Hello! To anyone planning on admitting here, I would like to give you my true, honest thoughts about this facility as a client who has experienced their Residential, PHP and IOP programs. I understand how treatment is something that is incredibly difficult to start and should not be treated lightly, due to the complex and vulnerable nature of eating disorders. It is crucial to note, my intention in this review is not to sugar coat it by all means, I would just like to give information and advice that I wish I would've known before being admitted. Like everything in one's life, nothing is perfect, however, from the bottom of my heart, this is a phenomenal treatment center compared to the many others out there. On the positive side, unlike many ED treatment centers, Backcountry Wellness takes both a very family-based and individualized approach towards recovery. They do not utilize the usual one-size-fits all approach and instead base important decisions and actions off the individual's personal strengths, weaknesses and abilities which is something that is incredibly notable and valuable in the process of recovery due to the fact that once again, eating disorders often have co-occurring issues (AKA comorbidities) such as anxiety, depression and other things. In general, most time spent at Backcountry Wellness is spent on different forms of group therapy, including but not limited to: ACT, DBT, CBT and other topics that address struggles that one with an eating disorder may experience. BCW makes therapy enjoyable by not only offering fun forms of therapy such as yoga, baking and art therapy, but also allowing individuals to connect with peers by openly discussing their true thoughts and commonly shared experiences. Additionally, they do meals/snacks exposures. Most, key word MOST staff at Backcountry are incredible at what they do. From my personal experience, almost all of the staff are truly passionate people about what they do. They aren't just working here for the money, they do genuinely care about mental health and the wellbeing of all clients, something that is crucial, especially in the field of healthcare. To all the BCW staff, especially Zana, Joanna, Stella, Taylor, Edilys, Stephanie, Roxanne, Angelica and both Lauren's, thank you so so much. My progress not only with my ED but just mental health in general could not have been achieved without you guys. Thank you for showing up each and everyday and being there for me at both my best, and my worst. They are professional, yet are also people who you can casually strike up a conversation and be yourself around and this applies for both parents and clients. At BCW, each client receives the following: a family therapist, individual therapist, and dietitian. In Res, depending on the client, you get to go on outings (aquarium, arcade etc) once a week, baking once a week and yoga around three times a week which is absolutely amazing. On the contrary, one of the downsides to BCW is that they are understaffed. Depending on if you are in Residential or PHP/IOP, nine times out of ten, there is a significant client to care coach ratio. Clinicians also spend regular time with clients, which is great, however, the fact is that there are around 7-13 clients who are all different age ranges which can sometimes be a little too much for 1 carecoach, since normally the other one is busy with another task and a few clinical staff to effectively manage. Additionally, the overall vibe of the group heavily depended on which staff was there which in my opinion, was very bittersweet. Over all, in my personal experience, Backcountry is a great facility for adolescents seeking support for ED recovery. I am incredibly grateful to have met so many great people, both staff and clients. It simply wouldn't have been possible without them! Community and a sense of belonging is something that is very much needed when in such a vulnerable situation and it has helped me become such a better version of myself:) Even though I am still receiving support here, thank you so much Backcountry.

