermometer, cover and all, they just stuck in someone else's mouth into yours without changing the cover. The nurse realized her mistake a little too late. She didn't even apologize, just tried to play it off. Absolutely disgusting. This happened to my 67 year old mother who is now worried she picked up something else while be at the hospital.

Most negative reviews seem to be for emergency services (which I ve never used), but I had my scheduled foot surgery here recently and had an excellent experience. The nurses in pre-op and recovery were so kind and accommodating. They made me feel at ease and cared for. The surgical team was great as well! After my surgery, I had a billing issue, and the billing customer service was very helpful. I got my issue fixed immediately. I can t speak for the ER, but I highly recommend the surgical services here!

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab enables clients to focus exclusively on their recovery while living in a highly structured and supportive environment. Inpatient treatment is typically designed for clients who have just completed detox, are in early recovery, and/or are at an elevated risk of relapse. Their treatment generally involves intensive addiction counseling, including individual, group, and family counseling. Many inpatient rehabs also offer recovery-focused life skills training and/or holistic therapies, such as yoga, massage, and meditation.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
For intensive-level rehab treatment, 24-hour clinical care in Maryland is an essential tool. Medical staff are available around the clock to supervise the process, which involves cleansing the body of toxins. Close supervision is necessary due to the potential risks of withdrawal symptoms. Medical experts on-site are available to prescribe medications and other forms of treatment to address these symptoms and ensure a safe detox process.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

If I could give 0 stars I would've because I went to the ER the day of the incident and they had me wait for 5 hours to not even get me into a room but to have me sitting in a chair in the hallway with dividers. Anyway I had a piece of glass in my foot and it needed to be removed. After 4 hours and 30 minutes they got me back in the chair and attempted to remove the glass inside my foot after 30 minutes the lady said "I'm sorry but there's nothing else I can do and pushed the piece of glass further in my foot. Now let me tell you I had gotten an X-ray at urgent care and the emergency room didn't even looked at my X-ray at all. The picture below is the piece of glass that was pulled out of my foot at home by my Mom and Wife.

unpleasant comes to the hospital to seek help the doctors have too many contradictions between them the one who leaves the doctor and takes the next doctor does not follow instructions my son gave him a zeisure at school I brought him to the hospital more than 24 hours passed they told me they would send him to the children's hospital there they have a pediatric neurologist the one who left the order finished and left the next one had my son on the transfer stretcher all day the night intern came and said she was going to prescribe him and discharged him without doing the EEG she diagnosed him and prescribed him medication for seizures what kind of hospital doesn't have one to do an EEG or is that discrimination? I lost the opportunity to take him on my own to the children's hospital or any other hospital that has neurologists for children because of the inefficiency of the doctors at this center. They have no compassion, mission, empathy for the patients. They leave them lying in chairs and on the floor. I have only seen this in a third world country. It bothers me to see elderly people mistreated when they need the best care. He was about to fall and I asked him for help to fix it and he said: "Give me a few minutes. To be a health professional, it takes charisma to help, no matter how tired you are."

I went to the ER Friday and was unexpectedly admitted. I was 2 south and they had the most professional, caring nurses working on thar floor. Everyone I came into contact with from the ER to being admitted were absolutely wonderful! I have been to meritus many times and this by far was the best experience with staff.

Thank you for the nice review, Ginger. We'll be sure to share it with the staff.

I dislocated my left hips implanted replacement. The pain was far worse than the break. Kyle, Zach and Hannah came to the house and handled me with care. They drove me quickly to Meritus. The team in the ER worked like a well oiled machine. Everything was done in the ER cubicle. Nick and Jim relocated my hip. Dr Lurvey, Roy (Anesthesia), Jessica (RN) and others I cannot remember as I was sedated, all of them were kind and compassionate as they worked to fix me. And fix me they did. I got to go home! Now this is not my first visit, when my husband had a heart attack a few years ago things did not go so well BUT Something Has Changed!!! Going to the ER is not a happy event ever. It's pretty hard to take something so negative and turn it into a positive, however, the team at the Meritus ER seems to be working to make some changes and IT'S WORKING. Many Thanks to everyone that helped me!!!

Worst hospital I've ever seen will put you the hallway in the back and just leave you there will in serve pain and faint feeling they don't care about people they think every one who comes there just wants pain medicine 💔 get it together not every one wants drugs . Animals at a shelter get better treatment then this hospital gives . Go to waynesboro youll get treated like a human should be treated no throw in a hallway
