I stayed at Clearbrook in October of 2024, so I realize my experience may be “outdated.” However, I very much doubt anything has improved in the last 6 months. I will do my best to summarize the most important parts. 1. They don’t have a 24/7 phone line. So if your loved one needs to contact you during an emergency, chances are, no one will pick up. And if your loved one leaves a message, you probably won’t get it. 2. They have strict time limits on phone calls that are only allowed in the evenings. So if you need to contact a business, you aren’t able to call during business hours. 3. They are SEVERELY understaffed. They will let anyone with a pulse be put in a position to supervise patients. So don’t be surprised if you wake up in the middle of the night to the janitor doing room checks. I’m not exaggerating. 4. They are not “trauma informed”. During my stay, multiple women left due to the fact that they had strange men doing room checks on them in the middle of the night. You’d think they’d have the sense to put female staff in charge of female patients with male-related trauma. 5. Good luck getting your caseworker or provider to meet with you. I, and most other patients there, had to request multiple times to see our caseworkers and providers. One person even went so far as to stop taking their medication for multiple days, just to get the staff to pay attention to their request to see their provider. Yes, people had to go to the extreme just to receive the services they were initially promised. 6. So many needs went unmet, that the group I was staying with decided to file a group complaint with the facility. In response, Clearbrook singled out a female, who was also a person of color, and placed the blame on her for our group complaint. Though their handbook promises to take each complaint seriously and not retaliate, they singled out this woman and treated her like a troublemaker. 7. They repeatedly accepted patients that they did not have the capacity to accommodate. A few people there clearly needed more intensive hospitalization and the severity of their symptoms went ignored until enough people spoke up about it. We went into lockdown multiple times due to unsafe patients that never should have been accepted into the facility to begin with. (I am not saying these patients didn’t deserve help. I’m saying the facility was not equipped to help people with such severe symptoms.) As a result of Clearbrook’s negligence, patients were often placed in situations they did not feel safe in. 8. I filed multiple complaints and personally wrote a letter to the CEO addressing my concerns. All of which went ignored. Despite their own policy stating that any complaints/concerns would be addressed within 24 hours of them being filed. Welp, it’s been over 6 months and I’m still waiting for my concerns to be addressed. 9. They don’t even offer mental health benefits to their staff. Most of the staff is overworked and underpaid. Supporting mentally ill patients is a huge task and is sure to take a toll on a person’s mental health. So I straight up asked one of the staff members if they were at least offered some type of support from Clearbrook for their own mental health. And the answer was no. This place clearly doesn’t give a sh!t about the mental health of their patients, let alone their own staff! Super unethical. 10. I will say, some of the staff were amazing. My therapist, Kenny, was so great that he’s the only reason I completed my stay at Clearbrook. The group facilitator, Alyssa was also amazing and very supportive. The alumni coordinator, Rebecca, does a great job checking in and supporting alumni. I’d say the main problems are the higher ups, who really don’t give a sh!t about their patients or staff. It’s a shame because this facility has so much potential and it’s completely wasted. All of that was just the tip of the iceberg, folks. I’m not saying it’s the worst facility out there. I’m saying, lower your expectations and proceed with caution.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs offer customized, wraparound support for clients in the maintenance phase of recovery. Many clients enroll in drug rehab immediately after completing intensive inpatient or residential care. Services encompass outpatient treatment but often extend long beyond the completion of a formal recovery program and typically include a variety of medical, mental health, and social service programs. Peer coaching, relapse prevention, 12 step program induction, and related services are commonly available.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab offers robust, hands-on care in a highly structured and supportive environment. The facility provides housing, meals, and round-the-clock supervision, allowing clients to focus exclusively on their recovery. Inpatient treatment typically involves intensive addiction counseling based on CBT, DBT, RBT, motivational interviewing, or other psychotherapeutic approaches. Many inpatient treatment centers also offer life skills training and/or complementary therapies, including meditation, mindfulness, and nutrition counseling.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) facilitate clients' sustained sobriety through high-level care aligned with their evolving needs. Clients engage in multiple treatment sessions per week, typically receiving between nine and 20 hours of outpatient care weekly. The frequency and intensity of treatment gradually decreases as clients stabilize. Many intensive outpatient rehabs offer a variety of services, including addiction counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT). Evidence-based complementary therapies are also common.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
A drug intervention in Massachusetts provides friends and family the opportunity to share how a person's substance use has caused problems in their lives. The goal of the intervention is to encourage the person to get the treatment they need. Most rehab facilities offer intervention services that can help families prepare for the intervention and facilitate entry into treatment if the person agrees to get help.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Medically supervised detox is the process of removing addictive substances from your body and managing the withdrawal symptoms in a medically supervised environment. Typically, this is the first step in the recovery process and lasts an average of 5-7 days, though the length can vary depending on your individual needs. Once your system is cleared of alcohol and drugs, you'll likely transition to an inpatient treatment program for the next phase of your recovery.
outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient programs are designed for clients who are medically stable and not at an elevated risk of relapse, including those who have already completed inpatient care. Outpatient programs typically advance clients' established treatment plans, offering continuing addiction counseling and recovery education. Clients who enter outpatient care immediately following detox may also receive medical and mental health assessments and personalized treatment plans. Most outpatient rehabs provide multiple levels of care to align with clients' unique needs.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP), also known as day treatment, allows you to receive rehab-level care while living at home. PHP treatment requires a minimum of 20 hours of treatment each week for an average of 90 days. PHP treatment plans can vary depending on your needs but typically includes relapse prevention, medication management, and evidence-based therapies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Most insurance providers fully or partially cover PHP treatment.
telehealth iconTelehealth
Telehealth in Massachusetts allows patients to receive care in one location from a specialist who is at a separate location. This allows the patient to save time and money on healthcare visits. The added convenience can make treatment more accessible.
12-step icon12-Step
Recovery models based on 12 step programs feature extensive peer coaching and emphasize personal growth as a key to sustained sobriety. Regular attendance at 12 step meetings, which are anonymous, free, and available daily, is expected. The 12 steps of recovery are based on spiritual principles and support participants in addressing the root causes of their disease, accept responsibility for their choices, and accept that which is beyond their control. Self-selected sponsors provide one-one-mentoring.

