About Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services

Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services provides mental health and addiction treatment for children, adolescents and adults at various locations throughout Michigan. At their Kalamazoo Clinic, they offer in person and virtual behavioral health care services. They accept self pay and most commercial insurance plans.

I like that this clinic specializes in treating a range of conditions. Their multidisciplinary team includes skilled and experienced counselors, clinicians, therapists and psychiatrists. While this location has only outpatient treatment, they can access Pine Rest’s entire network, which includes inpatient hospital services. If you need a higher level of care than they can offer here, they’ll connect you to the right resources.

Some of the services they provide here include individual, couples, family and group counseling, medication management and recovery focused education. During your counseling sessions, you’ll work with your therapist to uncover some of the underlying issues that might be contributing to your condition. They’re trained to address a variety of concerns including addictions, mood disorders like depression, relationship issues and stress. If you’d like spiritual care or want to work specifically with a Christian counselor, they can accommodate that request.

Many clients are satisfied with the care they receive here, noting that their counselors are empathetic and helpful. However, some have experienced negative interactions with the staff members that they believe interfered with their ability to heal.

I had used Pine Rest for years without issue until recently. I scheduled an appointment as usual, but before my scheduled time, Pine Rest called and left a voicemail stating my provider would no longer be available for the scheduled time. No big deal. However, about a week later, I received a letter stating I was being discharged for missed appointments even though they were the ones who canceled on me.I reached out multiple times for clarification and was repeatedly told someone would get back to me. It wasn t until my third attempt that I finally received a call. I spoke with a man named Jon Weeldreyer, he informed me that I could no longer see my previous psychiatrist but could be accepted by a different provider. Then towards the end of a pleasant call, out of nowhere, he launched into a stern, almost scolding tone, saying, You have built up quite a reputation for not being kind to the staff. I was completely blindsided. I had been nothing but patient and understanding about the situation. When I asked what I had supposedly done, he admitted he didn t know any details only that it may be something to do with what you re doing right now. When I referenced his claim that I was being rude, he immediately corrected me, saying he never used that word. I pointed out that he had said not kind, which is just a synonym. This kind of petty semantics game perfectly illustrates how conversations at this clinic are handled deflective, manipulative, and designed to make you doubt yourself rather than provide real answers. At no point have I ever been disrespectful to their staff. In fact, I work with troubled youth at a juvenile facility and coach a peewee hockey team I know how to conduct myself and treat people with respect. What I do find disrespectful is making baseless accusations, refusing to provide any justification, and then gaslighting me when I ask for an explanation. This experience has been an absolute nightmare, and I wouldn t recommend Pine Rest to anyone. If this is how they treat long-term patients, I can t imagine how they handle those in real crisis.

Accepted Insurance

Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Pine Rest’s outpatient clinics provide counseling, psychotherapy and psychiatric services for individuals of all ages as well as couples, families and groups. Pine Rest offers outpatient substance use disorder treatment to adults, adolescents and families in 12 licensed outpatient clinics throughout West Michigan. Outpatient substance use treatment is provided by experienced credentialed therapists and is generally facilitated through the use of individual one-to-one sessions lasting 45 to 60 minutes. All therapists are capable of treating persons with both mental health and substance use disorders.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is designed for individuals with a substance use disorder who require more than weekly counseling and less than residential care. The program provides monitoring several times a week in a supportive group setting. The group meets three times a week, mornings or evenings, for three hours. Participants attend for three to eight weeks, with four weeks being the average.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services are designed to assist family members and significant others who have loved ones suffering from substance use disorders. Denial often serves to sabotage attempts to help those we love get the help they so desperately need. An addiction intervention program provides a safe and supportive and highly successful means of helping the family break through denial and gain a commitment to accept treatment.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
This outpatient treatment group provides a safe and supportive learning environment for persons recovering from substance use disorders. This service is ideal for those who have already completed other treatment programs and need continuing care or for those who have had some recovery success but struggle with relapse. The group meets for 90 minutes once a week. The new member is asked to commit to attending 12 consecutive groups/weeks. Attendance beyond 12 weeks is permissible and encouraged if continued support is needed.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Michigan provides personalized treatment to help individuals break this cycle and regain control of their lives. Treatment methods are used in various levels of care, including inpatient rehab, partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient programs, and standard outpatient treatment.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. The family program is a 10-week series designed to assist family members in understanding the disease of addiction and to develop healthy coping skills.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I came to Pine Rest seeking help for anxiety and depression, hoping for comprehensive, compassionate support. Unfortunately, my experience was disappointing and frustrating from the start. The first psychiatric provider I saw did not seem focused on my care, and I felt that my concerns were not being addressed. I discussed this with my therapist, who is also an employee of Pine Rest, and she supported my decision to switch to a different provider at the office in hopes of receiving better care. However, before the switch could even take place, I was informed that I would not be seen by the new provider at all unless I stopped or immediately reduced my legal cannabis use. While cannabis helps with my symptoms, it is not the primary reason I use it. The issue arose when I was told that my legal consumption would prevent me from continuing care, despite being transparent about my approach. What I found most troubling was how my treatment was overshadowed by the organization’s religious views, which appeared to be influencing medical decisions. Mental health care should be based on evidence and compassion, not personal or religious beliefs, especially when those beliefs affect a patient’s access to care. It’s disappointing to be told that my approach to managing my health, which is legal and transparent, disqualifies me from receiving treatment. In addition, I faced consistent delays, with nearly every appointment starting 20 to 30 minutes late, without any explanation or apology. This lack of respect for my time only added to the stress of an already difficult process. While I appreciated my therapist’s efforts and kindness, the overall experience made it clear that Pine Rest isn’t the right place for me. I’ve chosen to seek care elsewhere—somewhere I can receive support that focuses on my health without conditions or judgment.

