About New Oakland Family Center

One thing I like about them is they strive to make care accessible. Seeking co-occurring disorder care can be challenging. They ensure you can quickly get the help you need whenever you’re ready. You’ll benefit from walk-in services and 24/7 crisis stabilization.

Along with co-occurring substance use disorders, their programs address a full spectrum of mental health needs. You can find treatment for anxiety, depression, stress and school problems. They use an integrated approach that addresses all conditions in tandem to promote long term recovery.

With outpatient treatment, you can get the help you need while living at home. You can participate in group, individual, and family therapy to address the underlying causes contributing to your addiction. They target care based on your personal needs, designing an individualized treatment plan with proven interventions tailored to your unique situation.

It’s also great that they use a trauma informed approach. Accounting for trauma in treatment not only teaches you about how past experiences affect you today. It also helps you work through these tough situations and adopt healthy coping skills when triggers arise.

Another standout feature is their multifaceted team. You’ll benefit from empathetic care from certified nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, social workers, counselors and registered dieticians. These professionals deliver the combined experience and guidance to help you overcome challenges in your journey and come out on top.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE!! GET THE HELP ITS WORTH IT!!!❤️❤️❤️ I truly can’t say enough about how much the New Oakland Clarkston location changed my life. I came in during a crisis, and I left feeling stable, hopeful, and genuinely happy. From the moment you walk through the doors, you’re greeted with open arms—there’s no judgment, just compassion, warmth, and professionalism. I was part of the face-to-face program at 28 years old, and everything exceeded my expectations. The group therapy sessions were incredibly powerful and gave me tools I didn’t even realize I was missing. My group leader, Kailee, was with me for the majority of the program and is genuinely one of the most bubbly, kindhearted, and knowledgeable souls I’ve ever met. She created a space that was safe, supportive, and uplifting every single day. Niki, my therapist, is truly amazing—so insightful, attentive, and caring. Dominique, the nurse, is an absolute gem—compassionate, patient, and always there when you need her. And Matt, the psychologist, didn’t waste any time helping me find the right medication and support. He took my concerns seriously and acted quickly, which made a world of difference. The staff here truly care. It doesn’t feel like “treatment”—it feels like a community of people who love what they do and want to help you grow and heal. The food was great every day, the atmosphere was calming and structured, and they even gave us breaks for fresh air, which made a huge difference for my mental health. This place gave me a full toolbox to take with me, and for the first time in a long time, I feel ready. But here’s the truth: you get out what you put in. If you show up, participate, and commit to the process, you will see change. This team will support you every step of the way, but you have to meet them there. What sets New Oakland apart is that their care doesn’t stop when you walk out the door. They set you up with a real plan for continued support—and they actually follow through. I will forever be grateful for the experience I had here. This team helped me find myself again. Thank you, New Oakland Clarkston. You saved me.

I recently was discharged from the PHP Face to Face program. It was an amazing program! I learned a lot of coping skills, and really felt that I was in a safe, non-judgmental facility. I spent most of my time with Kailee. She is EXACTLY what the mental health world needs. She is so kind. She really takes the time to get to know. She challenges you, makes you get a little out of your comfort zone, and shows incredible support. I also had the pleasure of working with Martha and Dr. Harris. Both were so warm and friendly. You can tell they just want to see you feel better. Everyone I encountered was so kind! They never made me feel bad or insecure about being there. Even the front desk ladies were amazing! The one who works check in was always in a great mood, and that helps you settle in and feel comfortable. Overall, I highly recommend New Oakland in Clarkston if you’re in a dark patch. They will help you create an action plan to get you back to your best self! I hope I never hit a spot again where I need PHP again, but it’s great to know there’s such wonderful humans willing to help you. 10 out of 10 experience.

