About Dignity Health – St. Joseph’s Behavioral Health Center

Addiction-related services available at this facility include medical detox and outpatient addiction treatment.

The medically supervised detoxification program helps individuals dealing with drug and alcohol dependency to safely and comfortably withdraw from substances. Depending on the severity, a hospital stay may be necessary. A medical team assesses each individual’s needs and discusses options available with consideration to insurance coverage, transportation, family support, and needs.

The intensive outpatient program is for individuals who have a willingness and motivation to achieve recovery and stay sober without hospitalization. Through individual and group counseling, participants learn new coping skills and behaviors. For individuals who are opioid-dependent, medication-assisted therapy using Suboxone is administered. Combining Suboxone therapy with counseling can help participants achieve long-term recovery.

This hospital nearly cost me my life. I was given a wrong diagnosis, wrong medications, an illegal hold, and unlicensed "doctors" (residents) who are completely insulated from any legal repercussions. They are used to protect the actual doctors who are never there. I challenge any of those doctors to spend 24 hours in their own facility. I gave way more patients hope than they did. What I got in return is that most of my patients rights and HIPAA were trampled on. Many people are just dropped off here because they have nowhere to go and no one to go to. THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT EVERYONE ON THIS EARTH NEEDS MEDS. It is illegal to force medication on patients. My misdiagnosis led to serious suicidal ideations (known side effect of depakote) while sticking exactly to the exorbitant amount of medication I was forced to take (2000mg per day, enough for a horse). When I left the hospital I had nothing (no drugs they had been making me take for over a week) just a horrific experience to remember. I frantically was able to piece together their own mess to save my mind from a complete withdraw from depakote (you cannot go from 2000mg to 0mg overnight). This hospital refuses to even acknowledge national/international news on PBS and 60 minutes. Propublica, class action lawsuit, district attorney, someone please step in. If any lawyers read this please reach out to me I have plenty of documentation for my case. Everyone else beware of this place. Also, good luck finding anyone who will take medi-cal outside of the hospital in California. Therefore your trouble is just beginning when you leave the hospital. They literally punished me by keeping me the maximum legally allowed for calling out the illegal activity in the hospital and challenging them in court. I have 13 years of software engineering experience and literally wrote the book on systems that preserve HIPAA and patients rights while this hospital cannot even digitalize basic information and has doctors who do not know the difference between PII and PHI. Dr Javid should have his license challenged and has a major conflict of interest. Im sure he lives in a lovely mansion while the hospital is completely disgusting and falling apart with roaches and floor coming up. Clearly this hospital is in the pockets of big pharma and also extracts extraordinary fees from insurance plans. In my personal opinion this is a pill mill for zyprexa and depakote. Most of this is paid for with Medi-cal and is YOUR TAX DOLLARS AT WORK. Some responsible patients they try to get to roll over on social security for the rest of their life! I challenged this all the way up to superior court of San Juaquin county and was put in a legal blindside where I only had crayons and 5 minutes to meet with my public defender. Legal proceedings should not be augmented like this. Patients have a constitutional right to a fair trial, to an attorney, or to the ability to defend themselves. Unfortunately the hospital has a close personal relationship with everyone in court except the patient, and illegally prevents the patient from representing themselves which I was fully capable of doing. Absolutely corrupt and I may bring this to state court. I would have walked but my "wallet" not being at my moms house prevented me from getting discharged. Even this judge should face investigations. My "doctor" (resident) violated my patient privacy rights and direct written notice that my private health information cannot be shared (HIPAA) and he did it anyways and this corrupt judge sustained it. That is ILLEGAL. I also had to give up my 2nd amendment for 5 years just to challenge this hospital. What an unbelievable travesty of justice. Let me just call it before they do this is not a manic rant, they do not have any idea what they are doing and refuse to acknowledge law, science, and fault.

Would you like to have the worst moment of your life be compounded by sitting in a room all day with one to zero groups going over the same topics for redundantly? Would you like to have a therapist come in and after barely getting to know you tell you you should stop loving your own mother because he “says it how it is”?. Would you like to be forced to stay longer after you hit yourself from pure frustration caused by not receiving any help and being isolated to then just be even more isolated as some sort of punishment? If so step right up! This is the spot for you!

