About Virginia Treatment Center for Children

Virginia Treatment Center for Children (VTCC) in Richmond offers inpatient and outpatient psychiatry and psychology services for children and youth. Individuals three years and older are eligible for care.

Inpatient Treatment for Addiction

Inpatient services last five to seven days. Accommodations provide each child or youth with their own room and bathroom with space allotted for a family member to stay overnight.

If your child is in crisis due to substance use, the staff will stabilize your child and provide pharmacological services. The hospital employs pharmacists who will work with your child’s physician to provide useful medications.

Nature Therapy in Richmond

Outdoor areas with playgrounds give the children a space to be outdoors and enjoy fresh air and nature. A therapy mall inside of the center hosts occupational, recreational, art, music, and play therapy.

Internal gardens provide horticultural therapy which promotes improved attention spans, reduction in depression, and emotional well being. A half court gym gives patients the opportunity for exercise with other patients.

Educational Services

A dining hall can accommodate children, families, and staff. Nutritional meals and a la carte foods are offered for a small price to family members.

We learn best in an environment we are used to learning in. Education is continued in a classroom similar to what each child or youth is used to learning in.

Supported by the Virginia Department of Education, your child will be on the same schedule and calendar as the local public schools. Special education teachers are available as needed.

Outpatient Substance Use Treatment

Outpatient therapy is available for children and youth who have homicidal or suicidal ideations, auditory or visual hallucinations, acute changes in mental health, or substance use. Therapy will take place in a stable and calming environment while a psychiatrist determines the treatment needed.

Therapy Groups for LGBTQIA+ Youth

A therapeutic peer support group is available for LGBTQIA+ individuals ages 13 to 17. Youth are able to safely discuss concerns and struggles with like minded peers while learning from a licensed social worker. A free support group is offered to parents of LGBTQIA+ youth.

This is not a drug rehabilitation center, as advertised in the description for VTCC. This is a pediatric inpatient psychiatric treatment center for those experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms. Although the social workers can connect patients with substance abuse specialists outside the practice, the therapeutic groups teach general coping skills for a variety of symptoms of mental illness, such as anxiety and depression. This facility treats children who are at risk for harming themselves or others, and the caption was correct to state that the average stay is 5-7 days. Although peer communication is valued here, patients are not allowed to discuss substance use of any kind beyond brief mentioning as an example of self harm in groups led by social workers. You may have one or two sessions with a social worker to discuss alternatives to substance use, but the majority is spent discussing triggers and the patients’ current living situation.

I will be eternally grateful with the treatment my brother received at this center. They are serious about giving treatment and show how experienced they are at every moment of the treatment. The results were outstanding so I completely recommend it.

Accepted Insurance

Virginia Treatment Center for Children works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Alcohol use disorder, which is often used interchangeably with the term alcoholism, is a chronic, relapsing condition. While it is characterized by harmful patterns of alcohol use and physical dependence on the substance, the condition can be managed and treated. Effective alcohol rehab in Virginia is available in a variety of formats, including inpatient, outpatient, medication-assisted therapy, and mutual-support groups.

When you enroll in drug rehab in Virginia, a treatment plan is designed by professional staff in order to help you overcome drug addiction and modify addictive behaviors. This may include evidence-based treatments, group and individual therapy, and relapse prevention.

Programs

Child Program

The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
teen-program thumbnail image

Teen Program

Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.
