About Lahey Hospital & Medical Center

Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, a member of the Beth Israel Lahey Health System, provides comprehensive medical and behavioral health care for residents of Burlington, Massachusetts, and the greater Boston region. Their behavioral health and substance use treatment programs serve adults 18 years old and older. They accept most commercial insurance and managed care plans, Medicare and Massachusetts Medicaid.

Emergency Crisis Intervention Services

Individuals facing a mental health or addiction crisis can speak with a qualified crisis professional 24 hours a day seven days per week. Their mobile intervention service can also be dispatched to Andover, Lawrence, Methuen and North Andover to meet with individuals at their homes, schools, outpatient clinics, hospitals, nursing homes and aging centers. They can provide emergency psychiatric assessments, intervention and stabilization and make referrals to the appropriate level of care.

Medical Detox and Clinical Stabilization Service

Often people experiencing addiction need medically supervised detox. This is especially true with alcohol, opioid, benzodiazepine and certain stimulant abuse. Lahey Health System offers 24/7 medically supervised detox services that provide physician-led withdrawal using a variety of FDA approved medications and interventions. These provide the stabilization needed to focus on the next step in recovery.

For individuals who require acute treatment for substance use disorder but do not require medical detox, Lahey offers a Clinical Stabilization Service program (CSS). On average individuals stay in the program for 10 to 14 days. They receive treatment that focuses on symptom management through education, aftercare planning, case management, skill building and therapy.

Outpatient Services

Not all individuals with substance use disorder need inpatient treatment. At Lahey they offer a wide variety of services including partial hospitalization programs (PHP), individual and group therapy and medication management. They can also assist individuals with co-occurring disorders such as anxiety, depression, mood disorders and PTSD.

Their outpatient services help individuals create a life without addiction. These programs utilize a variety of talk therapies, skill building programs and relapse prevention support. Because families are also impacted by addiction they offer family therapy and couples counseling services.

I went to Dr. Todd for rheumatology because my PCP advised me to after I got a rash on my face, neck, and arms. Dr. Todd recommended $2,630 worth of labs. I was told by the lab at her building that I needed to go to the main hospital lab because one of the test required hot water. Then I was told over the phone by a person in billing at BIlH Burlington that Harvard Pilgrim denied my claim and the customer service person from Harvard Pilgrim stated the claim was never submitted. When I logged into Harvard Pilgrim it never showed any claim for those labs…

Accepted Insurance

Lahey Hospital & Medical Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Inpatient rehab offers robust, hands-on care in a highly structured and supportive environment. The facility provides housing, meals, and round-the-clock supervision, allowing clients to focus exclusively on their recovery. Inpatient treatment typically involves intensive addiction counseling based on CBT, DBT, RBT, motivational interviewing, or other psychotherapeutic approaches. Many inpatient treatment centers also offer life skills training and/or complementary therapies, including meditation, mindfulness, and nutrition counseling.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

Due to various health issues that substance abuse causes, 24-hour clinical care in Massachusetts is often a necessary part of treatment. Individuals may be suffering from infections, illness, or organ damage. Having 24-hour care available ensures that these physical problems are treated along with the psychological effects of addiction. Once individuals complete detox and are medically stable, this intensive level of supervision ends, and the next phase of treatment can begin.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Waiting is a constant on any hospital, but once you're called in you're dealt with efficiently. Related appointments are scheduled on the same day, so they reduce your visits. Staff is professional and accommodating

I arrived at the emergency room at 3:30 PM with dizziness, lightheadedness, abdominal pain, and extreme exhaustion. I am 13 weeks pregnant and informed the staff that I had been scheduled to receive IV iron out of state due to suspected iron deficiency, but had to return to Massachusetts for school, which is why I came to this hospital for care. Unfortunately, my experience was extremely disappointing. I was not seen by a doctor until 11 PM—over 7 hours later—despite my symptoms and pregnancy. During that entire wait, my vitals were taken only once and blood was drawn. I was later told I was “not anemic,” but when I reviewed my lab results, I noticed no iron panel, ferritin, or vitamin B12 tests were performed—so I don’t understand how that conclusion was made. I did receive an ultrasound and was told everything looked okay with my pregnancy, which was a relief. However, I was never informed ahead of time that the hospital does not administer IV iron, which was the main reason I came in. I feel like I waited 12 hours for nothing and was misled about what services would be provided. Overall, I left feeling exhausted, ignored, and misinformed. Pregnant patients, or anyone in need of specific care, deserve to be told upfront if a hospital can’t provide the treatment they’re seeking. Clearer communication and faster triage would have made a huge difference.

The quality of the food has gone completely down! I remember my last stay and they had great options like tacos and quesadillas, and many more heartly good tasting foods. Now it seems upper management wanted to save money and slashed the kitchens budget. What a Absolute SHAME. I did notice the wifi seemed to be faster and more reliable this stay of 5 days but I much rather have worse wifi and 10x better food. Such a shame because the kitchen staff works so hard and puts all their effort into making the best food they can with the ingredients they are given.

Always efficient and appointments happen on time. All the doctors, NP's, Pa's and nurses are knowledgeable and kind. The absolute best place to go for any health related issue but especially if it is more serious!

Unprofessional, Insensitive, and Downright Inappropriate Care – A Disgrace to Patient Dignity From the moment I was brought into the pre-op room, the lack of basic respect and professionalism was staggering. The first offense occurred when Erin, the RN, barged into the room without knocking while I was exposed—my gown had slipped, and the technician was still placing ECG leads. Instead of immediately acknowledging the intrusion or apologizing, she casually introduced herself and then, when I asked her role, prioritized logging into her computer over answering a simple, reasonable question. At that point, I had no idea if this stranger even belonged in my room—let alone why she felt entitled to walk in unannounced while I was in a vulnerable state. When I pressed for clarity, she argued with me, insisting she had already explained herself (she hadn’t) and gaslighting me by claiming my exposed chest wasn’t actually exposed. Excuse me? I think I know when my own body is on display, and her dismissive attitude was not only unprofessional but downright insulting—**Offense number two.** Her conduct only deteriorated from there. When I dared to ask questions—something any patient has every right to do—she accused me of being "borderline hostile." Let me be clear: Asking for transparency about who is treating me and why is not offensive—it’s basic patient rights. Instead of de-escalating the situation or showing an ounce of empathy, she doubled down, maintaining an argumentative, defensive tone with someone who was anxious, exposed, and about to undergo surgery. **Offense number three.** But the most egregious moment came when I explained that my mother had tragically died just two months prior—a detail I shared to contextualize my distress. Rather than offering condolences or adjusting her approach, Erin launched into a boastful story about her multi-generational trip to Italy with her own mother. The sheer lack of self-awareness was breathtaking. At best, this was tone-deaf and wildly inappropriate timing; at worst, it was deliberately cruel. **Offense number four—and the most unforgivable.** This was not just a series of missteps—it was a complete failure of patient care, dignity, and basic human decency. No patient should ever be subjected to such callous, unprofessional treatment.

I wish I could somehow tell every human I interacted with during my time there but I’m not sure how. If someone reads this they probably won’t remember me. But I would like to say thank you. Thank you to everyone person there. You all made such a difference to me. From janitors to nurses and doctors and therapists and every other single person, thank you. You were kind and caring and helped me get through the toughest moments of my life. I always felt like a person. When I couldn’t talk or breathe or eat or use the bathroom, I still felt seen and cared for. Thank you to each and every one of you. You matter. It may not feel like it as you go to work every day. But you do, you matter a hell of a lot to a lot of people in need. So thank you, from the depths of my soul, thank you.
