About Lahey Hospital & Medical Center

Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, a member of the Beth Israel Lahey Health System, provides comprehensive medical and behavioral health care for residents of Burlington, Massachusetts, and the greater Boston region. Their behavioral health and substance use treatment programs serve adults 18 years old and older. They accept most commercial insurance and managed care plans, Medicare and Massachusetts Medicaid.

Emergency Crisis Intervention Services

Individuals facing a mental health or addiction crisis can speak with a qualified crisis professional 24 hours a day seven days per week. Their mobile intervention service can also be dispatched to Andover, Lawrence, Methuen and North Andover to meet with individuals at their homes, schools, outpatient clinics, hospitals, nursing homes and aging centers. They can provide emergency psychiatric assessments, intervention and stabilization and make referrals to the appropriate level of care.

Medical Detox and Clinical Stabilization Service

Often people experiencing addiction need medically supervised detox. This is especially true with alcohol, opioid, benzodiazepine and certain stimulant abuse. Lahey Health System offers 24/7 medically supervised detox services that provide physician-led withdrawal using a variety of FDA approved medications and interventions. These provide the stabilization needed to focus on the next step in recovery.

For individuals who require acute treatment for substance use disorder but do not require medical detox, Lahey offers a Clinical Stabilization Service program (CSS). On average individuals stay in the program for 10 to 14 days. They receive treatment that focuses on symptom management through education, aftercare planning, case management, skill building and therapy.

Outpatient Services

Not all individuals with substance use disorder need inpatient treatment. At Lahey they offer a wide variety of services including partial hospitalization programs (PHP), individual and group therapy and medication management. They can also assist individuals with co-occurring disorders such as anxiety, depression, mood disorders and PTSD.

Their outpatient services help individuals create a life without addiction. These programs utilize a variety of talk therapies, skill building programs and relapse prevention support. Because families are also impacted by addiction they offer family therapy and couples counseling services.

Accepted Insurance

Lahey Hospital & Medical Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Inpatient rehab offers robust, hands-on care in a highly structured and supportive environment. The facility provides housing, meals, and round-the-clock supervision, allowing clients to focus exclusively on their recovery. Inpatient treatment typically involves intensive addiction counseling based on CBT, DBT, RBT, motivational interviewing, or other psychotherapeutic approaches. Many inpatient treatment centers also offer life skills training and/or complementary therapies, including meditation, mindfulness, and nutrition counseling.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

Due to various health issues that substance abuse causes, 24-hour clinical care in Massachusetts is often a necessary part of treatment. Individuals may be suffering from infections, illness, or organ damage. Having 24-hour care available ensures that these physical problems are treated along with the psychological effects of addiction. Once individuals complete detox and are medically stable, this intensive level of supervision ends, and the next phase of treatment can begin.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Waiting is a constant on any hospital, but once you're called in you're dealt with efficiently. Related appointments are scheduled on the same day, so they reduce your visits. Staff is professional and accommodating

by far the worst of the worst. if you want to see Americas medical system at its finest just go here. staff NEVER puts the needs of patients first. my father in law went the entire day without eating or receiving pain management because no one could get off their ass. they’re always more than happy to kick family members out who are trying to speak up for their family members and FEED them for the first time in THREE days. And who the hell charges people to park and see their sick family?!?!?! HORRIBLE POLICIES HORRIBLE STAFF.

Had my Surgery at Lahey Hospital and been in the ICU unit for like a week, and the nurses who took care of me are so nice and so compassionate and made me feel so safe and comfortable during my recovery. Big thanks to Adam, Son, sarah and Marry who don’t hesitate to entertained my 2 year old daughter if she’s in my room. Thank you for all your help! You guys are a dream team!

My mom was brought into the ER, later to be moved to the critical care unit(where she passed shortly after). EVERY nurse and doctor involved in the care of my mom, was phenomenal. I don’t have words to express how amazing the team was, not only with her but, also my entire family. They did everything in their power to keep my mom comfortable and at peace. They couldn’t do enough for us, as we spent a day and a half by her bedside. They were constantly offering food, drinks, tissues, pants(to my sister), literally anything we needed. They were extremely consoling throughout the entire process. I couldn’t have asked for better care. I appreciate every nurse and doctor that was involved in caring for my mom during her final days. Thank you ALL so very much! It’s greatly and truly appreciated!!

I would like to express our deep gratitude and admiration for the entire ER team here. Every individual we encountered was exceptionally kind, patient, and gracious—and clearly highly skilled in their roles. The care provided to my 85-year-old mother was not only professional but profoundly compassionate, and we are truly thankful. I cannot recall all names but here goes: Ryan at the front desk, RN Trish, LCSW Annette, NP Brendan, nurses Kerry, Joy, and numerous others whose name I did not learn. Thank you!

I waited over 45 minutes to have staples removed from my chest regarding a procedure that installed a monitor over my left pectoral muscle for a heart condition. I kept checking at the front desk about the delay and they assured me there was someone to attend to my situation . FINALLY, a young woman came, removed the staples and I was free to go home. There was NO legitimate excuse from the nurse, practitioner (???) other than she wasn’t interested in attending to my situation. I was horrified, and think to this day about her complete disregard and ARROGANCE concerning her unprofessional behavior and my well being. Your hospital should be doing a better job with regards to their hiring practices. This person was an embarrassment and should be fired.
