About Meritus Medical Center

The inpatient program is designed for clients with severe symptoms who may be at risk of relapse, hurting themselves, or hurting someone else. During this program, clients reside at the secure facility for the duration of their stay so medical staff can ensure their safety and provide assistance as needed. The inpatient program is rooted in therapy, which includes individual, group, and family therapy, as well as education, case management, and peer support services.

The outpatient program is a lower level of care best for those who have completed a higher level of care (such as the inpatient program) or who have mild symptoms. It uses the same programs and treatments as the inpatient program but allows clients to live at home and visit the facility on a fixed schedule to receive treatment rather than life on site.

I have had many not so great experiences with the ED here. The last time I went in I was having chest pains and a severe headache that concerned me enough to get checked out (it had been two years since I was at that ED) With chest pains I figured going to urgent care wasn't wise. When I got there I was in full blown panic mode and they did check me in right away. They did an EKG and then sat me in a hall in a chair. Mind you I was having a 9/10 headache (I do have migraine history) and neck pain radiating down my arm. I had to beg them for an ice pack which they took a bit to give me. Then they decided to have a student interview me. Again I was almost throwing up, couldn't have my eyes in the light with a severe headache and this student was asking me 100 questions. I still answered them but then they shuffled me into another room that was like a waiting room. It was very bright in there (still absolutely no one acknowledged the pain I was in or that the lights and sounds were making it much worse.) I sat in this chair with my fingers in my ears, covering my eyes with this ice pack on my head to try and cope with this pain that felt like my head was splitting apart. The nurse that was at the desk noticed me and asked if I'd like to be in a dark room. I was like yes thank god. So she did put me in a dark room with a curtain, gave me a blanket. Shortly after she came in, started an IV and gave me fluids and some medicine for nausea. After the infusion was done I felt a lot better and the pain was way down. The nurse came in and said the provider said my tests look good and I could go home. Mind you I never saw this provider. I only saw the student doctor and the RN. When I got home I looked at my labs and other results and saw my EKG showed enlarged left atrium which was totally new and not normal. No one discussed this with me even though there were baselines to compare it to and see it was a change and not my normal. They still did not address what was causing the chest pain and headache. In fact, I was made to feel like I was possibly fabricating it because my tests were "good". After the visit to the ED I figured out that the cause of the severe headache and chest pain were actually because I had started an ADHD med and I was having a bad reaction to it. Again I had informed them I started this med and what it was and it didn't trigger a concern with them although in hindsight, it should've been one of the first things they suspected. I also heard the students talking about tests they were doing on me (one was a blood level of a seizure med I'm on) and the others possibly to check for drugs? Idk that's the impression I got but the results never showed up on mychart but I know they did them. I know it's basically our only option here as far as a hospital, but it should be better. They didn't even address the panic attack I was having. If someone is panicking and you're at a hospital shouldn't they take it seriously? No they didn't. I got no referral about it and no one even brought it up. I didn't ask for any meds, I should add, because I felt like afterwards, that they may have thought I just went there for that and I think it affected how they treated me. Which is really sad. Because they saw in my tests that I wasn't on any substances yet I was treated as if my issues were minor and a student could handle it. I'm pretty sure the provider was supposed to see me but all I saw was the student and RN. It could be much better there. They could treat everyone without bias or judgment. They could go into treating someone with assuming that person is making things up. They could address the issues that bring people there. But, that doesn't seem like what's going on.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Inpatient rehab enables clients to focus exclusively on their recovery while living in a highly structured and supportive environment. Inpatient treatment is typically designed for clients who have just completed detox, are in early recovery, and/or are at an elevated risk of relapse. Their treatment generally involves intensive addiction counseling, including individual, group, and family counseling. Many inpatient rehabs also offer recovery-focused life skills training and/or holistic therapies, such as yoga, massage, and meditation.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

For intensive-level rehab treatment, 24-hour clinical care in Maryland is an essential tool. Medical staff are available around the clock to supervise the process, which involves cleansing the body of toxins. Close supervision is necessary due to the potential risks of withdrawal symptoms. Medical experts on-site are available to prescribe medications and other forms of treatment to address these symptoms and ensure a safe detox process.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

After being in the emergency room for a fractured hip, they made me wait eight hours and still did not discharge me so I left. I had a workers comp claim paper to have filled out. I went to the hospital billing. They would not do it. they told me they could not take it to the emergency room that I needed to come back And take the paper 100 yards over to the emergency room once I got to the emergency room they told me they could not fill it out because I left. I have never had worst experiences in any hospital than I have with Meritus. I see why they have a two star review they should have a one star or none at all

