About United Hospital – Behavioral Health

United Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in the St Paul area and is recognized nationally and internationally for its excellent care. Although this hospital doesn’t specialize in substance abuse and co-occurring mental health disorders, it does offer treatment for those struggling with addiction. It has a mental health and addiction center that operates various substance abuse programs, including an outpatient program and medically assisted detox treatment.

United Hospitals’ substance abuse rehab services vary and are individualized depending on care needs. Besides offering group therapy, family therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and individual psychotherapy, the following services can be expected surrounding drug and alcohol abuse treatment:

United Hospital does not provide an intensive outpatient program (IOP), but it does have an outpatient program (OP) that offers individualized treatment plans. Those who enroll in this 12 to 15 week long program undergo a mental health and addiction assessment to better formulate a recovery path. Often treatment includes group therapy and individual therapy with a licensed practitioner to develop life skills and coping mechanisms to prevent relapse.

At United Hospital, a 21 to 28 day inpatient Opioid Treatment Program is offered whereby patients receive medically assisted treatment via methadone and suboxone dosing. As part of the medically assisted treatment, patients will receive 24 hour nursing care, skills based group therapy, substance abuse education, and counseling with psychiatrists and licensed substance abuse practitioners.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

I have seen April Lund here for many years and I highly recommend her! She takes the time to listen to you and highly involves you in your treatment plan. She always knows my medical history and takes the time to really listen. The front desk staff and nurses are fantastic too! My only complaint is that this clinic can be tricky to find and wish there were more clear instructions for in person visits. I would recommend going a few minutes early to find parking and get to the office.

Psychiatrists expect a patient to open up and be honest . What is the point if a psychiatrist refuses to listen and come to there own conclusion that a patient is perfectly fine . never been here before but my former psychiatrist works here now . I’m suffering nightmares with panic attack due to her medication negligence. A lot of my suppress childhood trauma resurfaced while seeing her . I’ve filed a complaint with the Minnesota board of psychology . Whatever the psychiatrist reason for neglecting my medication is , it will be unfounded .

They will not write you an ESA letter. Do NOT go here if you have a current ESA letter that will need rewriting in the future. Do not go here if you ever will need an ESA letter. You will absolutely waste your time and money. I have ESA paperwork from my old clinic and asked for it to be rewritten by my current provider so I don’t have to make the trip back to my old clinic (3 hours away). They said they cannot do it, and the entire Alina health system is legally not allowed to. Regardless on how irritating I personally find this, I would never want another person to waste their time and money going here for this purpose to find out they can’t help you. They will make no exceptions for this, and even if you already have paperwork from past doctors/therapists they will not issue you any new paperwork for ESA.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
We apologize that the experience at our clinic was not positive, Marie. Please call 1-888-425-5462 to speak with a patient service representative about your care.

What Allina or the therapist don’t tell you is that everything you share in your therapy session is recorded and posted on your medical chart as well as your “My Chart”. This was done to me without my consent or knowledge. When I questioned three separate Allina representatives (one from the “record privacy” office) all said that any Allina staff authorized to have access to patient records can review your private therapy notes. There is no failsafe that stops them from viewing your records. I was told all employees sign an agreement restricting them from doing so without a reason. But there is NOTHING in place that tracks who is viewing your records. This is a serious violation on several levels. The fact that the Allina counselor did not inform me that my private session was going to be posted on a medical records site is a breach of therapist / patient confidentiality. It’s betrayal at it’s absolute worst.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Thank you for your message. We encourage you to call and ask to speak to the clinic manager.