Called to make an appointment today. Whoever the woman is answering the phones is super rude & impatient. I’ve never had an experience like that calling in a mental health place. There’s a lot in the area so I would suggest looking elsewhere.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Traditional outpatient services are the least restrictive means of treatment and may include individual, group, family and medication management focused treatment. These outpatient services are based on the client’s needs and may involve weekly, bi-weekly and/or monthly scheduled sessions.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

The New Oakland FACE to FACE Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) focuses on children, adolescents and adults with emotional, behavioral, and/or chemical abuse problems. It is less intensive and restrictive than the FACE to FACE partial day program, taking place on three non-consecutive days per week and lasting three hours per visit. It is a modified, less restrictive component of the FACE to FACE partial day programs, still featuring group, individual and family therapies that effectively deal with crisis, depression and conflict through the acquisition of social, interpersonal, communication, negotiation and conflict resolution skills. With the New Oakland IOP, an individual continues to live at home and remain engaged in his or her own life, continuing to go to work or school while developing the skills he or she needs with the help and support of the program.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

While many people know it as "day treatment", a partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers treatment during the day and allows you to live at home. PHP treatment typically requires a commitment of at least 20 hours of treatment every week, with a program duration that spans approximately 90 days. While commuting is necessary, some programs offer telehealth options. PHP treatment plans usually include relapse prevention, medication management, and behavioral therapy.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Michigan provides personalized treatment to help individuals break this cycle and regain control of their lives. Treatment methods are used in various levels of care, including inpatient rehab, partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient programs, and standard outpatient treatment.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
military-program thumbnail image

Military Program

Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Both internal and external factors can put stress on a relationship. Couples therapy helps you and your partner work through those stressors and find healthy ways to deal with challenges as they arise.

Cognitive behavioral therapy in Michigan helps participants view challenges more clearly so they can respond to them in healthy ways. During a limited number of structured sessions, clients learn about and practice these changes to effectively address substance use and mental health disorders.

Addiction often involves intense situations and emotions. Dialectical behavior therapy helps you understand and regulate your emotions and better manage the situations that evoke those feelings. You'll receive mindfulness training and stress management training to cope more effectively with difficult emotions.

During motivational interviewing, therapists express empathy, support self efficacy, and develop discrepancies. By using these techniques, therapists help clients reflect on their desires for change and understand why and how they should move forward with those changes.

Group/Individual therapy in the same place is incalculably beneficial for anyone willing to do their part to address their own issues with the help of New Oakland Family Centers’ exceptional staff of therapists and psychiatrists. 10 out of 10 would highly recommend! 👍😍✨

Would not treat my actual condition or take any of my concerns seriously. I saw every psychiatrist and nurse practitioner this office had available and did not receive adequate care at any point, just had them try to prescribe extremely expensive new medications that were inappropriate for my condition and resulted in very unpleasant side effects and I was threatened with legal action for refusing to take medications I knew were harming me. I believe this is a scam.

This place is the worst psychiatric place you can ever go to. I was sent there 2 years ago and the whole experience was completely dehumanizing. The metal detections was outrageous, I got constantly yelled at for doing the most simplest things, and they make you do an IQ test while you’re at your lowest point and having a panic attack on your first day. When acting “bad” they would simply throw you into a sensory deprivation room that was dark and full of foam walls. They also always threatened to call the police if we ever tried to escape. The place also advocated for mental health and when someone mentioned suicide or self harm topics they would shut it down and punish us and say that suicide is illegal. They also diagnosed me with schizophrenia and started treating me for it; I have no signs of schizophrenia. Once they do find your IQ scores they would shame you. You could almost never talk to the individual therapist either I only talked to her 2 times in 2 weeks of my program. Overall, this place is a horrible institution and was super expensive for nothing. I constantly had nightmares about being sent back after my mandatory stay. I hope this place gets shut down!

I went here a couple years ago and it was the worst experience ever. I got dresscoded multiple times, for wearing a dress that didn't hit my knees, which is insane because it's a mental health facility. A staff member yelled at me whenever she was frustrated, and would storm out of the room and throw a tantrum. They would take away fidgets from kids who needed them, and they would yell at me for coloring? I never saw the same therapist twice, which caused for an unstable environment. Kids who were hyperactive were put in timeout and weren't aloud to play outside during break time. I had no information about my discharge date until the day of. A lot of the "therapists" in the outpatient rehab facility were mean and childish. Was the worst experience i have ever had with any mental health professional, don't go there unless you want to end up worse than when you started.

DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE, my son who is 16 was taken here for suicidal ideation, depression and behavioral concerns recommended by the ER @ Beaumont Hospital Troy aka Corewell Health and social workers at the hospital, I drove him on day 1 to complete intake paperwork and arranged for transportation as I have to work, Day 1 seemed like it was going to be good, he came home told me how his day went and said everyone was nice, Day 2, transport arrives to pick him up, he had his water bottle with him and was told to dump it, that's fine, he said he'd chug it...skip to a few hrs later...I get a phone call at work telling me my son is being discharged for saying he's going to chug his water bottle like liquor when he was picked up? I reviewed my Ring Camera...NO SUCH THING WAS SAID, also I was told that he was making fun of trans kids? Excuse me? First off EVERYONE there is there for some kind of mental reason...including trans kids...secondly my son said no such thing, he did not even know that he was discharged from the program, you people said NOTHING to him? Instead of having him speak to a therapist IF he did say something like that you just kick him to the curb when he is SUPPOSED to be there to get HELP? They are liars and just looking to make a quick buck off your child, the psychologist , didn't really have time to spend with me listening to my concerns about my child and spent the whole time (10 minutes) talking about herself and HER child. Yeah, great lady, I dont care about your child, I'm here for MY child because I am a concerned parent. I received no discharge paperwork and I will be filing a complain with the State of Michigan against this place. They are supposed to be there to help people with unacceptable behaviors YET THEY are the ones with unacceptable behaviors.

Utterly horrible. First they scheduled me with someone who was on their very last day and they told me they weren't taking new patients, so they said they would put me back in the system to get a new therapist. Well, after 2 months of waiting i decided to call them back and it turns out they forgot about me entirely. So they set me up with a new therapist and scheduled an appointment, but then when the appointment came the therapist never showed up (telehealth). I called the therapist but their voice mailbox was full so I couldn't even leave a message. This place is a joke and makes people who are struggling in life feel like no one cares about them.

I’d give them a zero if I could. I’ve been waiting over a year fighting with them trying to get my daughter therapy first it was they didn’t have enough therapist, then they just forgot to call, now they lie about calling me and leaving messages when they don’t, and now they don’t wanna give me anything after school and want to interrupt her schooling for therapy. Take your kids somewhere else. This place is a joke.

Discharged with no notice after being a patient for almost 2 1/2 years. I noticed therapists don’t really care if you’re having a bad day and correspond through email. And yes I asked to be discharged in an email but it was pretty obvious the therapist I was seeing couldn’t be bothered to ask why or what was going or did something happen to where I wanted to be discharged, but nope, they didn’t care, most likely happy one less patient to deal with. Never got a return email back and was discharged and after confronting them again through email that I didn’t receive discharge a letter which they are supposed to do and send by mail saying I was discharged, only to get an email weeks to a month later from the therapist claiming they had sent out a discharge letter and that they weren’t taking any new patients. I really could care less if you’re not taking new patients. And you don’t have to lie about saying you sent out a discharge paper when clearly you did not and still haven’t. It takes you weeks to respond to those two emails, let alone take the time to send out a discharge paper. I Absolutely did not receive a single letter and you would think after me sending an email about this, they should have sent “another” discharge letter? Nope. Still haven’t got one. They just patient dump you. And after I was supposedly sent a letter that I was discharged. They never sent my credit back to me that I had on my account, so I had to call for that, which the lady I talked to was nice and apologized which is why I’m giving 2 stars instead of one and because the therapy was good at first, but the lady I spoke with said that a check should have been sent as soon as I was discharged. I really thought this was a good place but clearly, therapist don’t care. It’s all about a paycheck. I spent 2 1/2 years with one therapist, which I was hesitant to do in the first place, and it did go good for a while, only to realize they could care less. After this experience, I will never ever see or talk to a therapist again. Totally ruined any trust I would ever have for a therapist. The mental health system is so broken. Also reading other reviews, looks like it’s a common theme that people don’t receive discharge papers. Also never on time if doing zoom meets. I’ve waited several times 20 mins. I under stand that sometimes this can happen but it happens quite often but the therapist I seen always seem to get right off as soon as our time was up even though they were late! So nevermind that hour or 45 minute session I was supposed to have but insurance was sure charged to for that time!

For Guardians of Adults with Developmental and Mental Disabilities the services I recommend here is outpatient and seeing the Psychiatrist. My Adult Daughter tried the other programs she has sensory issues and it was too fast paced being put in the Adult group she is 23 but developmentally not 23. I'm glad the Director of PHP let us give it a try but it just wasn't the right fit.
