About Syracuse VA Medical Center – Watertown Community Based OP

Watertown VA Clinic is an outpatient facility in Watertown, New York. They offer primary care and various specialty services. This ranges from mental healthcare to smoking and tobacco cessation. The latter involves counseling, nicotine replacement therapy and the use of medicine to manage nicotine withdrawal. They even offer women veterans care and dietary support. Their mental health care serves veterans facing common behavioral challenges. Some of this includes substance addiction, PTSD and depression.

These conditions are common among veterans due to unresolved trauma from past combat missions. Or other traumatic experiences during active service. This facility provides support, counseling and therapeutic care to veterans dealing with these challenges. Their outpatient mental health programs include consultation, evaluation and counseling. Clients participate in both individual and group sessions to address the root causes of their behavioral issues while building strong coping skills. This program may also involve coordinating medication management with their primary care providers.

This program makes sense for many fantastic reasons. They accept same-day appointments or walk-in express care for urgent health issues. Telehealth options are also available through HIPAA-compliant audio or video conferencing platforms. They provide both home telehealth services and store-and-forward telehealth that lets you securely receive or send health information to experts at VA facilities. The facility may even allow you access to services if you’re not enrolled in VA health care. The best part is their flexible funding options.

The facility accepts Medicaid, Medicare and TRICARE. Various commercial and private insurance plans are also acceptable. Uninsured veterans can pay out of pocket by phone, online, in person or by mail. Financial aid is also available via VA financial hardship assistance to help you pay for treatment. If eligible, you can benefit from various travel perks for your treatment. This includes round-trip transportation from your home to the medical center, mileage reimbursement or special mode transport.

Comments from past clients reflect a mixed experience. Many complained about their overall poor quality, citing long wait times, difficulties with appointment scheduling and unprofessionalism on the part of their care personnel. Still, a few genuinely commend them for the facility for their quality of care referring to the staff as helpful and knowledgeable.

This is the worst VA clinic in the world. I had an appointment with my primary care provider in July 2024 and flew to Wateor it. On the day of the appointment, they called me in the morning to cancel because the provider was unavailable.I rescheduled and asked them to providwith a date when I was available, as I needed to return. They respoby with either not having anything available or suggesting a phone appointment. I insisted that I needed to be seen in person for my annual appointment. After that, I received no further communication from them. Finally, on November 26 2024, they called to schedule my apointment, four months later. I told them I would not be coming back to this clinic. This clinic is truly the worst.is Tley really don't care about veterans.

This place is the exact reason why veterans kill themselves. It's nothing but run around run around run around until they call you (IF they do) and tell you that your referral was denied. Oh but don't forget to go online and look at your results yourself because they will diagnose you with something that requires monitoring and daily medication BUT NOT CALL AND TELL YOU ABOUT IT OR PRESCRIBE THE MEDICATION. This place is a joke. Dont waste your time.

Other Forms of Payment

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient programs are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). Intensive Outpatient Services is ideal for those suffering more serious mental health concerns, it offers more contact and treatment time.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you choose drug rehab in New York, you'll participate in a variety of treatments that are designed to help you live a drug-free lifestyle. Common methods of treatment include group, individual, and family counseling, medication management, nutrition, exercise, and management of co-occurring mental health disorders.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Syracuse Behavioral Health Outpatient Clinic (BHOC) offers individual therapy for Veterans identifying as LGBT. Staff are provided with annual LGBT sensitivity training, as well as a Transgender Mental Health Services training. Additional services included family and couples therapy for LGBT Veterans. Therapy is available for Veterans wanting to explore their sexual orientation/identity further. The LGBT population is also welcome to receive other treatment modalities based on their needs.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Fitness therapy blends exercise with psychotherapy for a fun, inspiring, and effective way of treating addiction and other issues. By incorporating movement into counseling sessions, clients become more empowered, motivated, and goal-oriented, all while strengthening their bodies and becoming more flexible. Fitness Therapy is usually used to complement a course of treatment (inpatient or outpatient) to make it even more successful. Increasing the connection between a patient’s mind and body helps both with healing as well as in creating new, healthy habits.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Syracuse VA Medical Center has an outpatient Nutrition Clinic staffed by registered dietitians. Their mission is to help improve the nutritional status of the population they serve by addressing their nutritional concerns. Whether your nutrition questions arise due to a medical condition or simply the desire to live a healthier life, their clinical staff can help you plan meals and snacks that will contribute to better health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Delivered a DoorDash order to an employee here (Chasity M) and was disappointed to receive no tip, especially considering the time, gas, and effort it takes to complete these deliveries. I expected better appreciation from staff at a healthcare facility. Just a heads-up to other delivery drivers.

I only have one complaint about this place. The wait times on the phone are horrible. I was waiting for 20:57 and I called right after they opened. This isn't the 1st time I've had this issue. The doctors and nurses are pretty good, though.

My husband was having problems with his blood pressure and heart rate, Dr Marshall was great and his nurse Nichole was Very helpful and extremely caring in helping get it under control. They put my mind at ease that he would be ok.

First time to a VA clinic and though I have heard some horror stories about them, I went in with high hopes. Those hopes were quickly shut down! Went in and there's no clear signs as to what to do when you first walk in. All you see is a glass wall and seats in front of it. After waiting for about 15 mins, I decided to talk to one of the workers who was behind a window. The dude looked annoyed and gave off a bad vibe. Next, one of the providers there came out to talk to me only to pawn me off with some ther VA in Syracuse. This place is of little to NO use! I can't even imagine the rest of these places.

Not surprised that this VA is just as s****** as any other VA with workers who are just here for the government job title with nasty, horrid attitudes as though you are bothering them by asking questions. The fluffy dude got offensive because I asked a question stating “you guys”, MEANING THE VA. Anyone with a piece of brain could have figured that out 🙄 But he chose to respond with “not me”. Of course not you, fool. Context clues, lil buddy. You can’t even do a walk in for medicine if you’re from out of state. So, they would rather a person go through withdrawal, not take seizure meds, or life saving meds because you aren’t established at their clinic. Yeah, this clinic is just as ghetto as the building it’s in. It’s in an old grocery store building. So, if you’re thinking about coming here, DON’T! I’d rather perish at home than go to the VA and deal with rude check-in people. Like, you check people in for a living, so why are you sitting at a desk with a frown and nasty attitudes. You click buttons for a living. Be happy and smile. And stop GOSSIPING ABOUT OTHER CO-WORKERS ESPECIALLY IN FRONT OF PATIENTS! I did not need to hear about the retired lady that still works and “doesn’t know how to be retired”. Maybe you are just as annoying as you claim her to be. Maybe you should take a page from her book and work just as hard as her and stop being gossiping, angry bums. It’s awkward to listen to backstabbers, especially when I don’t know them. Do your job and stop talking bad about people, because you three are not the ones to be talking crap about anyone.

Honestly I am blown away with the care I've received from this facility. When I heard of the VA in the past, it seem strictly in a negative connotation. That it not what I've received from this facility. On my first visit was with Bee was nothing but kind and helpful. Dr.Marshall is by far the most professional, knowledgeable, and caring doctor I've ever had the pleasure to meet. Finally the reason that reminded me to write this review was that I had Covid these last couple of days and lost track of which day it was, so unfortunately I missed my appointment today. I was frantic until I spoke with Briam. He was professional and kind while rescheduling my appointment for a much earlier time than anticipated. Thank you Watertown VA!
