Independence Health Group is a licensee of Blue Cross Blue Shield. As a result, it’s better known as Independence Blue Cross. The company has operated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for over 85 years and has almost three million members. You may have Independence Blue Cross coverage through your employer, through the insurance Marketplace, or through a Medicare Advantage plan.
Does Independence Blue Cross Cover Rehab Treatment?
If you struggle with alcohol or substance misuse, getting treatment is the best way to break free. Will your insurance plan help you cover the cost?
In many cases, it will. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires all long term individual and small group plans to cover specific essential health benefits, which include mental health and addiction treatment. That includes any insurance plans related to government programs like Medicaid or Medicare, any plan available on the state Marketplace, and plans offered by employers with 50 or fewer employees.
Large group plans, like those offered by employers with over 51 employees, have the option to cover those benefits as well, but it’s not required.
It’s important to know the details of your specific plan before you commit to a treatment program. You can contact Independence Health directly to find out what your coverage specifics are and to get a list of substance use providers that are in the plan’s network.
If your plan covers substance use treatment, it will focus on the types of treatment your doctor recommends for your situation. There are many types of treatment including medical detox, residential rehab, and outpatient treatment. You may also be referred to medication assisted treatment if you struggle with alcohol or opioid misuse.

Boca Recovery was my saving grace. I was given the ultimatum that if couldn’t get clean from alcohol and marijuana, then I would be removed from my children’s lives and have no chance of getting custody back. As an addict I just didn’t see me able to do this alone. I Google searched top rehabs in Oklahoma, and came across Boca Recovery. When I spoke to a recruiter they informed me that the facility was not in Oklahoma, but he told me not to panic. If I was ready, then all I had to worry about was making sure I was going to board on my scheduled flight. It seemed too good to be true, but sure enough they delivered and made sure I made it there safely. As soon as I stepped foot into the facility the staff treated me with the best care. Not only that, but the facility was very well maintained. You’re seen by a nurse the first day, and they set you up with everything you’ll need for the detox process. All therapist and case managers work together to build the best treatment plan that suits the patient/client. Not to mention the food they provide is amazing! Thanks to Boca recovery I have passed every UA since I’ve been out, and am able to be involved in my children’s lives again. Before arriving to Boca I didn’t see any of this being possible. Highly recommend to anyone struggling with addiction!

BOCA saved my life. It offered me safety, stability, and daily expectations that I needed desperately. From the first day of entering the program the techs were welcoming, understanding, and supportive which eased my anxiety and allowed me to relax. The clinical staff I worked with is amazing and they helped me begin to understand why I needed to be there and pushed me to see that I also deserved happiness and peace of mind. The community that was created during my stay is one that is with me for life. Lifelong friendships have been created and we stay in touch to this day which has been critical for my sense of belonging. Thank you to BOCA in the city of Bloomington, Indiana; you are the starting point to my path of recovery.
81 days and counting.

This place is god sent. I have been in several trauma centers in Florida and they are the only ones that seem to get it! Great snacks, fashionable donations (including shoes), and even better Techs.
Ive been clean since the holidays due to their new beginnings of sobriety excitement and impressive alumni support system +Nikki. Thanks, Boca 😀.

Boca is an amazing place. The staff is absolutely amazing. I was fortunate enough to be able to work with Misty and Sondra. From day 1 until the day I left was a complete 180. Misty helped set me up for my next steps, and truly cares and checked in on me to make sure it was the right fit. She got to know understood me as a person and truly knew the right next steps for me to be set up for success. Highly recommend Boca.

When I decided to go into detox , I was ashamed and embarrassed for having gotten to the point of needing it, and intimidated by getting it. The minute I arrived at Boca Recovery Center, all of that went away. The entire staff, from Case Workers to Doctors, Nurses, Coordinators, Therapists, - everyone-- was so professional, kind, friendly, caring , informative, supportive , and helpful. I was so comfortable and my condition improved everyday. It was one of my best decisions to go there and be guided by them to better health. I haven't felt this strong and healthy in 5 years. I thank the people at Boca Recovery Center with all of my heart. Love and mercy to everyone.
Duane.

I love this place with all my heart and the people I got to know during my time there. The structure of the program combined with the camaraderie of the people around you is a match made in heaven. Thank you Tree House for giving me the life I live today.

