I came in through the ER with severe abdominal pain and ended up staying two days for an emergency appendectomy. Despite the illness, it was one an incredibly positive experience. Dr. Michael Tornwall, the surgeon that performed my surgery, was calm, confident, and genuinely invested in my outcome from surgery through follow-up. My inpatient nurses Zakaria and Jen were superstars — attentive, warm, and caring to the point that it felt like family. But they weren’t outliers. Without exception, every person I encountered — dietitian, phlebotomist, radiology, surgical team, the rest of the nursing staff, recovery team, cleaning staff — all were kind and professional. Not one weak link. My room was spotless, quiet, and private. The cleanliness throughout was exceptional. My care was outstanding and I couldn't have asked for better treatment. We should all feel lucky to have such a great asset right here in our hometown.

I met with a Psychologist here twice for counseling, he was pretty good and I was very excited to start EMDR therapy. However, that ended when I had the worst experience with a Psychiatrist that I have ever had. Not only did she NOT mention that she would be training someone during my visit or ask if it was okay. She proceeded to talk over me, interrupt me, have zero empathy or care at all. It was almost like she just role played me to make an example for her student. This experience has left me in such despair about the medical industry, I will find it very challenging to seek help ever again. There are more details I could add. However, I hope no one else ever has to go through that experience, it was horrible and not good at all for someone's mental health. Conveniently enough, the hospital has no way by phone or website to file a complaint. AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Absolutely amazing experience from start to finish. The staff was caring, professional, and genuinely kind the entire time. Wait times were short, everything was very clean, and the level of support went above and beyond — they even helped arrange a ride back to my Airbnb. Special thanks to Joy, Dr. Zitler (sorry if I misspelled it), and Lt. Sean for making a stressful situation so much easier. You can really feel the small-town care and compassion here. Thank you all again for everything.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I fell and broke my arm while on vacation in Hocking Hills. It was later at night and we decided it was best to go to the emergency room instead of waiting for urgent care to open next morning. When we walked in to the ER, I was questioning our decision to come here as there was no one in the waiting room and there was not a receptionist present. However, there was a check-in kiosk that was very easy to access. We were quickly called back and met with the sweetest staff. I was so impressed by their care and service! They were having a very eventful night in the ER when we arrived, but I always felt attended to. I was able to get X-rays and my arm was splinted. We arrived shortly before midnight and were heading back to our cabin by 1:30am. I had a follow up appointment with an orthopedic surgeon back home and was told they did a great job splinting the arm to protect my injury. Very thankful for the team here and all they do to serve the HH community. Dr. Green took care of me and she was so down to earth and sweet. Also shout out to Josh the paramedic, who splinted my arm perfectly!

Atrocious and daft sums up the doctor that was on call in the ER late Thursday 6/4 into the morning of Friday 6/5. My mom had a serious medical episode for 4-5 hours. The doctor actually tried to send her home before she was fully conscious and before she could walk or even talk. Didn’t do anything thoroughly. My mom just had surgery 2 weeks prior to this and all he did was order 3 simple tests and said she’s good to go. 10/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND OR TRUST THIS HOSPITAL. This will not be the last you hear of me HVCH.
