About Washburn House

In early recovery, learning to adapt to a new lifestyle can seem challenging and uncomfortable. While you are inpatient treatment they will introduce to you CBT and DBT, which go hand in hand to help ease anxiety, depression and trauma. These therapies also boost your mood and improve coping skills.

Yoga therapy helps with managing stress, increases self awareness, reduces pain and muscle cramping and provides more mental clarity. You can do yoga alone or with others. Yoga incorporates body movement, increases bone strength and helps improve blood circulation.

Throughout your journey of healing being, able to talk to a licensed clinician along with attending group, family and individual sessions helps you get a better understanding of yourself and others as well as process emotions. Feeling sensitive and emotional is also part of the journey, and having proper guidance to navigate through it helps increase self awareness and teaches you how to emotionally regulate. This also helps with developing better communication skills and improving relationships with not only yourself but with loved ones as well.

First off the pictures you see of the inside are not the detox facility, and I would NOT recommend them. RCA, NERC, or even spectrum has much better recovery if that's your goal. They do have live mice running around the facility if you like pets. They are fast though. The cleanliness is definitely lacking. The only structure was your 6 cigarette breaks. There is no orientation, no written schedule, the food is served and your are just exped to know when. Oh and the groups are a joke, the few who show up are eat, drinking, talking. The Clients are either under medicated or over medicated. Meals aren't announced, and everyone sticks their hands in. It's the first place I was truely dissatisfied with in 15 years and the only facility I chose to walk out AMA.

A horrendous experience . there’s no caseworkers and the ones there don’t even know what they are doing. The new ceo is completely out of touch and some of the staff treat you like you are below them . Mice, Bedbugs and moldy rooms they do nothing about. Despite this they keep filling the beds. Don’t go here if you are expecting to get anything done for your future recovery. The staff that was there before are being gutted and let go for people who aren’t even in recovery. Extended care is night and day compared to the css but i wouldn’t go through the detox or css just to get to extended care.

Accepted Insurance

Washburn House works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient programs are designed for clients who are medically stable and not at an elevated risk of relapse, including those who have already completed inpatient care. Outpatient programs typically advance clients' established treatment plans, offering continuing addiction counseling and recovery education. Clients who enter outpatient care immediately following detox may also receive medical and mental health assessments and personalized treatment plans. Most outpatient rehabs provide multiple levels of care to align with clients' unique needs.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Rehab aftercare programs offer customized, wraparound support for clients in the maintenance phase of recovery. Many clients enroll in drug rehab immediately after completing intensive inpatient or residential care. Services encompass outpatient treatment but often extend long beyond the completion of a formal recovery program and typically include a variety of medical, mental health, and social service programs. Peer coaching, relapse prevention, 12 step program induction, and related services are commonly available.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

Due to various health issues that substance abuse causes, 24-hour clinical care in Massachusetts is often a necessary part of treatment. Individuals may be suffering from infections, illness, or organ damage. Having 24-hour care available ensures that these physical problems are treated along with the psychological effects of addiction. Once individuals complete detox and are medically stable, this intensive level of supervision ends, and the next phase of treatment can begin.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Addiction is a highly complex problem, and drug rehab in Massachusetts is often necessary to address it. These programs treat physical, mental, and relational issues that are involved. Treatment empowers individuals to manage these issues without the use of drugs.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Recreational therapy helps you as you recover from drug and alcohol addiction in Massachusetts by giving you structured activities to improve your physical and mental health. By participating in sports, creative arts, or nature activities, you have a positive outlet for emotions and stress that may have otherwise triggered alcohol or drug use. This helps to foster a healthy sober lifestyle.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

During experiential therapy, clients process their emotions and situations from the inside out. This is different than the outside in approach of talk therapies. Experiential methods include art, music, equine therapy, and drama, which allow creative expression and personal interaction.

Great experience going through ATS. Matt Moriarty was great, still responsive 60 days later. CSS, however, is completely opposite. My case manager for the first 2 weeks had a personal setback, abruptly left. My next case manager(1 week) also left. I found out my "charts" were blank on day 17 of CSS, nothing was started. How this can get through management is mind-boggling. They have nothing in place for a situation like this, basically finding out now that I missed every aftercare bed I applied for because nobody could access company emails, don't make sense the account doesn't have an admin that can access these emails as these emails (aftercare) are crucial for continued care. They have some staff that seem to really care. However, they seem to be in over their heads lacking the knowledge to get everything done in the time frame allowed by insurance carriers. If the new CEO continues to get rid of all the staff with the knowledge needed(even the priest that has been there since the beginning got fired this week), then Washburn will continue to lack the staff needed to help someone succeed. If you have a plan in place for yourself after completing CSS, it's not a bad place(mice, mold, and bedbugs aside). If you need help with aftercare, then it may not be the best idea. I would recommend going through all your options on what's needed for your journey through recovery.

I’ve been to Washburn a couple times in the past, this May I went back for a week, the building is old, I get it, but the mouse infestation is insane. Had to move my bed to get something and there was mouse crap everywhere… they run by you EVERYWHERE in the building, they are unbothered by people and run past you in the halls, dining room, your private rooms… I had more anxiety about going to sleep than anything else. You can hear them skittering around in the dark… frightening. Please get it together. The staff is great, foods tolerable, med line needs work but I know the med staff are doing their best under the circumstances. This place can do better.

Response from the owner
We’re truly sorry to hear about the issue you experienced. We appreciate your recognition of our staff’s efforts and are committed to making the necessary improvements. Thank you again for bringing this to our attention.

Detox/recovery isn't fun. While I'll share my complaints/issues, I'll preface: Washburn, in my opinion, is the best available I've found in my area, and this Commonwealth is lucky to have what we have. If you're reading this and considering where to go, think before you act. If you plan to consider complaining about food, pillows, mice, meds, the amount of cigarette breaks (6)...please consider how life is right now for you. If you want a start to recover, you'll have it there. As far as staff is concerned, save for the nurses and Doctors that work there, 95% of which are still amazing and patient, the staff at Washburn knows what recovery is because they live it. You will not find a more understanding/persevering staff. Negatives: A huge problem for me in going to these places is becoming institutionalized. Washburn, within the past year, has instituted a no watch (time-telling machine) policy. They also have very few clocks. Unacceptable to me. If one is expected to show up on time, one should be able to keep time. I find no reason for that other than pseudo control. Because of it, many just don't show up, which hurts community inside and hurts recovery in general. Staff spread thin: Their staff, for the most part, is selfless. But they can only do so much. Your questions/concerns might not get answered in a timely fashion, but staff is overloaded. Not a good business practice in my opinion, especially when there is no lack of profit. Cigarettes: Im a non-smoker who loves ice cream, but still, certain folks lack of cigarettes is unfair, it creates a weird power dynamic of who has what for whom. Suggestion- Dump the fifty five gallon drums of ice cream and spend it on house cartons. No matter how dumb that sounds, it will breed equality among patients. Again, I don't smoke. I love ice cream. If people, selfish or selfless, didn't have to worry about their next cigarette, the daily would be way more even keel. Bottom line: If you need and are ready for recovery, Washburn house, in my opinion, is about the best one can get.
