About Charles Cannon Memorial Hospital

Charles Cannon Memorial Hospital is a multidisciplinary hospital in Linville, North Carolina. They feature departments like an emergency room and a lab, but they also have an outpatient behavioral health clinic. At this clinic, they offer individualized treatment for any behavioral health needs like drug and alcohol addiction and mental health disorders. They have a sliding scale for fees, so you can get help without worrying if you can afford it.

For the most part the treatment here is what you would expect from behavioral health care. They have individual therapy to help you understand more about yourself and your addiction in a way that empowers your recovery. They also have family therapy to help you rebuild relationships with your family and bring you together as a team working toward your recovery. But what’s unlike most behavioral health centers is that they help kids here as well as adults.

This clinic is part of the UNC Health Appalachian network, so they can coordinate your addiction treatment with your other medical care. They have inpatient behavioral health; however this moved to their new facility, the Appalachian Regional Behavioral Health Hospital. Your team here can refer you to the inpatient center if that’s a better fit for you.

While some clients here have complaints about policies and administration like the wait time for appointments, there are also many patients who say that the staff here is knowledgeable and helpful, especially after the staff has had time to get to know them.

We checked into Emergency at 7:35 Pm. My wife in severe abominable pain. After about 20 minutes we finally got to triage. For one hour we sat in an empty room, no nurse, Doctor, janitor nor mouse even opened the door to see how the patient was doing. When I checked with the nurse station, I was informed it is busy .My opinion, a poor excuse for bad service. 15 minutes later no one has still come by to even see if all was OK NO ONE. and my wife was in excruciating pain. So I went back out and, with a rather terse voice and again questioned their service now an hour and 15 minutes. I was told we are busy and if I did not like it she would call the hospital police she tersely asked if I wanted that and I said yes, anything to get a little service. 5 minutes later the first Dr. Came in with an attitude. They may, at times, have good service but, not this time. A zero stars is not low enough fir this incident.

Dr. Coco was amazing and the whole team (specially Larry i think was his name, i m not sure because i was nearly unconscious for the pain) were amazing. Super polite and thoughtful and put my dislocated elbow back in place very fast considering the circumstances. I m very grateful to them

I had great service at the time I was a patient here with Dr. Ellis, who has since retired. Besides this, I would not recommend this place at all. There is no absolutely no transparency with their billing system despite numerous phone calls and conversations in person during the time I received services here.I have changed my address in their system several times, set up a payment plan, paid off all of my debts to them (or so I thought) and still have bills sent to collections after years of receiving services here. Please beware.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Updating a previous review: This location has seriously dropped off in quality after being acquired by UNC Health. Outpatient BH seems to be hemorrhaging providers and after my final and last visit, it's not a surprise. I was not allowed to switch my doctor who was a terrible fit, and I was pressured into signing a release of information after initially declining to do so. I was treated as if I was behaving strangely and suspiciously for not signing it, and later had go to go through a process of phone calls that was more difficult than it should have been to withdraw it. I was questioned as to why I didn't want to sign and why I wanted to withdraw it--I'm sorry, but that's nobody's business but mine. If I don't want to share info, then that should have been the end of it. Your staff should not pry. VERY unethical, and sad to see. I certainly hope inpatient BH hasn't dropped in quality like this too, I'd feel very bad for the poor folks in there if it has. Assigned a new doctor who immediately took my actually useful medicine from me because he insisted it was “too risky” for me to take them because of a reaction I had to a completely unrelated medicine three years ago and because my blood pressure was slightly high that day. Wasted hours of my day getting up here only to be taken off of medicine I actually need to function properly. I have been on this medicine for four years without ANY issues and have been cleared by three different doctors over those years to continue taking it. But now all of a sudden it’s too “risky”? Doctor wouldn’t listen to anything I had to say, and then started grasping at straws for weak reasons not to continue prescribing it to me such as missing a refill. He additionally came off as condescending and paternalistic. Needless to say, I will be finding another provider. I am still trying, in fact. This was one of the few good providers in NC - not anymore. I can no longer get the care I need here that I need to live a productive life.

I went in with chronic insomnia. Lost control of my dad just of system after not sleeping for more than 11 days. The doctor came in for five minutes and told me that he was discharging me that this was chronic insomnia and he doesn’t deal with it. Said he could give me something to go to sleep, but I need to go home and deal with my regular physician. He didn’t even have the common decency to ask me any questions of what was wrong with me or what I had been through. Didn’t offer a sleep study. Was very rude to me and my husband. Wouldn’t talk to us for more than a minute or answer any questions. His name was doctor. Douglas Shields. People have been known to kill their self for not sleeping. He is very unprofessional. I wouldn’t take my worst enemy here.
