About Verde Valley Medical Center

Verde Valley Medical Center in Cottonwood, Arizona, is just west of Sedona and east of Jerome State Historic Park. They provide behavioral health and psychiatry services, including a full range of hospital-based inpatient and outpatient services for adolescents, adults, and seniors.

Integrated Team Approach to Substance Abuse Treatment

The program uses an integrated team that together provides a holistic approach to treating substance abuse issues and mental health conditions. In addition to the care you receive with the team, they also provide you with resources within the community or the hospital system to address other physical health conditions.

They recognize that taking a comprehensive approach to your physiological, spiritual, and social needs improves your potential for successfully achieving sobriety and sustainable recovery. They work with you each day to provide you with the care you need while evaluating your progress and updating your plan.

Specialized Behavioral Health Groups

They also provide specialized behavioral health group sessions when you’re looking for specific help. For example, in the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Group, you can learn how to manage your life by reducing your emotional ups and downs. The Navigating Age Group is led by a psychologist who helps you overcome the challenges associated with the aging process.

They are connected with the Northern Arizona Healthcare Office of Philanthropy and accept donations through this organization to help provide care for patients who are unable to pay for services or do not have health insurance.

I was admitted voluntarily to the mental health area. It was the most traumatic experience of my life and was nothing short of psychological torture. Just the thing a potentially suicidal person needs. The real lesson I learned from that was that if I was ever really in danger of hurting myself, I should keep my mouth shut.I was stuck in a windowless box with very little information. I was waiting for the next thing to occur constantly, thinking I was getting out soon, and asking my observer was fruitless. All I could do the entire time was watch dry paint. I had no sense of the passage of time and my anxiety was more extreme than I had ever felt. When I got really scared, I asked to call my mom. They wouldn't let me. None of my family even knew I was in there. When they told me I was being sent somewhere for treatment, I was so scared. I didn't know why I was being treated like that and I felt nothing resembling compassion from anyone until morning shift arrived but by then I was losing my mind and was terrified to my core and regrettably I was a pain for the morning crew. My mind was going to horror movie places, like they were going harvest my organs or something. Only a little funny, in retrospect, because the terror was real and I still feel it when I dwell on my time there.Everything changed when I got to the Flagstaff behavioral health center. I was greeted with warmth and sympathy and it was one huge relief after another. I cried a lot because of how extreme the contrast was with VVMC. I was only there for two days, and it was a little boring but I was okay and the psychologist was quickly able to see what I had been trying to say all along, which is that I made some threats to my own life to emotionaly hurt people who were hurting me, but I wasn't a risk to myself or others. It was a not only extremely validating but it made me that much more aware of how severely the crew in Cottonwood failed me, and surely fail others. The Flagstaff center showed me that there are people who care and can help if I ever got that bad. But also, if you don't need to be there, they will see and you get out quicker.Stack this on top of the usual awful experience of visiting the ER at the Verde Vally Medical Center and I'm angry that they aren't being taken over, like by goverment or another company, however it would work.

I entered the ED about 8:30 AM on June 3, 2024. I was alone, shaking and barely able to stand, aged 77. (It was not busy that morning.)I was immediately impressed by the excellent ED nurse, who drew blood and set up an IV - which is usually a major problem for me -- having had many infiltrations, and a two DVTs from faulty IV jabs at the Flagstaff ED. No problems this time! I wish I could remember her name. However, with my brain fog at the time, I was in no shape to remember names.I had X-rays of my chest and I was quickly diagnosed with Bilateral Pneumonia caused by COVID-19. The actual ED physician was beyond excellent, although rushed. (VVMC has now added a second ED physician position, called an "Admitting Physician", in my case Dr Haboukh, who decided I needed to go into the hospital. His name showed up on my Discharge Instructions.)I was in the hospital for several days being treated for the pneumonia, in the COVID ward. The nursing staff was very caring and professional. I especially remember Anthony, who is an excellent communicator. Also the nurse with the Russian accent, who exhibited exceptional medical and leadership skills. Dr Duane Lambert is listed as my attending physician. He is an excellent geriatric doctor, although way too overloaded. All my care providers should be listed on the VVMC discharge papers, so I could thank them individually. I am certain that they saved my life!

