I was seen by Dr Natalia Velez in the ER recently. She showed a genuine concern for my well being. She thoroughly explained her diagnosis and treatment plan to me. She consulted two associates regarding my condition and facilitated an "urgent" referral to a specialist. Dr Velez 's care, compassion and skill helped me be at ease during a stressful experience..... I felt well taken care of. I am grateful that Dr Velez was my tending physician in the ER. My experience here was great. The workers, no matter if Dr, nurse, aide, dietary or housekeeping were friendly, fast, empathetic, and truly wanted a best outcome. I have 2 serious complications that could have made a septic wound go really wrong if they were as incompetent as some of these reviews write. Dr's were professional, knowledgeable and a specialist called in for opinion. I know Waimea is the preferred hospital, but I felt I got excellent care here. Less 1 star for age of building and some nonessentials, but the food is very good. So glad they use EPIC so I could link my charts and my hometown docs have access to all that was done.

I initially planned to stay at the Ohana addiction treatment center for just two weeks, with the idea of checking in on how I was feeling during my time there. But honestly, from the fantastic staff to the cozy accommodations, it felt just like home. This place is really ideal for anyone looking to stay sober.

I just completed a 90 day stay at HIR, they only admit up to 8 patients at one time, as such you receive a lot of attention/help. They completely addressed all my issues They guided me thru detox and spent weeks educating me about the effects of my drug of choice. Hands down worth every penny as I am leaving with my life back, they even addressed the family issues that come with using. Thank you HIR.

After battling addiction for over a decade and trying countless programs, I can confidently say that Honu House Hawaii is truly unlike anything else out there. What sets this place apart is its truly holistic and integrative approach — it’s not just talk therapy (which has its place), but a powerful combination of therapies that address the whole person: mind, body, and spirit. For me, the game changer was the incorporation of somatic practices like breathwork. These sessions allowed me to access and release trauma and patterns that years of traditional therapy never quite reached. The team at Honu House creates a safe, supportive, and deeply healing environment where you can discover a truly new way of being and relating to yourself and your addiction. If you’re someone who has started to lose hope after trying everything else — please know there is another way. Honu House is truly transformative, and I am so grateful to have found this sanctuary in Hawaii. It’s not just recovery — it’s healing, growth, and rebirth.

Honu House on the Big Island made a life-changing difference for a loved one, and I can’t say enough about the impact this place had. The setting is absolutely beautiful—peaceful, grounding, and ideal for healing. But what truly sets Honu House apart is the people. Everyone there—from the staff to the therapists—treats clients with genuine kindness, respect, and compassion. The therapeutic approach is comprehensive and deeply effective. It’s clear that the team is not only highly skilled but also truly committed to helping people recover and grow. My loved one came out of their time at Honu House stronger, more centered, and with a renewed sense of hope and purpose. I’m incredibly grateful to this special place. If you or someone you care about is struggling and looking for a path to sobriety, I wholeheartedly recommend Honu House.

I've worked in this field for 18 years and can honestly say that this is the best drug and alcohol rehab I've encountered. John and Nick are very involved, and Eliza is a highly skilled therapist. The house is immaculate, and the culture is healing and the modalities such as breathwork, cold plunge, vitamin IV's, NAD are highly effective. Definitely recommend Honu House Hawaii for Drug and Alcohol rehabilitation.

This was my first visit to a treatment facility, so I do not have anything else to compare it to. However, I was very worried when searching for an inpatient treatment facility what I would be signing up for. I heard negative things from other people's experiences at different treatment centers. After I arrived at HIR and was there for a week, I was pleasantly surprised at the level of care provided. All of the doctors, therapists and staff were great. Sure, there are rules that all treatment centers have to protect patients, but I was fine with the rules applied here - the level of care made up for it. There are typically only 6-7 other patients which means you get the attention, focus and help anytime you need it. You also build a strong bond with everyone. There are plenty of outside activities where you can really enjoy Hawaii as a local not a tourist. As with any treatment center you should have a list of questions and concerns when you call for more information, you will get honest responses to help you make the decision. Just remember, this is recovery treatment, you want the facility with the best doctors and therapists so you can get better. The rest is an added bonus. HIR has all the above.

When the school is open, the general public can use the pool, showers, library, etc.On the morning of May 4th, just as we were planning to take a shower attached to the beach after swimming at Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, we were ordered to leave the beach all at once due to concerns about a tsunami due to a large-scale earthquake on the east side of the volcano. I had stayed in Phalaa the day before and was researching the town, so I immediately remembered this place and decided to go back. The pool is small but clean. The shower has plenty of hot water and is comfortable. Phahala town is located in a high place, so it was really helpful in terms of evacuation.

Nova Luna Center is a mental health day treatment program that empowers people to be their own guides and healers through a process of self-discovery as they address their depression, anxiety, PTSD, eating disorders, and other more serious emotional issues and behaviors. I’m writing this review for the part of me who previously felt terrified to speak up for herself in fear of retaliation. I was a client at Nova Luna from the ages of 15-18 years old, and I am now 21. My mother remains a current client within the program. I felt pressured to stay and was discouraged when I wanted to seek other support. I was given the perception that the program was my only way to heal and that the clinical director was better than any other clinician I could find elsewhere. I felt saddened whenever she spoke poorly about other professionals/programs in the area who others have had positive experiences with. Towards the end of my time at Nova Luna, many of the therapists/clinicians resigned and the clinical director was seeing my mother and I for individual/family therapy as there were no other therapists working within the program. I was not allowed to remain friends with clients who discharged themselves without “graduating,” which saddened me as I built many friendships there. Further, I felt my confidentiality as well as other clients’ confidentiality wasn’t taken seriously compared to how I see my confidentiality being taken now. After an accumulated list of events, I took a leap of faith soon after turning 18 to seek a trauma-informed therapist who I feel safe with. Three years have passed. Since leaving, I have a greater ability to advocate for myself and have grown more than I ever thought possible. I have learned that there are many paths to life and one therapist doesn’t have the power or capacity to be the perfect fit for every client. I have learned that nothing scary will happen if I choose to contact people that I wish to connect with. I have learned that I can bring my thoughts, feelings, and vulnerabilities to therapy and have it be received without an alarming reaction. I have learned that some people may tell me what they believe is best for me, although at the end of the day, it is me who is living my life and I have the ability to choose who witnesses and supports me through whatever phase I’m in. Most importantly, I can confidently identify what a safe therapeutic relationship is and no longer question if I deserve anything less. As a therapist, you leave an imprint on each client that walks through your door. Additionally, you have the power to choose what kind of imprint you wish to have. There were many wonderful moments at Nova Luna and I will forever be grateful for what I have learned there and for the people I met. However, there were also things that needed improvements towards the end of my time within the program that I have been too afraid to share. I wholeheartedly believe that it’s important for everyone to find support they feel is best for them, whether it's at Nova Luna, another program, or working with a therapist in Private Practice. I wish you the absolute best on your journey towards recovery + healing.
