About West Oakland Health Council

West Oakland Health Council is a community based clinic in Oakland, California. Adults can access outpatient care and medication assisted treatment for mental health conditions and substance abuse. Their outpatient programs are specifically for those with referrals from their medical provider.

You’ll have access to individual therapy to work through the barriers hindering your recovery. They give you the tools to face these challenges head on while building coping skills to sustain sobriety. Additionally, you’ll benefit from care coordination. These services connect you with community resources and support for your recovery journey.

They tailor their medication assisted treatment toward people with opioid use disorder. This program provides group and individual counseling coupled with daily medication. You could be prescribed medications, like Suboxone or methadone, to manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings and promote long term sobriety.

One thing I like about them is their specialty mental health care services. They provide flexible options in the office, at home, in the community, and during school visits. They have different programs for adults, children, and adolescents with moderate to severe mental health conditions. I think this option is super helpful, especially if you find traveling to and from treatment challenging.

I've been going to this clinic since I was a child, so I called them because I needed to see a doctor. I was told the earliest appointment isn t until June. They told me to go to the emergency room instead. Mind you, this isn t really an emergency, but I definitely need to be seen before June. I asked if they have urgent care, and they said no the emergency room is my only option. The lack of care and concern in that phone call was painfully obvious. On top of that, when you leave a message, they never call you back. There was even one time I had an appointment, came back that Monday to pick up my prescription, and they acted like they had no record of me ever being there. They said I d have to make another appointment.I ve never seen such incompetence in the healthcare field in my life.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one’s body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Individual therapy for drug addiction includes a customized treatment plan that considers your history and life circumstances. During your therapy sessions, the therapist helps you uncover underlying issues and triggers for addictive behavior that support a holistic approach to recovery.

During group therapy, men and women learn to express their emotions openly in a non judgmental setting. This helps you process your feelings and reduces feelings of social isolation that are often associated with addiction.

I called becuase I'm looking for a primary care provider. I was able to schedule my daughters to be seen quickly while mines was scheduled out in March to update my immunization records, and a physical for school. Which now makes sense, they offer many services so I can tell they are busy. The clark that supported me today was kind and took her time with scheduling. I took away a star because the platform "My chart" does not have an app to download which causes it some confusion when seeking to use it. I'm looking forwards to seeing how things go in January 2025 at this new facility.

I used to love this place. My old doctor at the Watson center was amazing but unfortunately she passed away so I was sent back to the East Oakland health center. Everything was going well until they changed to Baywell. Since then the appointments are being pushed out three months. The medical assistants give you misinformation and nobody seems to know anything. It’s so unfortunate because I’ve been coming here for 20 years. Now I have to switch my providers. The community will be the one to ultimately suffer behind whatever merger or whoever bought it. Do better Baywell