Treatments

A person who has alcohol use disorder (alcoholism) builds up a physical tolerance to alcohol. If they try to stop drinking, they experience withdrawal symptoms. Treatment is available for this condition, through alcohol rehab in Massachusetts. Treatment options include AA, detox, counseling, medication, residential programs, and outpatient treatment. Social and family support systems are crucial during and after treatment of any kind.

Addiction is a highly complex problem, and drug rehab in Massachusetts is often necessary to address it. These programs treat physical, mental, and relational issues that are involved. Treatment empowers individuals to manage these issues without the use of drugs.

mental-health iconMental Health And Substance Abuse
opium iconOpioid Addiction

In Massachusetts, substance abuse treatment programs can help to address addiction and, if relevant, any co-occurring mental health conditions. Programs include outpatient, inpatient, dual-diagnosis, and partial hospitalization. You'll receive therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy, or dialectical behavioral therapy, and sometimes complementary therapies like acupuncture and mindfulness-based therapy. By attending skills training and recovery groups you'll build a strong foundation for your recovery and strengthen your support network, increasing your chances of long-term recovery success.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

During cognitive behavioral therapy in Massachusetts, clients work with a trained counselor to identify negative thinking patterns and change them. This change in thinking has been shown to lead to changes in behavior to treat substance use and mental health disorders effectively.

If you are experiencing intense, negative emotions, dialectical behavior therapy can help you learn how to regulate painful emotions and manage the interpersonal situations that generate them. This method is often used during substance use treatment in Massachusetts to help you develop better coping skills and avoid relapse.

During experiential therapy, clients process their emotions and situations from the inside out. This is different than the outside in approach of talk therapies. Experiential methods include art, music, equine therapy, and drama, which allow creative expression and personal interaction.

Rational behavior therapy is a form of cognitive behavior therapy that is more structured and goal oriented to address irrational beliefs and thinking patterns. Using cognitive restructuring and emotional regulation techniques, you learn the tools you need to maintain long term sobriety.

Trauma therapy addresses the psychological impact of experiencing a traumatic event. You can also experience mental and emotional injury after witnessing a trauma. By identifying what triggers those responses and developing effective coping mechanisms, you can rebuild a sense of safety and trust in your environment.

