In a world absolutely ruined by late-stage capitalism and while we all suffer the consequences health insurance has wrought unto our society. It can seem like an insurmountable obstacle as an uninsured person especially in the moment of suffering but the experience i had was unlike any other hospital visit i've ever had. Their compassion and empathy sets this place apart from the rest.Ive been between jobs and feeling like my world's been crumbling down around me; so when my recent medical emergency reared its head Eddette, Laura, and Fatima were the kind, warm professionals you really only ever hope to cross paths with and the three of them flipped my perception of hospitals with what seemed like no effort on their parts. Natural compassion, empathy, talent, and overall aura is what you always dream of experiencing at the hospital. Not that i want to go to the ER ever again, if i have to, i hope its within THEIR ER. (GIVE THESE CATS A RAISE!).Arguably this hospital serves the most diverse part of the city and it shows. This team and especially these key players, can turn your visit from a harrowing solo nightmare into a warm visit with relatives (that are hopefully not "too disappointed" in you ending up in the ER again but still love you anyway). Its got incredible vibes; the service was the best experience i could have had from a medical emergency. Thank you guys! <3And again shout out for helping me find coverage in such a dark time without even having to ask. You guys are the best!

Update. UCSf did nothing to the Dr and nurseThey said they're privately hired BSThey said in the letter what they did was fine .Not checking the IV not checking my hospital band , not giving nausea medicine upon discharge to last till my appointment in April .To not check my vitals prior to discharge to make sure my blood pressure had gone down !And tried saying well she didn't say your drug seeking she said you may . Really UCSf !!! I read it myself she treated me like sheesh because she assumed the worse when she infact saw the darn cyst herself but hey women pain doesn't matter right !!!!They gave me the medical review board and other information to go pass them I want you too know I will do that what you did was not okay . I don't even want to see obgyn in SF Bay area !! You should never treat someone in pain this way I will make sure if I have to go to news, social media , even tiktok I will . I'm tired of women with monthly cyst , and abdominal pain don't get side swipe with a excuses like I keep getting it only happens in the bay area !!!I want to say thank you to the first round of Dr and nurses before shift change happened and then a nightmare happened so after . I went in with abdominal serve pain I know I felt it . Well the second round nurse he wouldn't flush my IV before I could inform him I think my IV not working he walks out . I have no call button had a hard time getting out of bed because the pain was that bad . I go to CT scan again no one checks to see if I'm alright or check me prior CT scan I notice all the flush fluid the CT people put it was coming out . I inform the CT scan guy hey I think it been like this for a few hours I tried to tell the nurse but he walk out before I could . He calls in a different nurse because I explain the issue I was having with that nurse he like okay we'll have the nurse fix it so they can see it been like this . Then I try to stop the nurse and explain he like we're waiting for the CT scan he walks out before I finish talking . I get very upset waddle out the room asking for a Dr thinking hey they would help me . They would tell the nurse why hadn't he check my IV before giving medication why he didn't check my ER band to make sure and inform me what type of medicine I was getting . No the Dr gets mad at the patient and I hear her saying it just abdominal pain and started blaming me for DRug seeking !!! FYI I don't do drugs I'm new mother to a 8 month old child !!! . It not just abdominal pain it was ovarian cyst. They take my IV had me paperwork tell me to leave . Without having my vital signs taken for over 3 hours . And no I was not drug seeking liar I was upset how your nurse was treating me and not listening to me . This is not how you treat people you don't assume the worse !! . This is what is wrong we with San francisco health system people who need help don't get it we get punished for having pain . No women should have there ovarian cyst it is very painful. They didn't explain to me how to treat it . I went in the next day because I was puking all night and couldn't keep the Tylenol down . When I went in the next day thanks to the Dr prior the one who discharged me without explaintion of what to do when I get home . I felt like now all the staff went to those comments . But there was no notes on how I was treated by the nurse about my IV coming out . They put vital before I left which was not my vitals this not okay I reported it to UCSf I even told UCSf if you don't believe ask the ct scan look at the cameras the another nurse did come in . No he never check my IV he never flush them before mediation went in no he didn't say what he was giving me . If you're in this profession I do respect the time you spend to help people . But if your just in it for money then quit because now I'm too scared to go to the Drs because of how you treated me .

