About Saint Annes Hospital – Behavioral Health

Saint Anne’s Hospital is part of the Brown University Health organization. The hospital offers inpatient and outpatient mental health services and is located in Fall River, Massachusetts. For clients who need intensive substance use disorder (SUD) and addiction treatment, they can refer you to one of their other treatment centers.

Specialized Treatment for Children and Adults

The behavioral health and psychiatry program helps children and adults through its inpatient programs. The program offers special outpatient programs for children and teens at the Fernandes Center for Children and Families, also located in Fall River.

The specialty treatment programs at the Fernandes Center range from early childhood programs (ages 2-5) to elementary programs (6-13) to adolescent programs (14-19). These are therapy clinics that provide treatment for problematic behaviors typically emerging in these developmental stages.

Integrated Health Treatment Experience

Because this is a full service hospital, clients receive integrated treatment services. In addition to psychiatric services, the hospital has emergency, surgical, and diagnostic services, as well as other specialty services.

The hospital has received multiple accreditations and awards for various specialty services. These include Leapfrog’s “Straight A” Hospital Safety Award. Only 12 US hospitals have received the award since it began in 2012.

Safe Therapeutic Environment

The facility offers a secure and safe environment. Clients are in semi private or private rooms. There are dining facilities on site where clients receive nutritious meals.

Comfortable day rooms provide relaxing group therapy spaces. There are outdoor courtyards where clients can get some fresh air and spend time in a healing environment. Feedback from clients highlights attentive care and a supportive and compassionate staff.

(FALSE IMPRISONMENT) (FALSE IMPRISONMENT) (FALSE IMPRISONMENT) On September 15th, 2025 I was unfortunately transported to the emergency room from Carvalho Grove rehabilitation center in Fall River for imaging on my neck because I was having pain. I arrived at 1:15 pm, and discharged at 7:45 pm During that time I was waiting for transport back to the nursing home, and it took forever. In that period of time I was asking the nursing staff when will my ride will arrive, they stated, they didn't know. At 9:00 pm, I was beyond being patient, so I started to exit the emergency room, to book a ride with Lyft. Immediately, I was man handled by a security guard using force to stop me from leaving. He was grabbing my arms and deflecting himself against me in an effort to hold me against my will. He stated that I couldn't leave and to get back inside! A nurse came to the exit telling me you better get back on the stretcher.. I was beside myself! Actually frightened! (False imprisonment).. I am of sound mind and only 67 years old without any cognitive issues My civil rights were violated, and it's a criminal offense to hold someone against their will! Security footage will prove that. I contacted the director of security, who was harshly rude, and uncaring. She stated that she was going to investigate the matter, but haven't heard a word. I have 2 emails addressed to her, S Croft! I have hired an attorney to pursue litigation..My attorney will be contacting law enforcement as well! PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS HOSPITAL THEY'RE NOT UP TO DATE WITH THE MODERN HOSPITAL STANDARDS!! I’m never one to leave a review but doctor Catherine is an absolute angel. My 1 year old spiked a fever of 103 and he is the most social baby ever. Still managed to be in a good mood and wave and talk to everyone lol but to assess him is complicated to say the least. Dr Catherine was so patient and kind, even let the baby play with her stethoscope to distract him. She addressed our concerns was quick and painless! Not only was she an excellent doctor but an incredible human being. As parents we were so grateful for being handled with the most professionalism and kindness possible. Thank you so much Dr Catherine !

Accepted Insurance

Saint Annes Hospital – Behavioral Health works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

Due to various health issues that substance abuse causes, 24-hour clinical care in Massachusetts is often a necessary part of treatment. Individuals may be suffering from infections, illness, or organ damage. Having 24-hour care available ensures that these physical problems are treated along with the psychological effects of addiction. Once individuals complete detox and are medically stable, this intensive level of supervision ends, and the next phase of treatment can begin.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

A person who has alcohol use disorder (alcoholism) builds up a physical tolerance to alcohol. If they try to stop drinking, they experience withdrawal symptoms. Treatment is available for this condition, through alcohol rehab in Massachusetts. Treatment options include AA, detox, counseling, medication, residential programs, and outpatient treatment. Social and family support systems are crucial during and after treatment of any kind.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

In Massachusetts, substance abuse treatment programs can help to address addiction and, if relevant, any co-occurring mental health conditions. Programs include outpatient, inpatient, dual-diagnosis, and partial hospitalization. You'll receive therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy, or dialectical behavioral therapy, and sometimes complementary therapies like acupuncture and mindfulness-based therapy. By attending skills training and recovery groups you'll build a strong foundation for your recovery and strengthen your support network, increasing your chances of long-term recovery success.

