Let me start off by saying that I am highly educated, come from a wonderful family and have an amazing career making well over 6 figures a year. Why is this relevant? Because I know exactly how people who aren't like me are unfortunately degraded and dismissed in mental health facilities. They are treated like worthless trash. Look at all of these horrible reviews but no one pays attention because they are considered to be subhuman. Drug addicts, on government assistance, criminals, low lifes. Basically, not worth a damn. I am bipolar. High functioning, but still mentally ill. My illness has led to 5 involuntary psychiatric commitments at several different facilities in the greater New Orleans area. I've never written a review until now...A while ago I was told mental health facilities don't exist to get you help but rather to keep you safe. That in and of itself is what's wrong with the mental health care system in Louisiana but when you can't even keep me or my fellow mentally vulnerable bunk mates safe, we have a huge problem. I was sexually assaulted and threatened with physical violence, as were others in my unit. The facility's response, avoid these individuals as there was no where else to house them. If we didn't avoid the aggressors, we would have our stays extended because we would be considered instigators. I expected so much more from an Oschner facility. Based on the reviews, I tried to go to another facility but was denied based on lack of space, which was a lie. I was denied my mood stabilizers, which I've taken for nearly 10 years, on 6 different occasions. I could have faced life threatening side effects from abruptly stopping the medication. My mother, who is my biggest advocate, was repeatedly ignored when concerned about my treatment and my safety. Myself and others were denied hygiene kits because they were requested at "incorrect" times. You're fortunate if you ever get to meet with a psychiatric professional longer than a few minutes. Ultimately, a coroner decides your fate based on a 2 minute conversation. The better your insurance, the longer you stay. There was only one positive, an aide named Ola (likely misspelled). He was the kindest soul. Otherwise, the nurses never looked up from their paperwork (what paperwork they were reviewing is still a mystery) and the remaining aides were too busy blasting vulgar music at 830 in the morning. Oh, and HIPPA violations were rampant. I was, however, fortunate to meet some of the sweetest people that simply wanted help. Unfortunately, they'll never receive it. I will be their voice! You will not dismiss us! You will not disregard us! You will be exposed for what you have done!

Accepted Insurance

River Place Behavioral Health Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

If you are struggling with motivation to change, motivational interviewing is designed to help. This method typically involves one or two sessions with a therapist. The technique helps you understand your motivations and empowers you to make changes to reach your goals.

In Louisiana, trauma therapy helps you explore the impact that a traumatic event has had on your life. You can experience emotional and physical responses if you witness or experience a traumatic event. Your therapist guides you in processing the trauma and then developing coping strategies that improve your quality of life.

Couples therapy focuses on helping the couple develop skills that will improve the relationship. These include communication, conflict resolution, and anger management. Couples also identify dysfunctional behaviors and work to eliminate them.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

This facility is nothing more than a money scam. The food is unsanitary and made me sick with diarrhea. Mold, leaks, and filth are everywhere, and the showers flood into adjacent rooms. There is no real rehabilitation happening here—patients are simply drugged into calmness while being neglected on every other level. They wake people every two hours to take vitals, ensuring no one ever gets a full night of rest. Instead of offering genuine mental health support, staff cycle through the same three questions—“Do you feel like harming yourself? Do you feel like harming others? Are you depressed or anxious?”—with no compassion or follow-up. Most of the staff, besides a few exceptions, are very friendly and seem to be doing their jobs. But their work amounts to little more than the mundane task of monitoring human beings like characters in a simulation, rather than offering meaningful care. This is not a place of healing. It is a glorified simulation where a corporation exploits vulnerable people for profit. If you or a loved one truly needs help, avoid this place at all costs.

I’ve called up there numerous of time requesting my father to give a call back but the message never gets to him , when asked to speak to nurse or doctor they’re always busy and says they will give you a call back but never reach back out. My father was released after a week being there and came out worse than he went in. He was injured twice while being there. They said he “fell” I think personally they were abusing him. The staff has rude attitudes.

My aunt was brought to this facilty where they took her jewerly and medications. At time of discharge they couldn't find her jewerly or medications. After about 20 minutes they found her jewerly but no medicines. They said they were lost. I am not stupid the street value is several hundred dollars, what conclusion would you come too. I am on hold for the 9th phone call while writing this review and I have been waiting for more than 20 minutes and counting. Beverly, a patient advocate is the last number I was tranfered too. She has not returned my calls or my auntscalls. We even had one of her doctors call and they ignored him as well. She had arterial bypass surgery three weeks before going there. Her leg began swelling while there. After getting out we rushed appoints for her cardiolist who gave her two shots and scheduled ultrasounds to check for blood clots which is one med they changed while in their facilty and so called lost a 3 month prescription as well as others. This is an Oschner facility and so far she cannot get them to respond in any way. Tomorrow will be filing a police report on the missing drugs.

My LSU class ring and 2 other important pendants on my necklace was stolen. I was pecd even though I requested ti for inpatient and the idk what is wrong with these people. I can't with a walker and other medical equipment they would not let me have. I was verbally assaulted my Greg the nurse and Keira the tech with lupus. She called me a little girl and said she was better than me because I was in a mental hospital. The one she works at. Greg came and gave me a shot that my neuromuscular specialist told them not to give me. Because I wouldn't let him verbally assault and insult me. Mind you I have a back brace, 2 knee braces , a walker and a cane and a scooter at home. I never received my 15 year college class ring back and I have it on camera I left my home with it. They would not let me check in my possessions even though I begged. The nurse at ochsner in baton rouge let me see my necklace when I left and I am certain they stole it. The kids side also had a code while I was there because the staff is ridiculous. Another staff member also told me I wasn't going home and made fun of me. Mind you I came for alcoholism, depression and anxiety and I have a rare neurological autoimmune condition and these people were not equip to handle me. I have contacted ochsner and the hospital to get my very special jewelry back. I filed grievances in and out of the hospital which is why the incompetent staff was mad at me even the so called patient advocates. The cruelty I experienced here was so unhelpful and disgusting and I have filled complaints with the state and I don't care what happens didn't let your family be here

Do not send your family here. If i could leave 0 stars i would. My sister was placed here last night. I was on my way to drop off some clothes to her. Around 11:15 as i’m pulling into the facility, i receive a call from my sister. She’s hysterical and she’s trying to talk but i can’t understand her. I told her to catch her breath and explain to me what was going on. She tells me another patient put their hands on her just before she called me. Keep in mind me she just turned 18. When I went inside i stood at the door for 15 minutes ringing a bell. No one was even at the front desk. Anyways I ask the tech who came out of the back if there was a protective procedure that is followed or if the patient will be moved to another unit. She just proceeded to say no one could have put their hands on her because there are nurses all over the floor. However my personal experience here shows this is Untrue. I’ve had 3 situations in one 5 day visit where i was being jumped by two or more patients that don’t even belong in a hospital, they should’ve been in prison. I will sue this facility for public endangerment. How can you go somewhere to get help and still be abused?