Just because it's clean doesn't mean it's great service, one particular doctor had a very jaded attitude, lot's of Privacy Act violations and HIPAA laws violated with doctor sharing patient information and be heard across room, I do not recommend this place unless you're dying and have no other option. After reading other comments, it looks like the doctor medical staff have not learned a lesson ignoring patients and taking over 2 hours to address the patient. I was refused services, and the doctor kept trying to push a certain drug that I refused to take, I felt very unsafe at this hospital, I wonder how many patients have been abused, mistreated, disrespectful, belittled. Extremely unprofessional, hire doctors with experience and compassion.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
When an individual is in denial about their substance use disorder, their loved ones may organize a drug intervention in California. This effort involves gently but assertively confronting the individual about their substance use and sharing how it has affected those who care about them. A professional interventionist may also attend this gathering. Their expertise with intervention services can prove helpful in guiding the conversation to a positive result.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Be sure to look at what they're billing you for. These people are maximizing their profits by lying about your visit time. They don't send you itemized bills, just an invoice! It took months to get an itemized bills and I caught them overcharging by 40%. PLEASE GO ELSEWHERE

The actual healthcare received was great, got assessed for a knee injury and received PT for it. All that was fine. Now when it comes to billing? Horrific service. Terrible and will never willingly go back, unless I suppose I'm in an ambulance and have no choice. If you want to get an itemized bill to figure out what you're actually getting charged for, be prepared to wait a few months while you play phone tag, then they have to mail you a form that looks like it's been Xeroxed from the 90s, you mail it back, then spend more time in limbo until they finally mail you your itemized bill. Now if you want to contest that bill for any reason, apparently you need a dispute form, that will probably be mailed to you in another month. At this point, you've likely passed the time where they will send your bill to collections, which will hit your credit score. EVEN IF you are attempting to dispute an incorrect charge, that has NO impact on them still sending your bill to collections. If you want to receive healthcare from this institution, you either better have health insurance from the gods, or be prepared to just close your eyes and pay whatever bill comes your way. An itemized bill doesn't seem like too much to ask, but oh my word apparently it is.

Update: Third time must be the TRUE charm. Came in via the ambulance after chest pain, bp 210/110, vomiting and feeling like I was surely about to check out. The ER was crowded as per usual but having to sit for nearly 3 hours because the paramedics determined I was not in stroke status after an ekg and blood test was sheer torture. On top of that hearing patients screaming while listening to the staff joke around & talk to other patients with the tact of ticks. I was greeted by my nurse Keto who didn’t introduce himself, nor offer me anything to comfort me by way of head compression nor pain meds, my bp was increasing then dipping when I did breathing exercises and attempted to calm my nerves and not focus on the pain. Upon my 3rd time saying hello, another staff in front of my door, comes in & asks can he help me. The staff goes and retrieves Keto, who comes in to explain I can’t have meds until the physician sees me. Again after nearly 3 hours, the physician Dr. Chari (whose name ironically means grace and charm in Greek)walks in & rather than read my chart, walks in and asks what can we do for you? I don’t know a spa trip to Maldives and a billion dollars in my bank account?! This was the 4th person I repeated my condition to and was in tears from pain. She then aggressively props me up in the bed because I also had blurred vision and sensitivity to light (so my eyes were closed ) and she replies that I need to open my eyes so she can exam them, that’s the only way to exam my eyes, I replied sitting up like this is making my breathing worse and it really hurts. YES! It’s the only way, she belted! Mind you I probably looked homeless by my attire because I was in bed at home and had taken a shower attempting to relax and help my bp go down so I had on sweats and a tank top and my hair was frazzled. So I’m not sure if that was the reason for the horrible care and treatment as I’ve never come in via an ambulance before EVER (during my 2 previous visits I was wearing make up & hair combed, & business clothes). Finally after pleading & crying for pain, I was given some pain meds and told I have the flu per my blood test (which was drawn immediately when I arrived). To add insult to injury, as I laid there my discharged papers were placed on my bed without explanation of why my bp is spiking!! Then Keto comes in and says there’s an ambulance coming in & I’m confused & questioned if the ambulance takes you back home (a whole brain freeze)!? No we need the bed, you have to leave. My bp is still up , I’m still in pain, & no one’s explained why!! So I inquired, to which Keto replies, likely due to stress of the illness. Likely? 200/100 is potentially a stroke so where’s the meds to take it down before dismissing me. The icing on the cake & totally feeling dismissed was realizing Keto didn’t even bother removing my heart monitor leads. I’ve never been so humiliated and offended in my life. In the end, it reduced their 5 star to a 3!! Where’s the other top tier staff when you need them?! Oan: Bella the front desk administrator was the only one to show me decency and more care than the nursing and physician staff!! She’s the only reason this review is not 1 star along with the previous visit staff members who handled their ER shifts with empathy, care, & dignity towards patients!! Previous 5 star review: My second time at this facilities’ ER & the staff are amazing! Great spirits, great bed side manner, empathetic, caring, & very professional! A special thanks to Amber in triage for her dedication, thoroughness, and kindness to get me in promptly and make me laugh, the PA Angela Kinderman, Nurses Justin and Dylan were all just so top notch explaining everything to ensure I understood my issues, treatment, and recommendations for follow up and care, they were very kind and their disposition and patience helped ease my stress in such a scary and painful situation for me. They deal with a lot and to still show quality care and empathy is what makes my heart smile! I appreciate you all at St Francis Emergency Room; thank you!!

I came here for my clients appointment and they wouldn’t let me in. This is a very weird procedure especially for a regular hospital I could see if there were victims of violence or crime like General Hospital but yea very weird and very annoying. Then they have security doing all of this not even Hospital employees.