Wow. Literally my second home. I never thought I’d be crying and not wanting to leave a residential. When I first got there, no one was shy or had a filter (in a good way). Everyone was like “this place does something to you” and I thought they ment that I’m a bad way but no. Not only does it help you w your ed and mental health, etc, but it brings the real you out. It was the most me I’ve felt in a long time. I felt my true personality come out and never once was I judged. I came home happier and more me and just simply amazed by how much my personality has shown. Not only the other kids did I LOVE, but staff. There were staff there who would go out of their way to help me and give me advice to something totally unrelated and I really appreciate it (Sam P). All the staff were there to do their jobs and help me (some better than others but still). They always showed up to work to one, be a care coach, but also just be a friend. Some of the best care coach’s were able to not just be a care coach but also act as a friend you can laugh with (while still following rules and making sure everyone is ok). Such as Liz, Taylor and Roxanne. They helped make the place way less scary. Time also goes fast there. Every day you have a set schedule which I find SO helpful and still use today when I’m home. You will also, over your time there earn exposures and outings. Never once did I not enjoy an outing. The staff and your team will also help plan exposures for you. I will NEVER forget the time the nurse Zana (she’s a queen) took me and 2 other clients out to eat. Or the one time Reuby and Stella took a few of us to the diner. They wanna set you up for success and I feel that they did with me. One little problem though, and I say little becuase I know they are working on it. Is that they are understaffed. Through out my time there were many instances where I wanted to grab smt or needed smt but there “wasn’t enough care coaches”. Also though, in my time I had seen many more people interviewing and many people getting hired and trained. I also wanna thank Emma, Julie and Rebuy. Me and Emma started on the same day but somehow I didn’t even know she was new. She knew exactly what she was doing and was amazing at her job. And Angelica, she’s like the care coach Mom. The sweetest and kindest person you’ll meet. Always bringing new fidgets in or doing people’s laundry. She runs the best school times! Chase bronfman also needs to make appearances more. Even though everyone’s treatment is different and requires different things, from what I’ve seen, BCW can help you with basically any of your needs. But overall, Im in IOP now and I wanna thank BCW for all they have done. I’m not nearly done w my journey but I’m so grateful for everything they’ve helped me accomplish so far. It was at BCW that be and my best friends, siblings, found what we wanted to do with our life. Open a residential to help others. I’ve always wanted to be a therapist and this fits right in!

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Clinical Services

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Backcountry Wellness has been an absolute blessing for our family. When our daughter was struggling with her eating disorder, we felt lost, overwhelmed, and at times hopeless. From the moment we connected with BCW, everything changed. The staff and team they’ve built are EXCEPTIONAL, caring, professional, and deeply committed to their work. The program is incredibly well thought out, with the right balance of structure, compassion, and expertise. They not only supported our daughter but also guided us as a family through one of the hardest times of our lives. The difference this program made is priceless. I can wholeheartedly recommend BCW to any family in need.

I have a lot of mixed emotions about Backcountry Wellness. I attended within the past year, for a short period of time. (not sharing exactly when, for privacy). The actual treatment helped me a lot. My therapist was so sweet and supportive and helped me overcome so much. Family therapy was also extremely helpful. The meal plan also taught me how to build balanced meals, which I’ve carried into my recovery. You could earn family meals and snacks and the house itself in Greenwich is very nice. Most importantly, some of the staff truly made a difference. Chef Lauren, Taylor, Roxanne, Edylys, Bri, Stephanie, and Zana gave me advice and support that I’ll never forget. They were kind, compassionate, and honestly got me through some of the hardest moments. I will forever grateful for them. Schooling was also good. Our teachers, one of witch being Nicole, communicated with our schools and helped me get work done. I was never stressed about academics during my recovery process witch was incredibly helpful. Now to the negative, BCW is extremely understaffed and overworks the care coaches. There were only two care coaches for the whole group- one would have to leave to cook meals, leaving only one person to support everyone else. The care coaches always seemed stressed. The only one to blame for that is managment. I recently heard they were adding MORE beds, converting a med office to a bedroom. I do feel as if the whole "family owned, we care about everyones individual needs" isnt completely true. As I beielve the main focus is money. A lot of the staff were straight out of college trying to become therapists, with very little training. I felt like there guini pig. Some were helpful, but others seemed uncomfortable, or didnt know how to support us. Alexis in particular stood out—in my experience, she was never there, and when she was, she seemed angry and like she hated both us and her job. The quality of your day depended way too much on which staff were on shift, which is not okay at all for people in such a vulnerable situation. Meals were another stressful part of treatment. Instead of eating with us and modeling normal eating, staff would sit there typing into Zoom chats to log behaviors. I understand monitoring is part of treatment, but it felt invasive and tense—especially when I once peeked at the chat and saw things like “LOL,” “OMG,” and “haha I saw her do that yesterday.” It made the whole thing feel unprofessional and more like gossip than support. BCW was my first treatment center and I do think it is MUCH better than other treatment centers iv seen online. I am genuinly grateful for my time there. I will always appreciate the therapy I received at BCW, and the staff who truly cared and impacted my recovery. But I dont think i would of acheived recovery there, if i didnt go into it willing and ready to say goodbye to ed. I think there needs to be more staff, more support and more proffesionalism at BCW. Until then, BCW will stay a mix of very helpful therapy and poor management.

