About Montefiore Medical Center – Inpatient

Montefiore Medical Center is located in the Bronx in New York. The center was originally founded in 1884 and was for invalids who had been denied care from other medical facilities. The medical center now has a comprehensive psychiatry unit, which includes treatment for mental health and co-occurring substance use disorders (SUD).

The center treats adolescents and adults. They accept insurance from Medicaid, Medicare and most major private providers.

Accessing Medical Detoxification in the Bronx

The center in the Bronx has a medically managed detoxification unit where most individuals stay for 3-4 days. This is a secure unit with staff on site 24/7.

I noticed that a social worker creates a discharge plan while you’re in the detox unit, ensuring your care will be seamless after discharge. Detox may include ongoing medication treatment with buprenorphine.

The program provides referrals to outpatient or residential treatment programs upon discharge. Follow-up plans are determined based on a client’s mental health, treatment history, and support network.

Supporting Your Mental and Physical Health

The medical center is only three miles from Bronx Park, which is home to the New York Botanical Gardens and the Bronx Zoo. Clients can integrate the biking and walking paths into their treatment program once they’re in an outpatient setting.

The clinicians take a compassionate and integrated approach to addiction and mental health issues with evidenced based treatment modalities. The center is affiliated with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, which offers clinicians access to the most innovative treatment options.

Treatment is customized to the type and severity of your addiction, and whether or not there are co-occurring disorders present. Treating addiction and mental health disorders simultaneously results in better treatment outcomes, and here you’ll receive comprehensive care to offer you the best foundation for continued sobriety.

Accepted Insurance

Montefiore Medical Center – Inpatient works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

The partial hospitalization program (PHP) level of care offers short-term, intensive rehab for individuals with acute symptoms that require focused management but don't require 24/7 care. PHP treatment provides structured programming (i.e. individual and group therapy) and allows you to return home in the evening. PHP treatment typically meets weekly for a minimum of 20 hours with the duration typically averaging 90 days. While PHP treatment cost can vary, it is often covered by most providers.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Clients who enroll in an intensive outpatient program (IOP) are typically either in early recovery or are experiencing a crisis that increases their relapse risk. These programs promote clients' sustained sobriety through robust support, including multiple, extended care sessions per week. Intensive outpatient treatment often encompasses an array of services, including psychotherapy, recovery education, and evidence-based holistic therapies, such as acupuncture and meditation. Many outpatient rehabs also offer medication assisted treatment (MAT).

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Alcohol rehab in New York can help individuals overcome alcoholism. This alcohol addiction is characterized by drinking alcohol compulsively, being unable to control how much you drink, and feeling anxious or stressed when you're not drinking. Treatment for alcohol addiction may involve brief intervention, an outpatient program, or inpatient alcohol rehab in New York. The main goal of treatment is to stop alcohol use to improve quality of life.

When you choose drug rehab in New York, you'll participate in a variety of treatments that are designed to help you live a drug-free lifestyle. Common methods of treatment include group, individual, and family counseling, medication management, nutrition, exercise, and management of co-occurring mental health disorders.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

In New York you'll find substance abuse treatment programs that can help you address your addiction, and any co-occurring mental health disorders. These programs utilize evidence-based therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and psychodynamic approaches to help you achieve recovery and new tools to sustain it. With various treatment options available, including outpatient, inpatient, and residential programs, you'll be able to find the resources and right level of care you need to effectively treat your addiction.

Programs

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy involves working through the psychological and emotional impact of a traumatic event. You learn to identify the triggers and develop coping mechanisms that build a sense of safety and trust in yourself.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

In addiction treatment, recreational therapy focuses on engaging you in healthy activities to help reduce your cravings and improve your mental well being. You might engage in activities like cooking classes, hiking, group sports, or swimming as a constructive outlet for stress and emotions that help your recovery.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

During dialectical behavior therapy in New York, you and your therapist will look for triggers and patterns that are guiding your emotions. This involves keeping a diary of your emotions and situations and sharing this each week with the therapist. This information will determine what you work on in each session.

I’m extremely disappointed with the level of service and professionalism my wife and I received during our recent antenatal visit. From the moment we arrived, we were met with a dismissive and disrespectful tone that made the entire experience uncomfortable and upsetting—especially during what should be a supportive time in our pregnancy journey. The medical assistant, Michelle, was particularly rude. She spoke to my wife in a degrading manner, as if she were beneath her, and at one point even referenced her in a way that was reminiscent of a Section 8 stereotype. It was offensive, uncalled for, and completely unacceptable in a healthcare setting. To make matters worse, when we attempted to address the situation, the office manager, Jamie Ferguson, showed zero accountability or professionalism. Instead of listening and resolving the issue, she brushed us off, making it clear that patient experience was not a priority. Healthcare providers are supposed to offer compassionate and respectful care, especially in sensitive departments like antenatal services. Unfortunately, this visit left us feeling disrespected and deeply discouraged. I sincerely hope Montefiore takes the time to re-evaluate how patients are being treated at this location—because what we experienced should never happen to anyone.

This place needs a complete overhaul. No one picks up a phone, everyone is afraid to give answers. A friend of mind was given a phone and the number was not in service. The 4 South floor answeres the phone but keeps you on hold, and when there is a response things still get messed up. On 5 North the people were professional because I was present , but once my friend was moved ot 4 south, well things went south from there . I thought I was back in the 70's and 80s again. Some one needs to get in there and fix it up , asap.