Hands down the best decision I made for myself to save my life. I had no idea what to do with my life as I was spiraling into a seemingly inescapable abyss until I reached out to Treehouse. I had my reservations about going to a place like Treehouse as a member of the LGBTQ+ community but the amount of support and acceptance I received even before I committed to going was incredible. I gained the knowledge and tools that I use on a daily basis that help me live life to the fullest potential. I discovered new things about myself while going through the program by living outside of my comfort zone and allowing myself to try things I never thought I would be interested in. Treehouse was able to create a space where I could explore these new things and create strong bonds with guys that impacted my recovery in the best way possible and gave me a stronger foundation to move forward with my life. The therapy was life changing, shoutout to Chuck and Ryan, they saw something in me that I could not see for myself and helped me bring that out. The coaches were incredible as well, shoutout to Dylan, he taught me so much that went above and beyond physical fitness and weight training. Vechi and Brandon were instrumental in working with me to get me the help that I needed and incredible human beings. Words cannot express how grateful and honored I feel to have gone through and graduated from this program. If you're looking for a place that'll give you the best chance at success in recovery, this is it. You are worth it.

When I first walked through the doors at Treehouse, I was lost, broken, and trapped in a cycle of addiction that I never thought I could escape, Never! I had become a prisoner to alcohol and drugs, and my life was spiraling out of control. The guys at Treehouse, there programs, and there unwavering support, helped me find my way back to the person I was meant to be!At my lowest point, I felt like there was no hope But within the walls of Treehouse, I found Compassion, Understanding, and the TOOLS I needed to fight for my sobriety. Through counseling, support groups, and the kindness of those who had walked this path before me, I learned that I was NOT alone. I discovered strength within myself that I never knew existed, and for the first time in a long time, I believed in the possibility of change. I learned to take Responsibility for my Actions, to heal from the pain I had caused myself and others, and to embrace a FUTURE filled with HOPE. TREEHOUSE gave me the courage to rebuild relationships, to Chase Dreams I had long abandoned, and to live a life of PURPOSE and CLARITY.Today, I am proud to say that I am sober. Every morning, I wake up with a sense of Gratitude instead of dread. I have regained my health, my relationships, and most importantly, my sense of self-worth. NONE of this would have been possible without the GUIDANCE and SUPPORT that Treehouse provided me during my darkest days.I just want to say Thank You for being the place where I found healing, hope, and a second chance at life. I have and will carry the lessons I have learned within me ALWAYS, and I hope to one day give back to others who are fighting the same battle. Because of you, I am no longer just surviving, I am truly living!Much Love..

As the parents of a loved one that received treatment in this program, we cannot say enough about the Immersion Recovery program. From Residential to PHP through IOP, not only was our loved one provided with an incredible amount of support and guidance in the journey to recovery, but the amount of support we received as a family was amazing. From the very first week we received support from the therapists, family therapists and many others along the way. Weekly virtual family group is held by the family therapists Larae and Todd for families to log in and gather in a safe and welcoming space with each other and receive support. There is also a 3 day intensive family workshop for interested families to come together with their loved ones. The constant family support aspect provided for us cannot be emphasized enough and we cannot imagine going through these months without it. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to Larae, Erin, Todd and Ashley for your constant support, meetings, calls, advice, guidance and genuine care. Thank you to Sarah for answering just about any questions we ever had. We are forever grateful to you all.

I would like to give a shout out to Immersion Recovery Center. All of the Staff here takes Recovery seriously. Immersion is one of the few programs that help and guide you through a thorough and in-depth 4th Step. They have specific 4th step personnel that will sit down with you and help you open your mind to all of the resentments you have had since your childhood. This helps to build a foundation for the remaining steps and helps you get on the right track towards a successful recovery. Addiction is Life or Death! This program will help you begin a new life beyond your wildest dreams! If you are serious about recovery I recommend Immersion Recovery Center.
I had a wonderful experience here. Michelle and Jenna were incredible and made this process so much easier.
Even being away from home I felt comforted and cared for.

Danny my case manager. made me feel like I was the only person on his case load. His attention to my needs were breath of fresh air. He legit made my stay here amazing. My box spring had broke and he didn't rest until it was replace and he actually stayed late to get it done. If you struggle with addiction whitesands is the place to go. I highly recommend Shay to be your therapist and Danny to be your case manager. Also I can't forget the BHT team. Keith , Elijah, O'Shea, Anthony, Dominic, Vanessa, Joey, Rose, Rachel, Dasiah you guys made me feel safe and kept me in line and last but not lease my best friend Ryan who made sure I got to my doctor appointments between all of them they've made a great impact on my recovery I can't express truly how much you guys helped me throughout my struggles. I mean this with my whole heart. THANK YOU ALL!! But most of all I want to thank Heather. She has talked me off the ledge more times than I can count. Heather always lends her ear and with her infinite wisdom calls me on my bullsh!t, and never blew smoke up my butt. I've never met anyone who cares about patients like she does. I highly respect everyone I mentioned and I hope that if you're struggling with addiction you get the opportunity to meet these amazing humans and find your path to sobriety.

