So when I was at Southwestern, it was OK to be honest, but some of the care wasn’t the best. The first full day that I was there I was neglected physically because I was having nausea, I couldn’t see straight and I could barely walk and no one helped me, but one nurse name is Anitra. She was very kind. I liked her the entire time I was there. There were some good nurses some bad nurses and most of them were helpful. The therapists were mostly nice. Some of them weren’t the best at doing their job, but they were good enough to the point where it did help a little bit in my experience. It didn’t help me the best and it didn’t really give me the help that I fully needed to get better. It did help me learn coping skills, and it did help me overall, but there were mice in the room at some point, there were roaches. There were all sorts of bugs and bedbugs, some girl had lice at some point and the rooms were mediocre at best and the beds were completely plastic. The pillows were plastic. The rooms were freezing cold. The windows never stayed open and all the windows were blacked out so you couldn’t see out of them so you had no clue what time of day it was if you were doing R&R. R&R wasn’t bad, I actually enjoyed R&R because I could go to sleep if I was tired. I could read if I needed some quiet and you can go to early R&R or you can go to bed early. Whenever you choose early R&R, it was usually around two and early bedtime was around eight. Mandated bedtime was 9 or 9:30 which is relatively normal. My experiences with the nurses weren’t necessarily bad, most of the nurses were very nice and very respectful. They never disrespected me honestly. One of my favorite parts about it though was gym or group therapy. The groups were always fun, especially with Miss Anitra, groups were very interactive when it came to Miss A, who was night staff, and the night staff was usually very nice, but some of them weren’t the best to be honest, but overall, this place wasn’t horrible. It just wasn’t the best and it didn’t help me in the way that I needed at the time, but I did help me learn some coping skills that did help a lot :)

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
military-program thumbnail image

Military Program

Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
young-adult-program thumbnail image

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Southwestern adolescents unit was very focused on helping the kids. The first night I got there, the night staff did a very well job at making sure I was okay. Out of any other facility I've been to, this place was by far the best. The schedule was perfect, in fact I was on such a good schedule when I was there, I came home and stayed on a schedule. I had therapy once a week and my therapist was absolutely awesome, not only did she help me, but she helped my parents figure stuff out too during family therapy. The food was something else, I swear the whole day I only thought about how good the food was, lol! The only thing I feel like should be different is the way they medicate and how much medication they put people on. But genuinely, southwestern was great, the staff, therapists, especially the food. If I'm ever in need of help again, no doubt I would try to come back here.

I went there when I was 9 and 11 and 14 my time there was helpful until I realized all they do is label you and drug you up on medicine that makes you feel numb and dead inside I wish they would've help better the kids and teens and adults who actively seek help to try and fix themselves deserve so much more and be treated like a they are human beings not wild animals.

please please PLEASE do not send your child here, this is coming from another child that went here, i watched a kid get DRAGGED into a room by the back of his shirt because he didn’t wanna eat fruit because he was SICK? we weren’t allowed to make friends, i tried to make a friend with someone and we got SEPARATED because we were best friends? oh don’t forget the time i woke up at midnight to hear someone screaming for their mom, don’t forget the time i got yelled at (i was ten. TEN.) because i wasn’t allowed to sit with my best friend (apparently another staff said that to everyone BUT me) and i didn’t know? she yelled at me saying “you’re 10, you should remember” when she didn’t even TELL ME? and all we do is eat, school, lunch, yard, and dinner, and guess what we do? just watch movies. i also got INSULTED my first night there by a staff member because of my self harm SCARS?? she said “you know these scars stay forever, right?” basically saying that they’re ugly. i got stripped while she had to take photos of my scars. there were some nights where i couldn’t even sleep with my door shut? the only nice staff members there was a nurse. oh let’s talk about that one time i got forgotten to the point it gave me anxiety because i was scared? they didn’t even knock on my door to check on me for 5 HOURS. and i just came out my room, like nothing happened. i hated it so much i LIED to get out, and now i have freedom to say. don’t forget when they told me and my mom i was gonna get discharged and the day i was going to; I DIDNT. we have a room for two people , TWO, yet me and my roommate still had take turns SLEEPING IN THE HALLWAY. where the lights aren’t even turned off, and for the love of god i cannot sleep with them on. I can’t HUG my friends, and we weren’t even allowed to give out our numbers for when we do get discharged to STAY IN CONTACT. don’t forget when i heard screaming from “the quiet room” everyday. oh! i also heard someone arguing LOUDLY (two STAFF by the way) during a time where you were SUPPOSED to be QUIET. the blankets wont even stop you from killing yourself, neither are the curtains because we got yelled at for taking out the curtain magnets. oh, and they tried to give me another medication after mine was working JUST FINE. but it thankfully my mom said no. once, i tried connecting with the staff, and i said “you look like my aunt!” with a smile on my face and she said “okay? good for me?” she was just so MEAN. don’t forget the time i had to leave my door open because i was TERRIFIED of being left behind AGAIN. that shouldn’t be a problem when my NAME is on the DOOR. letting you KNOW someone is IN that room. i was SHY. i got yelled at for not remembering something. don’t forget when they cut my nails and it overstimulated me for DAYS because of how short they were? every time i touched them i felt my skin and it was uncomfortable. don’t forget when i was told to put my hoodie back on in GYM (i was sweating) and got yelled at because i was wearing a TANK TOP?? and got taken back to my room to change because APPARENTLY “little boys are perverts” WHAT. they were 10 AND UNDER. okay here’s some more if your still reading it! one time someone farted in the room, and the lady sprayed PERFUME in the room, mind you, i’m autistic and it bugged me SO BAD i couldn’t breathe, but i had to wait till they dismiss us to go into our rooms, so i was stuck there, smelling a perfume.
