About North Shore University Hospital

North Shore University Hospital provides emergency, primary, and behavioral health care for clients of all ages in Manhasset, New York. Their Behavioral Health Department has an inpatient treatment center for adults struggling with mental illness, substance abuse disorder, or a combination of both.

While they’re living on site at the center, clients may have access to services like counseling, addiction education, and peer support groups to help them work through their disorder. They may also be able to detox here if they need to remove drugs or alcohol from their bodies before participating in any other treatments. This unit is best for people who would be a danger to themselves or to others if they continue trying to recover from home. Here, they will receive 24/7 nursing care, medication management, and access to other departments within the hospital.

Once they’ve finished their inpatient treatment program, the clients may work with their doctors and nurses to decide what’s the next best step for them. Sometimes, this means going to an outpatient clinic, or they may be able to continue their treatments from home. They should leave with a detailed aftercare plan that will help them achieve long term recovery.

Waste of time! Spent 7.5 hours here for them to do the same exact 2 tests that I already told them were negative from urgent care. Nobody cared to figure out the swelling in my legs. The end result was they told me to go see a specialist so thank you for that message after a whole 7.5 hours of wasted time. I will tell everyone about my experience and never go to this hospital again! The first question I was asked upon seeing any doctor 3 hours into my stay was well if you went to urgent care then why are you here? I don t know what is causing this. Urgent care told me to go to the hospital for further tests. They didn t even do blood work. Urgent care did more in 1.5 hours with two exams and blood work than a 7.5 hour emergency room visit that left us more confused than when we walked in.

I had scheduled wrist surgery here on 3/31. My experience was exceptional from the moment I arrived. I was treated with respect and compassion by everybody I met.My surgeon, Dr Megan Mizera is an excellent young doctor. She is knowledgeable, positive and full of energy who made sure to call me personally the day after surgery. She did an amazing job as I am now day 2 post op with no pain or swelling and able to move all my fingers. Amazing! The anesthesiologist was excellent in explaining the process and making sure the nerve block injection was barely noticeable. Unfortunately, I didn't retain his name so he clearly did a great job :-)Victorya and Kathleen were my check-in and after care nurses. I feel so much gratitude for the kindness, care and compassion I received from both! They were truly instrumental in getting me through the experience.A heartfelt "Thank You!" goes out to all the nursing and OR staff, PAs and residents whose names I don't remember but their smiles and encouragements will stay with me.Thank You All!

North Shore University HospitalI had surgery here and spent a few days recovering, and overall, it was a strong 4-star experience. I chose NSUH over Lenox Hill in Manhattan because my mother, Lisa Rose Litvin Shapiro, R.N., is an ER nurse here and she visited me every day. Her support as both a nurse and mom meant the world. She s one of the many amazing caregivers who make NSUH special.Shoutout to the all-stars:Lorrie Smith, R.N. (PACU): Calm, compassionate, and professional.Marissa Brandt, R.N. (2 Monti, Day shift): Attentive and reassuring.Hernel, R.N. (2 Monti, Night shift): Respectful and gentle.James Easton, Chaplain Resident: Offered real spiritual comfort and encouragement in both PACU and 2 Monti. As a veteran, I felt seen and supported here. Also, I want to highlight the kosher food program, which was honestly impressive for a hospital. Meals were under top-tier hashgacha, thoughtfully packaged (even for Shabbos), and reflected real sensitivity to religious needs. It made me feel respected on a deeper level.Yes, there were a few bumps mostly administrative or communication-based. But the people on the ground? Outstanding. To NSUH leadership: If you're reading this and want to know what it would take to turn this into a 5-star review from a grateful patient and veteran, I m open to a private conversation. I am happy to share detailed feedback.#VeteranStrong #KosherCare #ThankYouHashem Aryeh U.

Accepted Insurance

North Shore University Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient rehabs offer an intermediate level of care for clients who do not require the kind of intensive supervision and support an inpatient program typically provides. Many clients transition into outpatient care immediately after exiting inpatient treatment. Others enter outpatient programs upon completing detox. Some facilities offer ambulatory medical detox for clients who do not require hospitalization. Most outpatient rehabs offer a combination of services, including addiction counseling, life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

I rally for Northwell hospitals , specifically The Manhasset one. My brother recently had open heart surgery and from beginning to the end all top notch service. Customer service is what Northwell strives on and it never lacks. Every employee is at your beck and call literally. Dr Stevan Pupovac was the heart surgeon and he is the kindest, most patient and will explain and draw every picture to help you understand what is needed to get you back to recovery, not to mention he is so handsome. To sum it up this hospital saved my brothers life And we thank God for ever one’s part in that.

My husband had scheduled sternum surgery here on 4/25. Our experience was exceptional throughout his stay. We were treated with respect and compassion by everybody we met. The nurses were wonderful. His surgeon, Dr. William Shi and his partner were outstanding. The anesthesiologist was also outstanding, She explained everything in detail and listened to our concerns. His ICU nurses, Kevin, Jillian and Aldin, were also outstanding They were very attentive and patient. His nurses on the second floor, Alicia, Madeleine and Shaundelle McLean, also went above and beyond. We can't say enough great things about the care he received from all the medical professionals who made this surgery go as smoothly as possible. Thank you all.

Northwell manhasset hospital is the best hospital in ny state. I came here from Mount Sinai. Looking for a 2nd opinion. Mount sinia said I had alot of major issues that didn't feel correct. After going to northwell I recieved a full mri, sono gram of the heart and stomach. After speaking to many docter and doing plenty of testing the came to me with the solution. If I had not came here I would still be in shambles. What they did for me here compared to any other hospital is night and day no comparison. I'm an oceanside resident so figure the closer the better. But that's not true always get a 2nd opinion from northwell or make it your first choice. The equipment is extremely high tech & very easy to work with. All of the doctors and nurses have alot of exspirence and knowledge nothing compared to any other establishments. I thank God I cry to God. Thank you for leading me to northwell they found all the issues were minor and very treatable with a plan of action moving foward. & the food is gourmet chefs. Truly a blessing that I came here now I know what's going on by taking the time and the correct action. I can say I'm still alive today and looking forward to life after leaving northwell. A++++ PLEASE ANY ONE IF U NEED MIDICAL ASSISTANCE GO TO NORTHWELL MANHASSET. all of the professionals in ER and Orange 🍊 section of the ER is superior and elite. Every one is extremely professional, knowledgeable, responsible & respectful. Thank you for all the assistance northwell. 😊

My doctor recommended that I go here or Stony Brook Hospital. I chose to go here because I thought this was the flagship of Northwell Hospital. The emergency room holding rooms and bathrooms were filthy. When I pointed it out they called to have it cleaned, which never happened in my 3 hour wait. I would never go here if I had a choice.
