I was discharged yesterday after an abysmal patient experience. Standards of Practice are not followed, corners are constantly cut, the staff is beyond overwhelmed.

I was seen by Dr Natalia Velez in the ER recently. She showed a genuine concern for my well being. She thoroughly explained her diagnosis and treatment plan to me. She consulted two associates regarding my condition and facilitated an "urgent" referral to a specialist. Dr Velez 's care, compassion and skill helped me be at ease during a stressful experience..... I felt well taken care of. I am grateful that Dr Velez was my tending physician in the ER. Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Staff and doctors in the emergency room did a great job taking care of my daughter, however the billing department seems completely incompetent!! When we received our bill they did not apply a cash pay discount (we don’t have insurance). That wasn’t a problem, I called them to get that discount applied and was told I would receive an updated statement. Months went by and I never received an updated statement so I called again. Was told the same thing. STILL never received one. I called again after receiving a final demand bill. The lady then tells me the discount was applied but I didn’t pay it in time so it expired and she would have her supervisor call me to see if they can have it applied again. That didn’t happen either. I called AGAIN because I was afraid of being sent to collections. I was reassured that my account was on freeze so I would not be sent to collections until they got it figured out and someone would call me. Surprise, THEY NEVER CONTACTED ME! One week later and now I have a collections bill!! I just called the hospital again, confused because I was reassured MULTIPLE TIMES this would not happen and they tell me the account was never put on freeze, I can’t get the discount and I’ll have to figure it out with collections! All this time and I have STILL NEVER SPOKE WITH A SUPERVISOR!! Last I was told is that a supervisor will be calling me….I highly doubt that will happen. For reference I have never been late on paying a bill and am happy to pay this bill but this is extremely frustrating and will affect my credit drastically! Thanks Kona Community Hospital.

Cut myself scuba diving to the tune of 10-15 stitches needed per my surgeon friend. 3-4 hour wait times in ER waiting room after an hour and a half decided YouTube and CVS would give a higher level of care instead of bleeding all over the floor here for hours. Some painful cleaning and Internet help succifed to get me to the mainland and seek real care. Got a bill for $250 despite never being seen by anyone, recieving any care and sitting in a waiting room chair only. Criminal. 10 out of 10 rating to the level of apathy in the staff. Would not go unless truly life threatening injury/help needed.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:

Never in my life have I felt so dehumanized. Sitting in the waiting room for hours after having a missed miscarriage and 2 failed attempts with misoprostol scared that I have an infection that can be harmful. I felt like a casket for my dead baby while other people came in for something that isn’t nearly as urgent and got taken back before me. At least come out and reassure me or update me. I understand hospitals get backed up but I am mourning my baby and wanting to just get this over with. I know Kona Community is understaffed, but the biggest problem is their lack of empathy towards a grieving mother.

My experience here was great. The workers, no matter if Dr, nurse, aide, dietary or housekeeping were friendly, fast, empathetic, and truly wanted a best outcome. I have 2 serious complications that could have made a septic wound go really wrong if they were as incompetent as some of these reviews write. Dr's were professional, knowledgeable and a specialist called in for opinion. I know Waimea is the preferred hospital, but I felt I got excellent care here. Less 1 star for age of building and some nonessentials, but the food is very good. So glad they use EPIC so I could link my charts and my hometown docs have access to all that was done.

I would NOT go here if had a cold much less dying. This was a clown circus from the first person we spoke to insisting that if we needed to be inpatient that we should drive 1.5 hours to the OTHER Kona community. What a complete joke from the person in ER who callously checked us in and had every issue with our amazing private insurance and kept asking us about our insurance (like regardless of what was wrong with my dying from cancer friend and his nephrostomy tube infection he was dealing with there)to the nurse whose didn’t see an enlarged dVT in the patient after 5 hours of covering him up with blankets. Their attitude was nothing short of disturbing and I would say that everyone needs to find another line of work because caring for anyone else here was NOT found by one single soul. I can’t imaging the negligence taking place on an hourly basis here. Beware is all I have to say. And a waste of time unless you want clowns to work on you. I was truly horrified. They Literally did an Xray on a patient next door with zero protection for us in the very next bay only divided by curtains. What the heck? Not acceptable unless possibly in a third world country. And maybe during a time of war but guess what - none of those apply here. I would not go here even for a cold.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:

I want to thank the nursing staff and doctors at KCH. From the security guards to the surgeon, everyone was friendly, helpful, and efficient. Yes the wait was long but I would expect that from a busy ED serving such a large area. Once brought to a bed in back the nurse was so kind, tests performed timely, and results presented by the physician. I would have never thought I would need an emergency surgery while on vacation so thank you for making a stressful and scary experience better. I couldn’t have asked for better care than what I experienced.
