About Gateway – Boy’s Recovery Center

If you’ve got a teenage son or a nephew who’s involved with drugs or alcohol, Gateway’s Boy’s Recovery Center in Jacksonville, Florida, is a safe place to land for help. They’ve been around since 1978, and the Wally Green Recovery Campus is close to the Flossie Brunson Eastside Park.

It’s a residential program built specifically for boys ages 13 through 17 who need more structure than outpatient care can give. The campus is fully supervised 24/7, so parents know their kids are being looked after while also getting real help for substance use and behavioral health issues.

What Treatment Actually Looks Like

The care here isn’t cookie cutter. Each boy gets an individualized plan that might include things like cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing and group counseling. Daily therapy is also a big part of the process, which I love, because healing relationships at home can make or break recovery.

On top of that, they mix in life skills classes and relapse prevention so the kids walk away with tools they can actually use once they’re back in school or the community. I like that it feels focused on the whole kid and not just the drug use.

It’s also nifty that they have services for kids who aren’t proficient in English. There’s also assistance if your hearing is impaired.

A Supportive Setting For Growth

The campus itself feels more like a school than a hospital. There are classrooms so kids can keep up with academics, outdoor areas for recreation and shared living spaces with round-the-clock staff. Medicaid and most major insurance plans are accepted here too. And they even help families with billing or payment plans if needed.

From what families say, the staff are both equal parts tough and compassionate. But they’re the kind of people who hold kids accountable. They give the kids they work with the patience and support they desperately need.

I am so grateful for Gateway, and the amazing staff there. From the staff at detox, to residential llrehab, down to the front desk & providers for out-patient, they are all an amazing part of my recovery. I started my journey almost 5 years ago at Gateway detox and if it wasn't for programs like what Gateway offers, I wouldn't be here today to speak about it. I will forever be grateful for what this facility has done for me, and taught me. I credit a lot of my sobriety to Gateway, for teaching me the skills I needed to lead and maintain a healthy, sober, productive lifestyle and how to love myself. One day at a time, sometimes one hour, one minute, one second. If you are struggling with addiction and do not know where to turn, by all means call Gateway. I couldn't provide a better alternative.. Gateway is where it's at. Detox will make sure you're comfortable during detox by using a MAT treatment plan that you and the doctor have discussed in depth and determined the right plan for you. Once you're released they continuously provide you the support you need. Do yourself a favor and call today, what's holding you back ?

I was a patient here for 98 days. The stay was nice and my counselor Patrick was fantastic. However the staff while some are friendly are highly undereducated and should not hold their positions. It’s also very much based on how much they like you. Favoritism is huge. One of the guys I don’t even know what his title is but he’s always in the kitchen and preys on the female residents giving them money and everything. All they care about is funding so they force you to do so so so many Aa/Na meetings it’s a joke. You don’t get much free time. They have a sober living to go to but it’s a joke too. Every employee there does not hold their positions credentials it really takes to be there. No offense but everyone is of color they don’t employee barely any whites or Mexican and if you’re white best bet you ain’t getting no special treatment. Again all they care about is funding. You just completed intense outpatient being a resident at Gateway then you go to alumni house they expect you to do a ton of meetings and go to outpatient 3 times a week. That super unrealistic. That’s because they still expect you to pay rent and if you don’t it builds up. These people are under qualified extremely. They have a program that will pay your rent but only if you’re killing urself to meet their expectations. This was 6mnths a waste of my life. If you can go any where else I would not suggest this place. These people need to be exposed. Definitely do not go to the Alumni House. Oh and if you get food stamps they’ll take that without telling you. And once you leave Gateway and go to Alumni House they feed you once a day and they still take your food stamps. I had to lock my card in order to be able to survive on my own food purchases. They are better places to go in Florida. Gateway and the detox is a safe place but be prepared to have programming sourced down your throat all day everyday. Thanks for a whole lot of stress, prejudice, and racism towards white peoples. I have reported this places. The only reason I don’t push to have it shut down and get others on board is because it does save people that are struggling. Oh and they know about the big dude that works in the kitchen that takes advantage of the female residents and he even lives on site and they allow him to continue to be there and work there. Joke. All about money.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

The first step of the recovery process involves the removal of all drugs and alcohol from your system while under 24/7 medical supervision. Known as a medically assisted detox, you are closely monitored by medical staff who can provide medications, if necessary, to help alleviate any potential withdrawal symptoms. Medical detox is usually followed by a period of inpatient addiction treatment.

Outpatient rehabs encompass multiple levels of care to facilitate clients' progress through their recovery journey. Clients who are stepping down from inpatient treatment may require intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment, which involves more frequent and substantive therapeutic interventions than does standard outpatient care. Outpatient centers typically provide extensive addiction counseling, including individual, group, and family therapy. Medication assisted treatment programs (MAT) and recovery-focused life skills training are also common in outpatient care.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Florida provides quality treatment to help individuals overcome dependency related to a wide range of addictive substances. Programs address both the physical and mental aspects of addiction in order to help you make a full recovery.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

In Florida, substance abuse treatment focuses on treating mental health and substance use disorders concurrently to improve recovery outcomes and overall health. Levels of care include medical detox, outpatient, residential treatment, and intensive outpatient programs. Clinicians utilize evidence-based therapies such as dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) or medication-assisted treatment, group therapy, and skills training activities. This comprehensive approach to treatment helps to ensure sustained recovery.

Programs

Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.

Clinical Services

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Therapists who apply cognitive behavioral therapy in Florida believe patient thoughts and behaviors are closely linked. They use this treatment method to help clients change their thought patterns so they can also change behaviors and break free from substance abuse.

As a short term therapeutic method, motivational interviewing in Florida requires only a couple of sessions. During these sessions, you'll have the opportunity to talk about your circumstances and any discrepancies between your current situation and future goals. You'll then decide for yourself what changes you want to make.