When I got to this place back in July 2023 it was on the weekend of my birthday. Whenever I was younger my mom would 5150 me on just about every birthday. When I was hospitalized here Dr. Fox would let me play my guitar and when I was given the privilege to play guitar I would divide my 15-30min sessions with my guitar and let others play guitar. What was really good was the food and dinning area. My electric guitar and line6 podgo was the first time staff had seen any like that to come into the hospital and I was asking for music theory material to be printed out and the nurses were always printed out material for me. I started Stemvasmah therapy which was science, technology, engineering mathematical, visual arts sound-music arts, and humanities, I would be asking all patients on my unit for 3 different topics and the nurses were always printing out the paperwork for my lessons I have taught the patients. I remember going to rec therapy all the patients requested songs all the songs that I like. Overall this is heaven for those who are broken All OF THE FORMER PATIENTS THAT ARE GOING TO GIVE BAD REVIEWS,..... I GOT NEWS THE LIES YOU HAVE BEEN TELLING WILL BE REPORTED PRIVATELY AND RESPECTFULLY. I HAVE LOVE FOR MHTS, I NURSES, first responders, doctor's psychiatrist. AND lawn enforcement and paramedics and fire Crew. I have no bad memories of being hospitalized.

Accepted Insurance

Dignity Health – St. Joseph’s Behavioral Health Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

When an individual is in denial about their substance use disorder, their loved ones may organize a drug intervention in California. This effort involves gently but assertively confronting the individual about their substance use and sharing how it has affected those who care about them. A professional interventionist may also attend this gathering. Their expertise with intervention services can prove helpful in guiding the conversation to a positive result.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in California is a method that therapists often use for the effective treatment of substance use disorders. It is based on the principle that substance abuse stems from unhelpful ways of thinking and patterns of behavior, which can be changed by helping the individual learn better ways of coping.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

For clients who are struggling with ambivalence toward change, motivational interviewing in California can help strengthen their commitment to change. Using a conversational method, the therapist helps you explore your motivations and empowers you to make the changes you desire.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

While in rehab treatment, you may work on developing various life skills to help you in long term recovery. These may include resilience, interpersonal skills, and self awareness. The focus will be on developing healthy habits for self care and relationships so you have the skills you need to manage day to day life.

I’ve been here twice. It’s been 4 months and I still reminisce on my time spent here. I’ve been to a psych ward in Sacramento and it is nothing compared to this one. The staff here for the most part generally cares for the patients. Thank you to all of the employees who helped me especially the chefs (cuz the food was great) and Bradley.

Response from the owner
Thank you for the positive comments and review! We will share them with our staff. Take care 🧡

I was a patient here and the staff are really nice but when it comes to the building itself it’s very old has carpet everywhere and it smells to be very honest . Only 1 shower room for all of the patients to shower in it didn’t seem like the whole building was being cleaned 24/7 like I’ve seen Sierra vista being cleaned all the time . The rooms are small and their was no groups or daily activities to be included in :( I was only there for about 3 days but the building definitely needs remodeling and shower room in every room like other psychiatric hospitals have

This facility should be closed down or someone needs to go in and fire all employees and rebuild it into the kind of facility that WANTS TO TREAT MENTAL HEALTH PATIENTS WHO ARE ALREADY STRUGGLING. Instead the people working here make things far worse. They aren't "helping" anyone. The staff is completely rude, abusive and they basically bully patients. Patients that arrive at this supposed "mental health facility" need calm, caring, and competent professionals. THIS IS A COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY AND THE INDIVIDUALS WORKING HERE ARE GETTING PAID TO FURTHER MISTREAT PEOPLE THAT NEED HELP. SOMEBODY DO SOMETHING! THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON FOR THIS TO BE THE CASE!

This facility deserves a class action lawsuit, based on my own experiences and the other reviews I've been reading. They discharged my friend who is gravely disabled, and sent him in a taxi to a homeless shelter that didn't even have a bed available. He doesn't have ID, a jacket, a single penny to his name, and no place to stay. It is one of apparently many examples of flagrant negligence by case management, along with the entire staff. Absolutely inexcusable, irresponsible patient care.

I love this place. I actually miss it. U see not everyone is doing well, and I don't care if your a mental patient, a drug addict, a alcoholic, or u had a nervous breakdown, it's the best place to be and safe. I have a friend that I want to go there, I'm praying for him. His family would love it. I've known this place for years. And the people that work there still. It's sad to hear about people that had a bad experience,. God knows I've had many but it was because of them. I went for a reason. I have left on my own and left when I finished my time there. So God bless the staff I know, and always thinking of you.

Have been sent here twice, both times the staff have been every respectful. They were very aware of how I was feeling. They checked in with me. When I was placed in a less then desirable unit they made sure I felt safe and secure. They also moved me as soon as a bed as available in the other unit. No, this isn't where I want to be and yes, place is my first choice if I ever need them again. Thank you for all you do.