Programs

seniors-program thumbnail image

Seniors Program

Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
adult-program thumbnail image

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

"I had a very positive experience at Saint Anne’s Hospital. From the moment I arrived, the staff were professional, friendly, and attentive. The check-in process was smooth, and I never felt rushed or overlooked. The nurses and doctors were compassionate and took the time to explain each step of my care clearly. The facilities were clean, well-organized, and felt very safe. I especially appreciated how the team followed up on my concerns promptly and made sure I was comfortable throughout my stay. Overall, Saint Anne’s Hospital provided excellent care, and I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking a supportive and professional medical environment."

I went into the emergency department for shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, and vomiting. I was told to sit in the waiting room after check in. They took me in about 10 minutes later and did bloodwork and an ekg. Never gave me the ekg results and sent me back to the waiting room where I sat for 2 hours. During that time no one was called back for a room, only to be triaged and sent back to the waiting room. The waiting room was freezing. The ac was on like it was 100 degrees outside in September. I could not wait any longer. I finally went up to the desk and they told me there were 4 people ahead of me. None of which in 2 hours were brought back to a room. So I left. The receptionist could have cared less. I wouldn’t say I received great service from anyone but the nurse who did my ekg. Even the one who initially called me in seemed to act like it was a bother. No bedside manner at all. This is by far the worst experience in an emergency room I’ve ever had. I’ve never waited so long and seen no one taken in. Completely unacceptable. I will be going to Charlton before I step foot back in st Anne’s.

The staff in the ER is incredible!! We endured nine hours of anxiety and physical discomfort. However, Saint Anne's team of providers greatly mitigated and ameliorated a very difficult situation with their attention, professional proficiency, compassion, and kindness. I would particularly like to commend Robert and Dr. Ross for going above and beyond. I would mention others but cannot recall all of their names. Should you ever suffer the profound misfortune of requiring urgent, emergency medical care, direct your ambulance to Saint Anne's.

Keep reading to see what my husband recorded the staff saying about him in his endoscopy! Brought my husband in for what i thought may have been a seizure. Turned out he had an ulcer so large it was causing internal bleeding and in turn delerium, loss of consciousness for days, and potassium levels so low he needed telemetry unit as well as what the staff thought was meningitis but they were too incompetent to get a valid spinal tap to know for sure so they just treated him for it to be safe. (I heard ER doctor Victoria fox say, not realizing i was the wife down the hall, "the patient is too fat for a spinal i can't get it but I'll try again". I refused to let her touch him again. For the record my husband is 6 ft. 200lbs. Hardly "too fat to spinal".) Then after all his diagnoses that kept him there 3 weeks, they had the audacity to call his reason for hospitalization "drug use" because he was positive for weed and benzos. I had thought they were treating him poorly and less than, then the nurses said right in front of us "reason for visit is drug use" and i absolutely lost it. We had to have a nice nurse suggest we demand a new doctor because they kept gaslighting his pain. They finally gave in and gave an endo. My husband secretly recorded under his pillow for the procedure. While he was unconscious they were taking so badly about him and how he's a drug addict and the procedure would be a "waste of time on a junky". (I guess taking an ativan during a panic attack makes you a junky unworthy of medical treatment) then into the procedure they pause and say "well that's the biggest ulcer i ever saw. Maybe he wasn't lying about pain". I hope nothing for the worst for every single doctor in there that dealt with my husband. The most inhumane treatment I've ever witnessed in a hospital

AMAZING!!! I literally sat in the ER in my hometown hospital for 4 hours and finally left. Then I drove to St Annes and all within less than an hour was seen and discharged. The nurses are so friendly and sweet and Dr Wilson, the er doctor, is super thorough. He also made sure that we were more than ok before discharging us. I don't understand how one ER can have so many doctors and nurses running around but not seeing patients and here at St Anne's they literally are super busy but 3 different nurses stopped in and asked if we were ok....
