About the Facility

The Brien Center – Pomeroy House is an addiction treatment center that is situated in the Berkshire County, Massachusetts area. This rehab center offers clients an integrated model of care with comprehensive substance abuse treatment programs and highly trained clinicians. As one of the very best drug and alcohol detox centers in the state, The Brien Center also offers individualized, evidence based programming that is strength based, client directed, and person centered.

Since The Brien Center – Pomeroy House offers a fully integrated continuum of care, it’s unsurprising that this addiction treatment center for drugs and alcohol provides a few programs. Some of the treatment programs offered by this institution include the following:

The Brien Center offers supportive housing during its inpatient substance abuse treatment program. This housing provides clients with an affordable, safe, and sober environment to help promote adaptive living skills and reduce the likelihood of relapse. Those involved in the inpatient residential program must stay at least 90 days.

Medication assisted treatment in the form of Suboxone and Vivitrol consultations and evaluations are offered at The Brien Center – Pomeroy House. In addition, as part of the treatment plan, clients are involved in mixed and gender specific Suboxone recovery groups to help with relapse prevention and adapting to replacement therapy.

The Brien Center – Pomeroy House has an intensive outpatient program (IOP) designed to follow a day treatment program. This IOP offers patient centered care for those suffering from substance abuse disorders through group and individual therapy.

In addition, The Brien Center IOP provides enhanced treatment options for working individuals, and it has an anxiety and substance abuse disorder group. This eight week group helps people find adaptive ways to overcome addiction through cognitive therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy.

book iconAlcoholism

A person who has alcohol use disorder (alcoholism) builds up a physical tolerance to alcohol. If they try to stop drinking, they experience withdrawal symptoms. Treatment is available for this condition, through alcohol rehab in Massachusetts. Treatment options include AA, detox, counseling, medication, residential programs, and outpatient treatment. Social and family support systems are crucial during and after treatment of any kind.

prescription iconDrug Addiction

Addiction is a highly complex problem, and drug rehab in Massachusetts is often necessary to address it. These programs treat physical, mental, and relational issues that are involved. Treatment empowers individuals to manage these issues without the use of drugs.

head-side-medical iconDual Diagnosis

In Massachusetts, dual-diagnosis addiction treatment programs provide specialized care for individuals with co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health conditions. Levels of care include detox, residential drug and alcohol rehab, and outpatient programs. Each program and level of care includes a comprehensive assessment, individualized treatment plan, and evidence-based therapies, like cognitive behavioral therapy, or dialectical behavioral therapy. You’ll also attend recovery support groups, receive family counseling, and beneficial skills training to help you promote your mental health and sustain long-term recovery.

file-medical iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

In Massachusetts, dual-diagnosis rehabs are usually the appropriate solution to treat co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders. These facilities typically employ medical and behavioral experts who use a range of interventions, together with the right healing environment, for you to achieve and sustain long-term recovery. Treatment usually includes evidence-based therapies (like cognitive behavioral therapy), recovery support meetings, 12-step facilitation, psychoeducation, skills training, and group therapy.

prescription-bottle-pill iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Medical briefcase icon Levels of Care

bed-front iconInpatient

The Adult CCS provides staff-secure, safe and structured crisis stabilization and treatment services in a community-based program that serves as an alternative to inpatient psychiatric hospitalization for individuals with mental health and/or substance use disorders. Services at this level of care include crisis stabilization; initial and continuing assessment; care management; psychiatric evaluation and medication management; peer-to-peer support; and mobilization of natural supports and community resources.

clipboard-medical iconMedically Assisted Detox

Medically supervised detox is the process of removing addictive substances from your body and managing the withdrawal symptoms in a medically supervised environment. Typically, this is the first step in the recovery process and lasts an average of 5-7 days, though the length can vary depending on your individual needs. Once your system is cleared of alcohol and drugs, you’ll likely transition to an inpatient treatment program for the next phase of your recovery.

truck-medical icon24-Hour Clinical Care

At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

people-group iconIntervention Services

The Brien Center’s ESP/Crisis Team provides Mobile Crisis Intervention services to both youth and adults as an integral part of their comprehensive behavioral health crisis services continuum. Services are provided at community-based locations including, but not limited to, private homes, residential programs and schools. Specifically for youth, the crisis clinician provides up to 7 days of crisis intervention and stabilization services including: onsite face-to-face therapeutic response, psychiatric consultation, and urgent psychopharmacology intervention as needed; and referrals and linkages to all necessary behavioral health services and supports, including referral to their own Child and Adolescent Division.

house-medical iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

house iconSober Living Homes

A sober living home offers a supportive environment where individuals in recovery provide mutual support as they share household responsibilities. Residents participate in 12-step programs and offer accountability for sobriety. To remain in men’s or women’s sober living, individuals must remain drug and alcohol-free, contribute to chores, attend support group meetings, and help cover expenses to live in the home.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Couples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The Brien Center’s comprehensive DBT program is designed to decrease severe depression, associated suicidal thoughts, and self-harmful behaviors while increasing self-management skills such as distress tolerance, emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness.

Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Experiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Family Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Individual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.
