About the Facility

Since 1975 Horizon Village Terrace House has been a nonprofit rehab situated in Buffalo, New York, that specializes in providing healing and hope for those dealing with substance abuse and co-occurring mental health issues. This addiction treatment center is a proven leader in behavioral health and addiction treatment and provides individuals with a safe space for withdrawal from substances like alcohol, opiates, and benzodiazepines.

At Horizon Village Terrace House, the role of the family is crucial, which is why this rehab strongly advocates for family involvement in drug and alcohol addiction recovery. This addiction treatment center also notes the importance of continuing support after treatment which is why they help individuals learn how to sustain ongoing recovery. Before clients can get to this stage, they need to attend one or more of the following programs:

The Horizon Village Terrace House outpatient program includes counseling and medication assisted treatment (MAT) as part of its service offerings for families, youths, and adults. The outpatient program provides adolescents and adults battling substance abuse with the medicines needed, like Vivitrol, buprenorphine, and suboxone, to reduce cravings and symptoms. Certified medical specialists administer these medications to those enrolled in counseling as part of the outpatient program.

The inpatient residential treatment program at Horizon Village Terrace House is adult only at this facility. It specializes in treating severe substance use disorders and offers a carefully designed rehab that keeps patient needs and comfort in mind. The services offered in the inpatient residential treatment program are individualized and focus on medical, spiritual, psychological, physical, social, and environmental needs.

Substance Abuse Crisis Stabilization Services are provided at Terrace House for those with substance abuse disorders that need immediate support in a 24 hour residential setting. Those who are accepted for crisis stabilization are given support, observation, counseling, nursing, and medical care to ensure stabilization after drug or alcohol withdrawal.

clipboard-medical iconMedically Assisted Detox

Medical detox involves weaning your body off of addictive substances in a medically supervised environment. If you’ve become dependent on alcohol and/or drugs, quitting on your own can be uncomfortable and even dangerous. In medically assisted detox, a team of licensed medical professionals will help manage potential withdrawal symptoms, ensuring that you’re as safe and comfortable as possible. This process typically takes about 5-7 days, although the length will depend on your individual needs.

bed-front iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

truck-medical icon24-Hour Clinical Care

At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

house-medical iconAftercare Support

When you are discharged you will be referred to the appropriate level of care for your needs, which may include continued stay in stabilization in a residential setting, a referral to an inpatient rehabilitation program, a more intense residential treatment program such as Horizon Village, or outpatient services. They stress the importance of continuing treatment post-discharge and the development of an effective relapse prevention plan.

Animal Therapy

Therapy dogs are trained to provide affection and comfort to patients. They fulfill an emotional void that is often drained by substance use or mental health disorders. Therapy dogs can be found in many breeds and sizes; however, Golden Retrievers are often used due to their calm demeanor and patient disposition

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Creative Arts Therapy

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Family Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Individual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Rational Behavior Therapy

Rational Behavior Therapy (RBT) is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy meant to be short-term and comprehensive. It was intended to help clients become more self-sufficent and move forward without the need for expensive, ongoing therapy. It includes an emotional self-help method called “rational self-counseling,” the purpose of which is to give clients all the skills needed to handle future emotional issues by themselves, or with significantly less professional help.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.