Accepted Insurance

Verde Valley Medical Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab is designed primarily for persons in early recovery and those who are exiting detox programs. It's ideal for clients in crisis or at an elevated risk of relapse. Inpatient treatment centers provide housing and meals, allowing clients to focus on their recovery away from distractions and addiction triggers. Clients engage in intensive psychotherapy, and many inpatient programs feature recovery-focused life skills training and/or complementary therapies like meditation, creative arts therapy, and other holistic treatments.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
If a person denies their substance abuse behavior when confronted one-on-one, a drug intervention in Arizona may be necessary. An intervention may be formally planned with intervention services from a professional who can guide loved ones through this process. The intervention involves confronting someone with how their drinking or drug use has affected themselves and everyone around them and encourages them to get treatment.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers a short-term alternative to inpatient treatment or a step-down option after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you'll receive 6 to 8 hours of daily support, up to 5 days a week. The duration of a partial hospitalization program can vary with the average length being 90 days. While commuting is necessary, some programs also offer telehealth options. PHP treatment is often covered by insurance and typically offers medication management, relapse prevention techniques, and behavioral therapy.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

In December 2024, I was experiencing severe stabbing pains with an unusual nerve pain from my abdomen going to my side and around to my back. I couldn't sit, lay down it was intense pain. Make a ER visit, waited 12 hours in the waiting room, to be told it was a skeletal or muscle issue. Went back to the ER room again waited another 11 hours in the waiting room. Examined and told I was being admitted into the hospital. Never did get a diagnoses. My husband went to the nurses station talked with a nurse and the doctor assigned to my case. They confirmed I was being admitted. My husband took my handbag with all my ID, credit card, debit card, keys. About an hour later the nurse came into my room and said I was being discharged at 3:00 AM. How in the world will I get home was my first though. The nurse came back in and said she was calling a taxi and I would be leaving soon. What a "shock" no diagnosis and an elderly woman, sent on with zero from of ID or means to get home, my husband left in our car. Never did have a diagnosis after spending 23 in the ER waiting room. In the afternoon after my discharge I made an appointment with Immediate Care in Camp Verde and finally learned what my problem was, I had a severe case of shingles. Two medical doctors in the ER failed and maybe did not have the experience to be in ER at any hospital. We are placing our house up for sale and getting out of this area, medical services suck. Lived here for 28 years. Scary living near a hospital that has horrific services, when a senior citizen. This can be proved if I have all the medical records. A hospital discharging a patient at 3:00 AM after being told by the doctor and nurse I was being admitted. Beware --- I have talked with family members medical professionals, they said they never heard of such a case, but not able to sue. My taxi road home cost me $60.00.

This review is for my billing experience with NAH and their mediocre outsourced billing department (Wakefield and Associates). I’ve been trying to obtain my itemized bill for months, disputed the questionable charges in writing, and still they refused the explanation and never provided the codes for services they are billing me for. NAH and W&A practice upcoding, unbundling and violate HIPPA by refusing itemized bills to patients. I will have to waste my time now by taking them to court and making a video about this so-called “non-profit” hospital’s shady billing practices.

This is a review of Labor and Delivery. I’m truly appalled on how everything went. My birth plan was completely ignored. When I arrived finally, I tried to use a peanut ball and the nurse literally said no and took it away. Everyone kept disturbing me and wouldn’t leave me alone. I already had a horrible labor as I was in a so called “maternity home” that actually was a cult that treated the women like they were in a halfway house. Drove all around Sedona. Never had peace when in labor. So the fact that I was told no to using the ball was upsetting. I was also told no to nitrous oxide. Finally I agreed to an epidural, well I was forced onto my back and was told I couldn’t move. I should’ve been allowed to be on my side or use the peanut ball for the flying cowgirl position. So already a nightmare. My body literally gave out, my son’s oxygen and heart rate dropped, my contractions stopped, 1.5 hours of pushing I fainted, finally pitocin was administered and that forced everything to happen again which is a good thing but I felt too much time had passed. So finally he arrived, he was immediately taken to get measurements which again, my plan said to give us the golden hour. Whatever, finally set up in a post partum room. Well, again, on my birth plan it stated “all procedures to be done with me present, no bathing, and no pacifier.” Guess what? While I was ASLEEP, yes ASLEEP, the next shift nurse took him away from me and he was brought back with being bathed and had a sugar pacifier and found that his procedures were done. I felt taken advantage of because I was young and alone. Truly truly upset by the experience. This happened August 15th, 2019. Fast forward to present day my husband and I are expecting our daughter, I told my midwife my birth story and her jaw dropped. She was completely shocked. This time around I know to advocate for myself and for my daughter with my husband by my side. I know it’s been years, and I hope their practices have improved. If not, please use this example and advocate for your patients. Especially the ones that I know come from the maternity home that I know uses your hospital as they already have been through so much and are not being treated well there.

