This review is solely for the BUSINESS and BILLING department of CHI. I absolutely loved my experience at the birth center with the midwives and nurses there. However, my experience during pregnancy and now postpartum with the billing department has been HORRENDOUS. Every single time I call, someone tells me something different. In fact, my payment amount actually went up $1,000 after trying to clarify with the sixth or seventh person I talked to. There was no apology issued or confidence instilled that they would rectify things in the future. Overall, a HORRIBLE experience with billing that makes me nearly never want to go to a CHI hospital again just to avoid the whole billing department.Oh and I have talked with a grievance officer who directed me to a person in leadership. That person was the one who said I owe $1,000 more than originally thought. No apology, no clarification, actually the opposite - just asking for more money after a year of frustration and confusion.Update 4/1I m currently on the phone with a supervisor (for the fourth time) and the amount owed RASIED AGAIN by $200. They apologized for the confusion and said I could call back with any questions. Every. Single. Time. I call and they raise the amount I owe somehow. The only question I have is why aren t you more organized and why don t you listen back to the phone calls that are recorded for quality assurance and actually help me instead of just charging me more and more and more?Update 4/3Another person in leadership called me. He essentially went over the whole bill again and actually gave the same number as I was given two days prior. He said he would personally send an email with explanation of the bill and I would receive a statement (the same one I was told multiple times that I would get) in the mail. However, the mailed statement would not be updated correctly so for the meantime I should just wait. He also said that he would talk to someone to see about one of the bills and possibly getting a discount. Overall the best conversation I d had.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Within trauma therapy, you're able to work through the memories of a traumatic event within a safe and supportive environment. Your therapist will guide you to develop healthy coping mechanisms that reduce the emotional impact of the trauma and improve your overall well being.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Absolutely disgusting emergency rooms. After cleaning a chair in the emergency department, I found crumbs, crackers, hair everything dirt sand everything under the sun you could possibly find in the crease of a chair in the emergency room where people are taken in emergency situations. This is one of the reasons why hospital acquired illnesses are so high. Can you imagine being taken to a hospital with open wounds and this is what your hospital bed looks like? Absolutely disgusting.

I just feel the quality of care now adays has declined

Updated 5/19 at the bottom: TLDR - I’ve cried so many times because the billing department has never given me a straight answer about what I owe. I ended up paying $1,600 more than they told me I owed just so that we could stop talking to them. But even after I paid, they are still calling me to collect. Overall, a HORRIBLE experience with billing that makes me nearly never want to go to a CHI hospital again just to avoid the whole billing department. Oh and I have talked with a grievance officer who directed me to a person in “leadership.” That person was the one who said I owe $1,000 more than originally thought. No apology, no clarification, actually the opposite - just asking for more money after a year of frustration and confusion. Update 4/1 I’m currently on the phone with a “supervisor” (for the fourth time) and the amount owed RASIED AGAIN by $200. They apologized for the confusion and said I could call back with any questions. Every. Single. Time. I call and they raise the amount I owe somehow. The only question I have is why aren’t you more organized and why don’t you listen back to the phone calls that are “recorded for quality assurance” and actually help me instead of just charging me more and more and more? However, the mailed statement would not be updated correctly so for the meantime I should just wait. He also said that he would talk to someone to see about one of the bills and possibly getting a discount. Overall the best conversation I’d had. 4/10 Had what I hope to be my last conversation with the billing department here. Court called to say that the discount that was originally offered to me months ago but was not actually able to be given to me…is now able to be given to me. He also said that the representatives I talked to would be given renewed training and apologized for all the confusion. I am now waiting for a new statement to be mailed to me next month. Hopefully, this will be the final one! Thank you, Court, for your help. 5/15 They called me multiples times and I let it go to voicemail. I’ve been waiting for a statement that they told me would come and which still hasn’t come. I called in and asked for an update and they gave me the wrong balance AGAIN and said that it would take 30-45 days for the settlement to be reviewed and for my chart to be updated, but I had to give them the number from last time and ask for the update to happen. Got to talk to a supervisor, Kevin, who said that I should just pay now because the accounts will never be updated. Then he said that he was wrong with the amount he gave me and the account was right. Ended up paying $400 more than the last supervisor told me (and emailed me) just to be able to stop talking to the billing department. 5/20 Even though I paid, they are still calling me and leaving me voicemails to call them!!

I had entered the hospital through the emergency room and spent a week in a private room. Overall I am very impressed with the overall level of care. The staff was very responsive to all of my needs. I only had one very small complaint in that there was not usb port available so that I could charge my phone, and I had to have one brought in to use.