BCW changed my son's life in amazing ways, and for that I will be forever grateful. The staff's incredible support and the community you foster in the program has helped him be a stronger version of himself. It both challenged him and nurtured him. BCW created a safe space and opportunities for him to learn about about himself and the world around him. And this experience has inspired him to use what he's learned to help others while continuing to grow himself. You have given him a tremendous gift. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Before I further divulge into the specifics of BCW, I want to recognize and acknowledge that everyone’s experiences are different, and I can fully understand the rationale behind some of these negative comments. Going through eating disorder recovery can be one of the hardest obstacles to overcome in some people’s lives, and there are so many points where you’re frustrated at others, or maybe just the process itself. It can feel daunting. I hope this review helps all kids in the now or in the future who may enter either the IOP, PHP, or Residential program at BCW. Just know that recovery isn’t linear, and that even on a bad day- it’s just a bad day and not a bad life. After all, progression is the goal, not perfection. Day to day at the Residential, various forms of therapy (ACT, DBT, CBT, etc.) along with a range of other topics pertaining to struggles one might have when confronting their eating disorder are to be expected. Based on my personal experience, the clinicians were very easy to talk to and incredibly open minded. They are able to challenge their clients, always asking the tough questions to make the clients think deeper and ultimately, gain a better understanding of themselves. Furthermore, I was fortunate enough to have a group of incredible kids in my milieu that offered alternative perspectives and help me grow and develop exponentially as an individual. The small program sizes can really make one feel much more supported and that your needs are always going to be prioritized within your clinical team. I also believe that BCW stands out from other eating disorder treatment facilities in that they take a family based approach, most notably utilizing FBT and IFS. Research has concluded that this is by far the most effective treatment technique to use when dealing with eating disorders. Additionally, the fluidity and flexibility of the treatment plans paves the way for a customizable treatment approach that is tailored to the needs of the individual, rather than a one-size fits all approach that other eating disorder treatment facilities may follow. Initially, when I found out I was going to be transferred to the BCW Residential program, I was terrified. The mere thought of constantly being in a food-focused environment and the inability to see my friends or even parents was extremely anxiety inducing. However, now out of the Residential program and currently in their IOP program, I can confidently say that this has been a truly life changing experience in such a positive way. It would have been an impossibility to recover without going through this extensive yet necessary recovery process. I became a more emotionally intelligent, kind, compassionate, thoughtful, aware, and fulfilled person. I found things within me that transcended food or exercise, whether it be core values I can always live with or the ability to connect with others on a deeper level. I cannot express enough gratitude to the BCW people (clinicians, care coaches, educational staff, and leadership staff). Most importantly, I want to thank all the amazing kids I was able to meet at BCW. I hope this review helps, and comment below if you agree or disagree with my thoughts and opinions.

