About Hoffman Homes for Youth

Hoffman Homes for Youth is a nonprofit center in Littletown, Pennsylvania. Established in 1910, they have helped teens, young adults, and families with substance abuse and behavioral health issues. They have a broad range of inpatient and outpatient programs. There’s also spiritual and academic support.

Clients live at the center throughout their stay in the residential program. Staff are on hand 24 hours a day to provide support and supervision. Clients follow a daily schedule of recovery activities, including therapy (individual, group, and family), specialty groups, skills building, and education. Arts, animal, and equine therapy are also available for creative kids. The center was originally a spiritual site, and spiritual care is part of the program today.

You’ll have access to video games, television, radio, and books. Outdoor recreation can include fishing, soccer, softball, an indoor gym, and ping pong. There’s also group events, including trips to movie theaters, bowling alleys, and the YMCA. Phones are recording equipment, however, are not allowed.

Outpatient care delivers mental health and addiction therapy on a part time basis. You live at home and visit the facility on a regular schedule to participate in therapy groups. The program can last up to six months.

The transitional housing program provides you with additional support as you transition back to your communities. In addition to therapy activities, clients can also receive career coaching, primary medical care, and potential enrollment in the Hoffman Academy. This school is accredited and provides grades 1-12 with academic, social, and technology courses.

This place was great for my son and our family! He experienced success at Hoffman that he hadn t had in several years. I felt the staff was trauma and FASD informed and how that affects brain and behaviors. My son enjoyed the equine therapy and the animal assisted therapy. He is the most stable he has been in years and has gained skills he can use to continue that success. It was a long process to get into Hoffman but in the end it was worth the wait.

My son was sent to HH for suicidal ideations. The entire organization was fully aware of my son's issues. He died by suicide at HH. HH had one job to do... keep my son alive, and they failed miserably. I can't in good conscience recommend this facility.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient rehabs specialize in providing comprehensive care for clients who choose to remain in their homes and communities during treatment. Their services may include transitional support for clients stepping down from intensive inpatient programming. Ambulatory medical detox may be provided for clients at low risk for withdrawal complications. Many programs include evening, night, and weekend services to accommodate clients who are working professionals or caregivers. Addiction counseling and life skills training are common treatment modalities.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Hoffman Homes is proud of the services that it provides to those in need. Staff who are employed must have all their clearances, and multiple references are checked before they are offered employment. We take any allegation of mistreatment seriously and would follow our reporting requirements. Should any alleged mistreatment be confirmed, we would take immediate action. While our hope is that we can provide a positive experience and lasting impact on every youth/young adult that comes into, not everyone who enters our program is ready or willing to follow the program expectations or safety guidelines. This can create safety concerns for staff and youth, and at times, it is determined that our program is not appropriate for them. Hoffman Homes does not have a Group Home; however, we do have a Transitional Living Program. This program is for individuals who are ready to take on the responsibility of having more independence and who are invested in learning the skills necessary to move towards a greater level of independence within the community. Youth/Young adults get out what they invest in this program.

Specific to this post: Hoffman Homes was not informed of any of these concerns during your stay. We are sorry that you felt your experience was a negative one. Had we been made aware of these concerns, we could have addressed them at the time. We are always open to ways we can improve our program/services for individuals, but we must know about the issues to address them.

My child had a suicide attempt WHILE on intensive supervision. TWICE!!! And they didn't notify me until the next afternoon!!! She was not given medical attention until I demanded it (yes I have pictures of her injuries). Awful place to send your child. Not only is their living situation disgusting, the staff are extremely under trained and lack basic mental health knowledge. It's impossible to speak with a supervisor and when you do they are rude and disrespectful and are of no help. My child declined significantly during her time there. I had to pick her up against medical advice because it got to the point where she was no longer physically or emotionally safe there. She left there so much worse than when she started. And I am a real mom giving a real review so I hope whoever is reading this will think twice before choosing this placement.Oh by the way, she was there for 6th months and NEVER saw a horse.

I put one star but if I could put zero I would, like this place is not treatment it made everything so much worse, so any parents looking at this I strongly recommend you do NOT send your child here unless you want them to get worse, possibly loose trust in you and/or gain so much more anxiety due to the strict rules, poorly timed routines and perfection required for everything unless they want to write in the kitchen all day, reflecting on their actions(generally just them forgetting to complete a small part of their chore and other minor things that can be learned) and especially with children who has issues focusing, writing, and other things that can impact that time, they will have to sit longer to finish it because no one will help them. And staff will favorite children who have been there for longer, I get it you like the kid they’re cool but avoiding giving them accountability because you like them is too much. Note that this is not all the staff, their is some that make the stay more tolerable but unfortunately majority of the staff can and will make your stay a living hell. Parents, do NOT send your children here.

I was at Hoffman Homes for about a year and a half. When I arrived at Hoffman Homes, I barely knew myself. I didn't have a family that was good to me, so I didn't know what it felt like to have people care about me and listen to me. Not only did the staff at Hoffman Homes do this, they worked with me through my ups and downs and never judged me when I was at rock bottom. The programs at Hoffman Homes taught me positive ways to deal with stress, anxiety, and communication. They taught me that there is good in this world. The staff at Hoffman Homes put their sweat and tears into making sure us kids were okay. They worked overtime, they dealt with us when we were not ourselves, and they shared wisdom that only people with experience can share. The many many connections I made taught me that I was a person worthy of love, kindness, and respect. They taught me what was healthy and not healthy and without them, I would not be here today. There are connections and life skills I use to this day, almost two years after discharge. I could never thank you all for the dedication you put into us and our treatment. I owe you my life.❤️

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Thank you so much for this beautiful story, Emily. We are so glad Hoffman Homes was able to intercede and create a positive impact in your life. We are truly grateful for residents that take the time to share their journey with us.
