About Hickey House

The Hickey House is located in the serene North Georgia mountains of Helen, Georgia. They are a private and long term residential treatment center dedicated to helping men overcome drug and alcohol addiction.
This intimate facility has offered a structured and supportive environment that blends 12 step principles with real life challenges to foster lasting recovery for over 20 years. Nestled near the Chattahoochee River, the program emphasizes holistic healing by addressing psychological, spiritual and physical health.

A Supportive Environment

Individualized treatment plans are provided and include individual and group therapy that focuses on addictions like alcoholism and opioid dependency. A unique requirement is that clients secure employment during treatment. This helps to promote life skills like time management and responsibility while balancing recovery.
The program incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy and 12 step facilitation. You will have access to both in house groups and off site Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
Clients will be able to attend off site meetings through transportation that is provided. Residents live in multiple homes within a small radius. This helps foster a tight knit community of accountability.

Recreational Opportunities For Healing

I like that the facility offers recreational opportunities that include hiking, kayaking, volleyball and fishing. They leverage Helen’s natural surroundings to support wellness. Clients will benefit from finding new ways to reduce their stress without resorting to substance use.
Hickey House receives mostly positive reviews averaging about 4.1 stars out of five. Most reviewers praise the facility for helping them to put their life back together.

This program literally saved my life from a long road of drug and alcohol abuse. I had a rough start due to my inability to accept the true issues associated with addiction. This was in the mid-90s where the Hickey House offered me the last chance to find true recovery. Tom and Eliane were like 2nd parents in a time when addiction had kicked my butt, but with their loving and amazing ability to get at the root of addiction in a strong spiritual and professional manner. Thank GOD every day for this program and staff. I completed then a 2 year program and I can proudly attest to the effectiveness of their humanistic approach to living without drugs and alcohol. I've been sober and clean for over 20 years. THANK YOU HICKEY HOUSE!!

My stay at the hickey house was awesome! A very down to earth and in tune approach to recovery that gave me the chance I desperately needed to rebuild myself in an environment that was both nurturing and structured with strong basis on AA traditions and principles. The house has a great reputation in the local community and is involved in many different surrounding outside AA meetings . The part I liked most about it was the personal and accessible level staff and residents communicate . My comfort level was through the roof ,which in return allowed me to thrive in my recovery . I don't see a better place available for a person to get the tools to get sober and remain sober. I'd most definitely recommend this place to anyone who IS SERIOUS about giving their selves a chance at happiness in sobriety

I had a highly disappointing experience at Hickey House Sober Living and would not recommend it to anyone seeking a supportive environment for recovery. The living conditions are subpar, with issues like leaking ceilings during rain, which makes the space feel neglected and uncomfortable. The cost is another major issue—$275 per week for rent plus an additional $30 for food is exorbitant for the quality of the accommodations. The rooms are not worth the price, and the food provided is low-quality, often cheap, bottom-shelf products from Walmart. More concerning is the lack of compassion and support from the staff. After a single relapse—a common challenge in recovery, as addiction is a relapsing disorder—I was immediately reported to my probation officer without any opportunity to seek alternative support or treatment. This punitive approach led to a probation violation and further consequences, which felt unnecessarily harsh and counterproductive to recovery. The environment at Hickey House fosters drama rather than healing. Staff and residents openly gossip about and mock those who struggle, creating a toxic atmosphere. There’s also a clear "clique" culture—if you’re not part of the favored group, you’re treated differently, which undermines any sense of community or fairness. For those serious about their recovery, I strongly suggest looking elsewhere. Choose a sober living facility with better conditions, fair pricing, and staff who are genuinely passionate about supporting your journey.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Outpatient rehab enables clients to receive addiction treatment while continuing to work and reside at home. Many programs offer evening, night, and weekend services so that clients may receive treatment on their own schedule. Outpatient treatment modalities typically include addiction counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, and/or medication assisted treatment (MAT). Many programs also provide step-down care, including partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), and standard outpatient services, to align with clients' evolving needs.

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

A quality drug rehab in Georgia can help you overcome addiction. This environment is designed to help you address the complex issues contributing to drug dependence. The goal of treatment is to give you the tools you need to make a full recovery.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.
