About First Nations Community Healthsource — Truman Healthcare Center

First Nations Community Healthsource is a federally qualified healthcare provider that serves New Mexico’s urban Indians. They offer integrated and culturally sensitive care that promotes the general wellbeing of tribal communities. They have several clinics in Albuquerque including this one.

Adolescents and adults can receive targeted behavioral health care here. This includes substance use treatment, mental health support and integrated care for co-occurring conditions. They offer intensive outpatient substance use treatment for adults. This program focuses mainly on evidence based practices like moral reconation therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavioral therapy.

These proven models are delivered in a group setting to help you break harmful habits of substance misuse and build coping skills to avoid relapse. A thorough intake assessment enables the care team to tailor therapy to your unique recovery needs. They may offer trauma informed care using models like EMDR and seeking safety to help you process past trauma that triggers substance misuse.

Your tailored treatment pla in this facility will involve medication assisted treatment if you’re dealing with opioid addiction. This technique uses FDA approved meds to curb cravings and reduce withdrawal symptoms. The facility integrates complementary therapy like acupuncture and massage into its broader recovery program. This is to facilitate “whole person” healing. They even offer traditional healing and counseling.

Alcohol education classes, AA meetings and drug screening are vital aspects of the program. The latter is conducted to monitor progress and ensure compliance with treatment. Psychiatric care like medication management is provided to support folks with co-occurring disorders. Their wraparound services may include help with stable housing, employment and educational support via case management.

The facility provides many ancillary services that are directly and indirectly linked to addiction or substance misuse. This includes educational classes and prevention programs for domestic violence and sexual assault. They partner with Sandia Resort and Casino to provide gambling addiction screening and treatment. It’s a comprehensive behavioral health program that fosters healthy and productive living for community members.

Zuni Road is a busy corridor with easy access to private and public transportation. ART and ABQ RIDE have bus routes within the area which is a great option for locals coming to the facility for treatment. The I-25 corridor provides an easy route to the facility for those driving north or south through Albuquerque. The facility is within three to five miles of the University of New Mexico, Nob Hill and Albuquerque BioPark for reference.

After being a victim of family violence and under the threat of eviction, I attempted to make an urgent appointment with my "therapist," Chana, by calling and leaving a voicemail. Three days passed without a callback. In turn, I sent an email. A week passed, and I called to speak to their patient advocate/ombudsman to file a complaint against Chana. My call was passed from person to person several times. Unbelievable that they had never heard of such a person. I even sent a complaint through FNCH's website but never received a response. The bottom line is that FNCH doesn't have a person to help patients with FNCH employee issues and has at least one employee who turns her back on patients in dire need, and her name is Chana. She shouldn't be titled a therapist if she doesn't honestly care about people in need. FNCH only has social workers for therapists. When did social workers become qualified to help with mental health issues!!! Pathetic of her and FNCH.

I was very surprised by this facility, they said the people start lining up at 7am but I didn't see anyone in line when I got there and that was at 7:30 so I had hoped it wouldn't be an all day deal. And that it was but in a good way. I got to meet Adam which is now my PCP for a short time, he will be transferring for personal reasons in a few months, but enough of that. Turned out to be one of the most successful days of my life, my PCP actually cared actually listened, actually looked me in the eye when he asked me questions or made suggestions, I actually felt like I was on the same level as he was, and that felt amazing. It didn't feel like he was above me like some providers tend to seem just from being at an authority level for so long. We actually had a conversation about my pain, my feelings and my state of mind. This may seem like a little exaggeration but if you have ever experienced chronic pain it's everything. I hate to see him go because the trust will be short lived and I struggle with change, but I think to be able to feel security with your Doctor at any level is a gift. So thank you Adam, I hope your transfer is successful for you and your family I know you both need it, I had a couple of daycare's in the very place your going and believe me it felt good to be the helper instead of the one being helped. Good Luck

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Each drug rehab in New Mexico offers unique amenities and treatment methods. Common aspects of treatment include group and individual counseling, recreational therapy, medication management, and healthy living. Aftercare is often provided to prevent relapse.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I started going to this clinic because is the closest one to where I live , in the last two days I went there to checkout my face, both days I was left there waiting to be seen, , first day I did exactly what I was told to do , get there between 8-4 , and I’ll be seen for the nurse, second day (yesterday) I have an appointment at 2 pm , I get there 20 minutes before to check in, I got called to get in to the room , after I get there, I spent an hour and 10 waiting for the supposed doctor to come see, and this person never showed up, I left , I have to go back to work , ok I get it , it is a clinic were homeless people are seeing, but not all the people who goes there are homeless, the receptionist are rude , treat you like you’re a trash, I don’t know the names , but I can point out in front of the director of the clinic if is needed, to me this clinic are stealing money from the medical insurances , because if I make an appointment at 2 pm is to be seen at time , (and I get I’m not the only one),but don’t wasted people time who have stuff to do, the excuse they give you , the doctor are with a patient, if you gave a time to come see, is because you’re available to see me , I don’t have to wait for you an hour and 10 minutes, and who knows if you really showed up because I left , that’s not a hospital , where the doctor are really busy, where any complications can happen at any moment, this is neighborhood clinic…..if you’re waiting for them , and they never come see, and still charged to the insurance, that have a lot to said about this clinic, go there if you wanted to get treated worse than a trash, and be charged for no reason

I had the experience of speaking with Adam, my new physician and was absolutely delighted by the fact that he is so thorough! He did more for me in 30 minutes than any other doctor I’ve ever met! Would absolutely recommend him to anyone in need of a doctor, and my friends n family!! Indeed I did!

Your agency must undergo immediate re-training on patient-centered practices. As a former patient, I witnessed unprofessionalism within your organization, and after revisiting the clinic today, it's clear that nothing has improved. I strongly recommend removing ‘Community’ from your name, as it fails to reflect any genuine connection to the community!

I have been in other parts of the country where there is so much less for My People & our recognizing rare cultural uniqueness helped us to be Well healed. My overall experience is 5 Stars full of gratitude ,but my only "WISH" is that stating in the record that suicide depression is a requirement for being assisted with homeless funding.I object to that style of business. I think that could be done easy in a more significant way, instead of desperation as a resort to assist. Most people just need rent help just once. Not to Die $.Otherwise, I am very greatful for First Nations. And anything can be improved.I like would like to see a 2-3 story parking lot building be built across the street from the 5608 Zuni rd SE Clinic. For the safety & security of staff & clientle.-Tatanka