Mixed Feelings on My Recent Stay - Proceed with Caution, But Invaluable Alumni Support and Dedicated Staff (Despite Challenges) My first experience at Clearbrook in April 2024 was truly life-changing, earning a 5-star review. The individual therapy with Phil, family sessions, supportive environment, and dedicated techs were outstanding. However, my recent return presented a more complex picture. One of the initial disappointments was learning that Phil, my previous exceptional therapist who provided invaluable DBT skills and family therapy, is no longer there. This was a significant adjustment as I had hoped to continue our work. Unfortunately, the individual therapy I received this time was less impactful. While my new counselor was well-intentioned, the sessions primarily involved lengthy multiple-choice questionnaires, which didn't feel like the in-depth therapy I needed. It also seems that family therapy may no longer be a standard offering. It's clear that my real, deeper work in recovery is now taking place in my current PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program) and sober living environment. On the positive side, the recovery techs continue to be incredibly supportive and helpful. Additionally, the group counseling sessions led by Stephanie, Trisha, and Alexis were genuinely beneficial. They are all skilled and knowledgeable counselors, and the groups provided a valuable space for connection and learning. I also made some wonderful friends during my stay, which significantly contributed to a positive aspect of my experience. The facility is facing clear challenges with understaffing, leading to overcrowded group sessions where it was difficult for everyone to share adequately. This also seemed to impact the consistency of aftercare planning for some individuals. It's evident that the staff is severely underpaid and overworked, which undoubtedly makes it difficult for Clearbrook to retain talented and dedicated individuals like Phil. The food remains excellent, and the addition of nightly game nights offered a fun way to connect with others, although at times it did contribute to a feeling of being more like a "summer camp with meds" than intensive therapy. If you're seeking a supportive environment with good group work and a less intensive therapeutic approach, Clearbrook might be an option for you. However, those expecting significant individual therapy and dedicated attention should be aware of the potential limitations due to staffing. It's also worth noting that my interactions with some members of the clinical staff (Brent, Lindsay, Audrey, and others) were not as positive. Crucially, I want to emphasize the exceptional support provided by Rebecca, the alumni coordinator for Clearbrook. She is truly one of their greatest assets. A couple of months ago, when I was struggling, it was Rebecca's personal care and dedication that was instrumental in my decision to return to Clearbrook. She works tirelessly to keep alumni connected through weekly virtual sessions and regular events, and her commitment is truly commendable. Teddy, the West Coast alumni coordinator, is also fantastic. Their dedication deserves significant recognition. Overall, my recent experience at Clearbrook had both positive and negative aspects. The strong group counseling, the invaluable alumni support provided by Rebecca and Teddy, and the dedication of the techs are significant strengths. However, the challenges with individual therapy and understaffing, which likely contributes to the loss of excellent staff, are important factors to consider. Potential patients should weigh these aspects carefully based on their one individual needs. If you need a stress break and want a beautiful place to get a way and refresh and recharge and make friends, Clearbrook is a great option.

My experience was absolutely amazing. The staff are very professional and always met my needs. My therapist Lindsey was always on top of everything and anything I needed at all times. My case manager Nick met my everyday needs as well and when ever I needed anything it was met. He insured my after care plan was set up effectively. Group settings are very informative especially the insight from Tricia. ClearBrook also has a wonderful cafeteria and the food is outstanding many health options and lots of choices to choose from. Executive Director John is absolutely amazing and is always around and mingles with staff and clients throughout the day which is very nice to see. I feel as though my treatment as Clearbrook met all high standards and would highly recommend to anyone. Aimee Breault

My experience at Clearbrook recovery was excellent. Both my therapist and case manager met with me frequently throughout my stay. They helped me have a productive and positive experience during my first step toward recovery, as well as setting me up for aftercare for a PHP program that best suits me. The staff holding groups were extremely helpful, touching on different strategies to help recovery as well as fully understanding my situation and what I need to do to reach my goal toward sobriety. The food was excellent. The nursing staff were very helpful throughout my stay. Highly recommend!!

When I first came to Clearbrook my intention was to keep my head down and stay in my own lane, not to make any friends and participate at a minimum. My thoughts and ideas of treatment were clouded by all my previous experiences. However it would not be even the first hour when I was pulled aside by a gentle and caring patient who saw me struggling and introduced me to the community. A strong community that was dedicated not only on working on them selves but helping others. It was an honor to be part of the community and to contribute to others who came in after me that were clearly struggling. Our community was not alone, from the tech staff and the nurses all the way up to the directors of the facility these people would bend over backwards to get you through. I can t stress enough my struggle of my first week, but it was my therapist s wise words and his sworn commitment to help my during weakest moment that put me slightly at ease. This was a commitment that he fulfilled with honor, and it would be a complete failure on my part if I did not recommend Clearbrook to anyone struggling with addiction or mental health. I have made more progress here than I have made in the entirety of my 20 years of attempting to heal.Thank you Clearbrook!!