My doctor referred me to this place twice. They've failed to honor 2 consecutive appointments in 4 months. The first they cancelled because it was too cold outside back in January. Today I spent an hour trying to figure out their janky online appointment system. It sucks and they didn't answer the phone until 9:03am. A brillant support staff member told me I couldn't see anyone because I was 3 minutes late for my online appointment. Now I probably have to wait another 3 months just to find a trustworthy clinc. If you or a family member struggles with any mental health issues, I still can't tell you where to get any help. I can only recommend that you keep searching for a clinic that's serious about mental health. Good luck.

Shannon Thompson of Pine Rest has probably made me WANT to relapse. The amount of stress and anxiety I received from their program was pitiful. As a person in recent recovery, I would not recommend this place to anyone. I was told I could not re join my group due to admitting myself in a different rehabilitation center and that I no longer qualified because I was “too sober.” It has taken weeks even months to even try to figure out my situation. My legal affairs have been severely affected by Pine Rest. It was made clear to me that they are in it for the pay check; they could care less about a person’s recovery and safety. They made me feel as if getting more intensive treatment was a punishment. Shannon Thompson even accused me of lying due to me needing to go to an in-house facility. I was not comfortable to share all of my life details over a zoom IOP and I would never apologize for that. I thought it was a therapist’s job to help me through recovery rather than point fingers…

When you asked to be seen by a therapist and they put you with someone for almost a year who does nothing but put the same thing in your chart "patient shows improvement" but yet there is nothing different and then you find out it's because you've been seeing a guidance counselor... which is odd because I never got guidance or input.. very disappointing even after I told them my medical trauma and everything. Give mental health help a bad name!

I was at Pine Rest for alcohol detox about 10 years ago. It would not have been my choice, but at the time there were no other options. If you are not a devout Christian, avoid this place at all costs. These people were not good Christians. They were rude, unprofessional, condescending, judgmental, and sanctimonious. I was violently ill when I came in, and received no medication to aid with the detox aside from Vistaril, which is an antihistamine prescribed off label for anxiety. It also happens to be extremely dangerous when mixed with alcohol, which was still in my system at the time. In hindsight, I was lucky I did not have a seizure and die. To be very, very clear, I was not drunk or belligerent - I was polite and compliant despite being looked down upon by staff. All I wanted was some rest, but one of the nurses told me I had to attend an AA meeting immediately. When I told them I would try to make it, sick as I was, they replied "No, you WILL make it." This was the pervasive attitude of nearly all the staff - talking down to me like I was a child and showing no decency or compassion. I felt like all they saw me as was a degenerate drunk rather than a human being with a serious medical condition. Thankfully, I was able to get sober after going to another facility. I got my masters degree in social work and am now a therapist myself. I strive to show unconditional positive regard to all my clients no matter what condition they are in. Looking back on this experience years later, I can thank Pine Rest for teaching me how NOT to treat my clients, especially when they are in the most vulnerable positions they have ever known. I suppose that's worth a star.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Pine Rest strives to provide compassionate and expert care to everyone who seeks treatment. We regret that was not your detox experience 10 years ago. Thank you for sharing your experience.