What Types of Plans Does Independence Blue Cross Offer?
Independence Health offers lots of types of plans, including individual and family plans in the Marketplace and Medicare Advantage and Medicare prescription plans. They also have insurance plans that employers can offer to their workers. If you qualify for Medicaid, you might have Independence Health coverage through Keystone First.
Blue Cross Blue Shield is known for having a strong provider network, and Independence Health has contracts with more than 49,000 providers and 180 hospitals. It’s important to understand if you have to use doctors in the network. Some plans have out of network coverage, but many don’t. Even if you can use an out of network provider it will be more expensive, so keep that in mind.
Many Independence Health insurance plans will have additional benefits. Keep an eye out for wellness programs like fitness classes and online programs. You may also have tools available in your online account that will help you understand out of pocket costs such as deductibles and copayments when you get care. Knowing your expected costs can help you feel comfortable going to rehab and breaking free from addiction once and for all.
Does Independence Blue Cross Cover Other Mental Healthcare?
Most Independence Blue Cross plans cover mental healthcare due to the requirements of the ACA, which considers mental health and substance use disorder services to be essential health benefits. However there are exceptions to the law and the extent of coverage varies based on the plan, so you need to check your plan’s coverage details.
If you have a co occurring mental health diagnosis alongside addiction your Independence Blue Cross plan may have coverage that provides integrated care for both diagnoses.
Independence Blue Cross has a special Behavioral Health team you can contact to find out more about the services covered by your plan. You can call (800) 688 1911 to reach the team.
What Inpatient Addiction Treatment Does Independence Blue Cross Cover?
Independence Blue Cross partners with Shatterproof which is an independent national non profit substance use disorder advocacy organization. They have a finder tool that covers 14 states to help you find an appropriate treatment center that accepts Independence Blue Cross.
However insurance coverage focuses on care that is considered medically necessary so it’s important to work with your doctor to get a detailed treatment plan from your doctor. This allows you to find out if you need to seek inpatient treatment and will provide evidence for insurance preauthorization.
Inpatient care is essential if you need medical detox so you have the support you need to keep you safe as your body clears itself of drugs and alcohol. Many patients transition to inpatient residential care after medical detox so they can continue getting intensive care and lay a solid foundation for long term recovery.
What Outpatient Rehab Does Independence Blue Cross Cover?
Independence Blue Cross plans may cover different levels of outpatient rehab depending on your needs and the medical necessity of the care. Outpatient treatment enables you to receive addiction treatment through individual and group therapy as well as virtual care.
Outpatient rehab is often done in stages after leaving inpatient care. The most intensive outpatient treatment is a partial hospitalization program (PHP) where you spend several hours a day for five to seven days a week at a treatment center.
Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) are a step down from PHP and you attend outside therapy sessions for nine to 19 hours per week. As you progress in your recovery you will eventually move to general outpatient treatment where you attend counseling sessions just once or twice a week.
Does Independence Blue Cross Cover Methadone & Suboxone (MAT)?
Many Independence Blue Cross plans cover methadone and Suboxone as well as Vivitrol as part of medication assisted treatment (MAT) programs. You’ll want to get your plan details so you understand if you need a referral or preauthorization before you begin treatment.
MAT is used to treat opioid use disorders and alcohol use disorders. It can help reduce cravings and ease withdrawal symptoms to help you stay stable during treatment. This helps prevent relapse while you lay a strong foundation for recovery.
The insurer offers a large network of facilities where you can receive MAT. You’ll want to check with your specific plan to see which of these facilities are in network for you.
Does Addiction Treatment Need to Be in Network?
To get the most out of your Independence Blue Cross insurance plan it helps if you use in network addiction treatment providers. Many Independence Blue Cross plans will not cover out of network care. Even if your plan does cover out of network providers it will cost you more because there are higher deductibles and copayments for out of network providers.
You can find an extensive list of Independence Blue Cross in network providers online or by calling 1 800 ASK BLUE.
Calls to any general helpline will be answered or returned by a paid advertiser.
By calling the helpline you agree to the terms of use. We do not receive any commission or fee that is dependent upon which treatment provider a caller chooses. There is no obligation to enter treatment.