I went In 22 weeks pregnant seeking help with a fever, positive COVID to only be treated as if I was fighting drug abuse. It speaks to the population they treat which is sad. The nurses were extremely rude. It’s a very filthy place. They have you waiting in the hallway which I’m okay with however, they start you there but then tell you to wait in the waiting room. In the waiting room is where they do vital, draw blood in front of everyone, ask you personal questions in front of everyone. I will drive 40 mins to Frederick hospital. I’ll never come here again. I was so upset with the way I was treated that my husband and I decided to leave and go somewhere else after waiting 4 hours. I’m actually disgusted that this will be my delivery location. Looking into a tour before delivery. FYI I have a picture to share of the lady drawing labs in the waiting room and more than welcome to share it with owner. I work in the medical field. I’m actually going to contact OCR to report this hospital. Erica Zuniga

If I could give no stars I would. My grandfather was admitted to the fifth floor of the east wing of the hospital for wound care. He went from walking and talking into the ER to no longer responsive or awake. By two days of being there he lost the ability to get up out of bed and walk. When I and other family members would go to visit he would ask us to “break him out of prison” with what words he could barely get out that was clear as day. When we would push the call button to help him up to use the bedside pan it Would take over thirty mins to get some help. A Cna or nurse named Sharon was the absolute worst she would roll her eyes and huff and puff/sigh like she was so inconvenienced to do her job. As a radiologic tech myself I understand how the job can be stressful but I also understand empathy and compassion. So seeing this was infuriating. In the end he got his wish to come home, unfortunately he passed away. I can guarantee if he wasn’t admitted in the first place he would still he here today.

Worst hospital I've ever been too, the lack of respect they showed is disgusting! Literally with the construction they put patients in the hallway shoulder to shoulder and have you explain your issue and expect you to be detailed with 5 other people listening. Patient confidentiality? Dont expect that at all. Still sitting in the damn waiting room with a bleeding stomach !

My concerns were not met, I was treated horribly, I was put back out in the waiting room in extreme pain 4 different times in 1 visit. My Hippa rights as well as other patients were absolutely violated. The triage set up is horrible, a thin piece of fabric between 3 patients in a tiny room DOES NOT protect any of my Hippa rights at all because those other two patients saw me come in and also HEARD everything myself and the PA discussed and when I told the staff it’s violating my Hippa rights the NP said “she knew and felt the same way about it and staff have brought it to managements attention and were ignored about it”. Then they ran an unnecessary pregnancy test to make sure I’m not pregnant which isn’t even possible because my tubes were completely removed years ago and the PA said “it’s still possible to get pregnant without your tubes”, again the knowledge your staff have of the human anatomy completely baffles me. Absolutely no excuse as to why I had to give my name DOB and ALL of my past and current medical history in front of all the other patients in the lobby numerous times with nothing to protect my privacy around me as well as needing to undue my pants and pull them down enough to show my left side of my bare butt in front of other patients with no regard to my privacy so they could put a patch on me to try to help with pain and be administered a shot in front of others for the pain then just get left back in the lobby to not even be checked on to see if it helped because it did not help at all. I was told I would get a HIP CT from the PA as well as a lumber spine ct because I came in for extreme pain in my left hip and lower left back and they didn’t even run the correct scan and when I brought it to 6 different staff member’s attention they told me “ the pelvis and hip are the same thing” which is absolutely incorrect and concerning they don’t understand it’s different and that it’s different ct scans as well, they told me told they don’t do hip CT’s unless there is a trauma after they handed me my discharge paperwork and I said, “I don’t know why I’m being discharged when my concerns weren’t addressed after sitting in here for about 9 hours.” I left worse than when I came in. I was discharged from Meritus in tears in front of everyone after they refused to give me an xray or mri like I requested even though EVERY staff member I spoke to told me I NEEDED an MRI but that they “couldn’t give me one because then everyone who comes in for pain would want one” then when the NP asked about pain medicine to help the pain at home I very specifically told her I did not want oxycodone or any hard narcos because I have 3 children I have to take care of at home and need to be in the right state of mind she did not listen to me and prescribed it to me anyway. I went in knowing I would be there all day because that’s just how ER’s are but I never expected to feel so violated, disrespected and unheard and mistreated. Not only were my rights violated but the other patients rights were too, like the lady with a glucose of 39, the man who needed a pain patch on his hip, the boy having chest pain, the teen boy throwing up blood (who was not treated with urgency) the woman who had loss of vision, hearing and had a headache who was also not treated with urgency just to give example of a few. Meritus failed not only myself but so many other patients. I would like my complaint to be sent directly to Tammy Marrioti for review.
