About ASSMCA — Mental Health and Addiction Services Administration
ASSMCA Mental Health and Addiction Services Administration in Bayamón, Puerto Rico is an addiction treatment center for adults. They were created under Act No. 67 in 1993 after the unification of the Department of Addiction Services and the Auxiliary Secretariat of Mental Health of the Department of Health.
Division of Children, Youth, and Families
They have a special department called the Division of Children, Youth and their Families. This department organizes and governs the needs of children and youth regarding mental health and substance use disorders. Family and caregivers are permitted to be involved with the treatment of their child.
Children are offered services that are cultural and language appropriate and fulfill physical, emotional, social, and educational needs. Levels of treatment provided for children include residential, intensive outpatient, and outpatient services across the island.
Children are treated by psychiatrists, social workers, counselors, pediatricians, physicians, nurses, occupational and recreational therapists, and peer counselors.
TASC Youth Program
The TASC Youth program here works with juvenile offenders who are involved in criminal activity or are at risk for being involved in criminal activity because of substance use. Youth are placed in a treatment center.
TESA Program
If your youth needs treatment for substance use and/or co-occurring mental health disorders, you can enroll your child in the TESA program. Youth ages 12 to 20 years old are treated for substance use in an effort to minimize the risk of adult addiction disorders and criminal charges.
Medication assisted treatment (MAT) clinics provided through this organization offer detox and treatment for clients with an opioid use disorder. Anyone addicted to gambling or betting can receive free services including psychoeducation, group therapy, and individual therapy. The TASC program allows a judge to dismiss a substance related offense after completion of treatment.
If you need substance use treatment the center can provide you with a referral to one of the facilities they govern. As an administrative authority, they are knowledgeable about the type of treatment you need.

Clinical Services
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.
Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.
