About Family Insight

Family Insight in Richmond, Virginia is a community care clinic that works with adults, adolescents, and families who have been impacted by substance use and/or mental health challenges. They offer a continuum of services through their outpatient programs so you’ll have access to both evidence-based therapies and holistic approaches to care.

One thing I noticed is that the clinic has a program for problem gambling, which can be helpful because many people who struggle with substance use are also vulnerable to unhealthy gambling. The “responsibility without blame” framework is a unique and useful way to address behaviors that are disrupting your life.

The team here leads with compassion, but they turn to evidence based therapies to help you manage your substance use struggles and co-occurring disorders. Group therapy, assessments and evaluations, and substance use education are just some of the services that will help set your foundation for recovery. The clinic also engages in regular and random urine testing and breathalyzer screenings. Many former have said this type of service has helped strengthen their commitment to recovery.

I also appreciate that their group counseling sessions target relevant topics in recovery so you can learn things to help improve your life. Among the topics covered are trauma recovery, anger management, life skills development, and even parenting skills development.

The Richmond location is one of several clinics throughout the commonwealth that are operated by Family Insight. The clinic itself is located in a suburban community just outside of Richmond and sits south of Henrico and west of Lakeside. This strategic location makes it easier for individuals throughout the surrounding area to receive quality care without actually having to travel to downtown Richmond.

Currently looking for a new therapist. The one they connected me with was more interested in controlling her child than paying attention to me and what I was saying. You could hear her baby In the background and we had to keep stopping so she could catch him. It was pretty unprofessional and didn't make me feel heard. I understand having a small child but if you're working you need to figure something out.

I am not sire how good there specialists are, but this place has a very shady billing department. They overcharged my insurance is such way that what we had to pay with insurance was more than what we could pay without having insurance ($90 per the docs they gave me to sign). Of course I found that out 2 months after we started the treatment. I made all payments and a year later I start receiving new bills...No one takes responsibility to explain what these bills are for. I called multiple times and sent multiple emails, but keep on getting the bills without any explanation or prove they are legitimate.

Accepted Insurance

Family Insight works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you enroll in drug rehab in Virginia, a treatment plan is designed by professional staff in order to help you overcome drug addiction and modify addictive behaviors. This may include evidence-based treatments, group and individual therapy, and relapse prevention.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I absolutely LOVE my therapist But billing is crazy they used to charge me weekly and then they switched to monthly without telling me there was an accruing Amount 2 times now I’ve had a bill that was over $400 try to be billed all at once on my card. It also doesn’t make sense because they will tell me my card is declining when they tried to take the auto pay again with no notice or phone calls and then use the same card to take the payment when I call. We also weren’t notified that my therapist was out of network until 3 visits in If it weren’t for how wonderful my therapist is I would have switched practices a long time ago

Family Insight debited my credit card without my permission for a balance and left me in a financial bind with alot of overdraft fees! In response to the owner, did you notify me that you were deducting my card without permission. I was working with Angel Gonzales on setting up a payment arrangement and, you took it upon yourself to fraudulently take money without consent. So, there is your 90 day whatever... NOTIFY FOLKS BEFORE YOU STEAL MONEY

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
The client’s card was charged after accruing a balance that exceeded 90 days. Our office made multiple attempts via telephone to contact this client to collect payment. The card on file was charged as a last resort due to the outstanding balance of co-pays. It is always our preference to set up a payment plan with our clients.

The therapist my daughter saw was more interested in talking about her trauma than my daughter's issues. My FSA is frozen because they refuse to send me itemized bills for her treatment. The chick who I was talking to is now ghosting me. I can't believe this place is accredited. I'll be reporting them shortly.

Genevieve, the lady you first talk to on the phone, is incredibly rude and condescending. I decided not to book an appointment with a therapist there simply because of her and the way she portrayed the business.

As of FEBRUARY 14, 2023 Family Insight has 0 psychiatrists. Yes, that's right, they have ABSOLUTELY NO providers. Worse still, they failed to inform that they lost their last provider, allowing for people to run out of their medication. For some people, that means they have to restart their therapy solutions, others it causes withdrawal, and finally it causes others to even potentially lose their jobs. They started hemorrhaging providers late 2022, switching patients between available providers. This worked, but still didn't provide stability, and with only promises of other providers coming shortly. They never informed their patients a new provider never came, they instead let appointments come and go, and wouldn't answer the phone. This is beyond negligent. This organization is atrocious, and it's unbelievable how little they think of their patients to not inform them of not having providers. The reviews going back to at least a year shows how horrendous this organization is, I have no idea how the board has not investigated this company at this point. Avoid this place at all costs.

The billing Dept is a nightmare! For over 2 yrs now I have been trying to get bills correct and they will not follow BC&BS instructions even during calls when insurance walks them thru the process. You need a therapist to deal with everything after talking to the billing Dept