Response from the ownerInvalid relative date format:
Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re truly sorry you didn’t feel that your birth preferences were honored and that your labor and postpartum care felt distressing. We appreciate your feedback and wish you all the best as you prepare for the arrival of your daughter. This review is years in the making, so this message will be long. I've lived in 3 other states & have seen specialists of all kinds, have travelled the country even to see specialists to try to get answers for over 10 years & never have i ever been so disturbingly disrespected by people in the healthcare system as I have been here at the Cottonwood ER. I have now lived here in the Verde for over 8 years & only in the last 2 has my condition flared up the worst it has in over 10 years, as Ive diligently worked with a team of doctors to overhaul my life. I've worked on changing my entire lifestyle - nutrition, supplements, exercise, etc. Changing all these things causes more flare ups, as my body is learning to do all new things. I have Endometriosis. It takes 10 years for women to be diagnosed with this because, NOT shockingly, most doctors don't believe women & say "its just bad period pains". I've seen SO many doctors & specialists, in different states & none of them believed my pain & just kept pushing medications onto me that only made my health worse. Its been a tough journey, but I finally met doctors in Sedona & Flagstaff who believed me & helped me narrow down my diagnosis. I have "suspected" Endo because you need to have a surgery to say 100% it is Endo. But. My doctors say that even if i had the surgery, id still have to change my entire lifestyle & diet FOR LIFE because the surgery isn't a cure. The tissue that causes pain will grow back UNLESS i change my lifestyle. Then it'll help it happen less & less. I am waiting to get the surgery because I want to give my body time to change. Doctors told me it could take years before I see progress. I get excruciatingly painful periods & from time to time the pain is unmanageable at home. Specialists say Endo pain is the 2nd most painful experience for women, the 1st being childbirth. YET. With all this information ive laid out here - that healthcare "professionals" here SHOULD understand - i still get treated with judgement, accusatory looks/talk & a whole HOST of disrespectful experiences from the staff at the Cottonwood ER. Especially from the doctors - which are by the way - NOT SPECIALISTS. The ONE & only doctor who treated me with compassion & kindness was a doctor who normally works at the ER in Flagstaff. Every other doctor ive seen have both scoffed at my treatment plan & the fact that I haven't gotten the surgery yet & look at me like i'm crazy for being at the ER again or treat me like a meth head looking for drugs. It's DISGUSTING. The pain i experience is the most debilitating, vulnerable & embarrassing experience AS IS - with me crying, crying out, yelling in pain, unable to lie still - without doctors treating me like i'm a fake! Acting as if i haven't been through hell to just LIVE. I shouldn't have to be afraid of being criticized for my pain when i go to the hospital, but now i wait until it's at the absolute worst moment - praying & hoping the pain will go away - just so i don't have to go to this ER. That is COMPLETELY unfair & wrong & I pray there are no other women treated this horribly for pain that is REAL & VALID. Just because I've had to visit the ER 4 times in the last year doesn't mean i'm just sitting around doing nothing to care for myself & Doctors acting as if that is the case JUST because i've returned to the ER is absolutely despicable. They don't know me or my complete history. This ISNT my choice. Id love to NEVER go back to this ER again. Today I experienced yet another terrible doctor at the ER & I'm sick of being quiet about it. Some of the female nurses here, all of the female specialists who have done tests on me were SO sweet, compassionate & understanding. But NONE of the doctors have shown me such grace, respect and civility. This hospital needs to DO BETTER. I'll be filing a formal complaint as high up as I have to go. No one should experience what i have.