There are not enough words (or tissues) to fully express how deeply grateful we are to Backcountry Wellness. During the most painful and uncertain time in our lives, they were there, not just as professionals, but as people who genuinely cared. When everything felt overwhelming, they were a steady, compassionate presence. No matter the day or time, someone was always there to listen, guide, and offer support. When we had to make the heartbreaking decision that our daughter needed residential care, we were filled with fear, grief, and so many questions. BCW met us in that moment with such empathy and reassurance. They didn’t just help us through the process—they walked beside us every step of the way. Most importantly, we could breathe knowing our daughter was safe, supported, and surrounded by people who genuinely cared. The facility itself is beautiful—warm, calm, and thoughtfully maintained. The bedrooms are warm, comfortable, and personalized, helping clients feel more at home during a time that can be especially overwhelming. There’s a sense of home and dignity in every detail. Our daughter found comfort in things like yoga and art therapy, and her group even started a garden together. When she was ready, she helped in the kitchen—small moments that brought her joy and a sense of connection during her healing. The meals were nourishing and thoughtfully planned and prepared, not just physically but emotionally—made with intention, care, and variety. And the staff... we will never forget them. Dr. B met with us on Memorial Day—because when your child is in crisis, there are no days off. The therapists were incredibly kind and skilled. The dietitians were patient and informative. The care coaches were the quiet heroes, connecting with kids in authentic and positive ways. The chef brought comfort in every meal. Each person at BCW made a lasting impact on our daughter and us as a family. As parents, we were included and supported throughout the process. We were taught about FBT and eating disorders in ways that were empowering, not overwhelming. We received guidance on meals, and we had weekly support groups that provided a space for us to breathe, learn, and heal. Backcountry Wellness isn’t just a treatment center—it’s a place of hope, healing, and heart. It changed our lives. It helped bring our daughter back to herself. It will always hold a place in our hearts.

Backcountry wellness is an extremely unique place. Of course, I don’t mean that in a bad way! This place literally saved my life. Before I got into BCW, I was in a horrific place. They took me in and cared for me in a supportive, caring, and safe environment. I have NEVER met kinder, funnier, and more supportive people ( staff & clients). Shout out to Zana, Roxanna, Rebecca, Angelica,Chef Lauren, Katherine, Jackie, and Taylor. They supported me through hard meals, horrid body image days, and even on my good days. I’ve been through the residential twice, three times in PHP and IOP twice, Not once did they give up on me! They supported my parents and my whole family I am extremely grateful for that. BCW allowed me to get my personality, help me laugh again, and get my life back. They gave me skills to help me combat ED thoughts and urges. The program also gave me some of the greatest, most supportive friends. I am forever thankful for everyone and especially all of my “milieu. “ For every person who is reading this thinking about going to BCW or is in BCW now remember you are in control of your recovery. There is so much more than being occupied by food, body, and calories. I can’t believe how much my life changed for the better in this past year. Thank you to all the staff and friends I met 💕 YOU HAVE TO NOURISH TO FLOURISH!!!!

Backcountry is a beacon of hope and healing! Our experience with this treatment facility was nothing short of life-changing for our son and, frankly, for our entire family. From the moment we entrusted our son to their care, the team at Backcountry embraced us with open arms. They were nothing short of amazing, becoming like an extended family to all of us. Navigating this challenging time felt impossible at times, but the unwavering support and dedication of the Backcountry team were our constant anchors. Anything we needed, at any moment, they were there. Whether it was a question, a concern, or simply needing reassurance, their responsiveness and genuine care were truly remarkable. We felt heard, understood, and supported every step of the way. When it was time for our son to transition home, it was a bittersweet moment. Saying goodbye to the incredible staff who had become such a vital part of his healing journey was difficult for him, a testament to the profound connections he forged there. I truly believe that without the help of Backcountry, we would still be struggling to help our son. Instead, he is now thriving! We have witnessed such positive growth and transformation, and we are eternally grateful for the guidance and expertise of the entire Backcountry team. Choosing a treatment facility for your child is one of the most difficult decisions a parent can make. From the bottom of our hearts, we can wholeheartedly say: THIS is the place you want to choose. Backcountry provides not just treatment, but a truly caring and supportive environment where healing and growth flourish. Thank you, Backcountry, for giving our son his life back and for becoming such an important part of our lives.

The hardest thing we have ever had to do is drop off our daughter at BCW. We could not have asked for a more caring group of professionals that took care of her and guided her in learning about herself and her brought her back to health. BCW helped our whole family. We will always be grateful for the kind and caring individuals that worked with our daughter and with us to support us in such a difficult time. From the first day through all the trials, transitions and triumphs, they are there to guide and support. I could not imagine where we would have been without BCW. I would highly recommend this program to anyone struggling with eating disorders.
