Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

When an individual is in denial about their substance use disorder, their loved ones may organize a drug intervention in California. This effort involves gently but assertively confronting the individual about their substance use and sharing how it has affected those who care about them. A professional interventionist may also attend this gathering. Their expertise with intervention services can prove helpful in guiding the conversation to a positive result.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image

Military Program

Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I will never voluntarily go to this hospital again solely because of their horrendous billing practices. I've wasted countless hours over the past three months trying to get a large refund for an overpayment on a surgery I had here. They required full prepayment on the day of surgery based on what they estimated I would owe after insurance. That would have been fine if they had handled the billing correctly afterward, but they didn't. It took them nearly two months to even finalize the claim with my insurance. In the meantime, I had to pay other related providers out of pocket because the hospital's claim was still pending and my insurance hadn't yet recognized that I'd hit my out-of-pocket maximum. When the hospital finally processed the claim, the Explanation of Benefits clearly showed they owed me a substantial refund. That's when the real nightmare began. I spent weeks leaving messages at disconnected or outdated phone numbers from their old Dignity Health site before finally reaching someone through the UCSF number. They opened a ticket for the refund and told me to expect it in two weeks, but nothing came. When I called back, I was told the refund was denied because "insurance still owed them money." My insurance company (who is in-network with St. Francis) confirmed multiple times that they'd already paid in full per their contract. Even with my insurer calling them directly, St. Francis's billing staff continued to insist otherwise, filing more "tickets" and promising supervisor callbacks that never happened. It's now been months of back-and-forth with no resolution and no refund. The lack of communication, accountability, and basic competence in their billing department is shocking, especially from a hospital affiliated with UCSF. Patients deserve far better.

Terrible experiences at this hospital. Many friends I've known have also experienced poor bedside care by doctors and nurses and a general lack of patience and concern.

I stepped from the curb onto an oil slick surface, Broke my Hip!!aaaargh!! 15 hours later, I have a pin and 2 screws holding it together, 8 weeks have passed and I'm walking without a walker or wheelchair. I'm 56 , I thought for sure it would take months to recover to the point where I could walk again, everybody I know , sees me now and are shocked how quick everything came together .I've now had two surgeries at St. FRANCIS, I'm not looking for a third, Should the need arise, I will ask to be taken to St Francis.

My brother was admitted 8/18/25. He stayed there for more than a week. He was in the 10th floor. The Filipino & white nurse with color hair was so rude and unprofessional in that floor. Even the housekeeper named Rosa. She went to clean the bathroom in his room and the moment she walked in, she was running and yelling that “there’s poop on the floor. That’s nasty I’m not cleaning that” right in front of us. She was yelling in the room and even as she went to the hallway. One nurse named Ben ended up cleaning it. I asked him why because thats her job, not his. Also for the whole week nobody went to clean my brother’s room. They make it so hard to get some blankets pillow covers sheets and pillows cases. You need to repeat multiple times. Most of the time they’re just talking and laughing in the hallway/station like they’re just in a bar or party. The nurses sometimes stand in the doorway and stare at us in the room because of our perfectly legal choice to not wear a face mask. (They claimed he was in quarantine, yet the door was left wide open his entire stay). We were always welcomed with hostile stares and blatant gossiping (whispering to each other in front of us then immediately staring). It was a terrible experience. Thank you to nurse Tenzin for actually helping us and not having an nasty attitude for no reason. We never went out of our way to cause trouble or be rude to anyone yet most of the nurses and can were so childish it was hard to believe that we were in a legitimate hospital.

I was in the ER for 2hr. I paid onsite for my bill and walked out the same day. Over 6 months later, I received a surprise bill for both the hospital and doctor via collections. They both charged me for inpatient services even though I was outpatient and walked myself into the ER and walked myself out of the ER 2hr later on the same day. No overnight services were provided. They didn't run any tests besides the usual check pulse, etc. I. Called the hospital and asked for an itemized bill but they refused and said they wouldn't send an itemized bill after it was already sent to collections. That's illegal btw. What a scam of a hospital and doctor to charge patients illegal surprise bills for services they don't even provide. As health professionals, UCSF Health Saint Francis Hospital and staff should be ashamed of themselves.
