About the Facility

Coastal Harbor Health System is an acute mental health hospital for adults, children, adolescents, and military, in Savannah, Georgia. Offering dual diagnosis addiction treatment programs and medication therapies.

With two specialist facilities, Coastal Harbor Health System has the expertise and the treatment specialists to understand and treat mental health disorders and addiction. They offer a full continuum of addiction care, including clinical assessment and treatment planning, outpatient treatment, medically monitored detox, community residence, recovery focused care, skill development, and comprehensive aftercare.

Coastal Harbor Health System has a full complement of clinical staff — including registered nurses, certified counselors, nurse practitioners, and psychiatrists — to provide comprehensive mental health assessments. This evaluates patients for substance use disorders and/or co-occurring mental health conditions and informs the treatment plan.

The Psychiatric Residential Treatment program is for children and adolescents struggling with medical health problems. There are three programs to choose from: the residential program, the acute inpatient program, and therapeutic foster care.

The residential program is designed for ages seven to 17 with a range of behavioral conditions, including trauma, mood disorders, self injury, psychosis, autism spectrum disorders, and co-occurring disorders, and those who haven’t responded to outpatient treatment. The acute inpatient program is for patients aged four to 17 who have been experiencing behavioral disturbances and functional impairments. Specialist treatments for both residential programs include psychological evaluations, private school, comprehensive treatment planning, group therapy, recreation therapy, GED preparation, vocational coaching, and individual therapy.

Therapeutic Foster Care is for children in need of a supportive family environment to thrive. Coastal Behavioral Healthcare has a dedicated team to support individuals and families in need of this service.

The inpatient campus at Coastal Behavioral Health is a 50 bed acute inpatient hospital for people with mental health and/or substance use disorders. The program incorporates a mental health assessment, comprehensive treatment planning, individual and group counseling, medication management, skill building to enhance coping skills and symptom management, and aftercare.

The Monticello Campus also offers Day Rehab for those contemplating recovery or those in the process of achieving recovery. The program includes individual, group, and family therapy, supporting abstinence, skill building, community resources, educational support, and vocational coaching.

The outpatient clinic treats addiction and/or other co-occurring conditions. The program includes a thorough clinical assessment, individualized treatment planning, medication support, individual and group counseling, medication management, CBT, trauma-focused therapy, 12-step facilitation, and psychoeducation. Sessions are held several days per week, depending upon the individual’s circumstances.

The Return to Readiness Treatment Program is a four-to-six-week program providing integrated mental health services for active duty military and veterans who have substance use disorders and/or mental health conditions. Treatments include PTSD support, cognitive restructuring, relapse prevention, anger management, grief therapy, civilian reintegration support, EMDR, exercise and recreational therapy, and more.

Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and most insurance plans are accepted. Each facility accepts voluntary and involuntary referrals.

book iconAlcoholism

Alcoholism is a pattern of alcohol use that involves continued drinking even when it causes problems. Alcoholism is also characterized by a physical dependence on alcohol, which causes the body to experience withdrawal symptoms when alcohol is not present. Due to this physical dependence, medically-supervised detox is often necessary to safely recover from alcoholism. Alcohol rehab in Georgia offers a three-step process of detox, rehab, and maintenance to help individuals recover from alcohol addiction.

prescription iconDrug Addiction

A quality drug rehab in Georgia can help you overcome addiction. This environment is designed to help you address the complex issues contributing to drug dependence. The goal of treatment is to give you the tools you need to make a full recovery.

head-side-medical iconDual Diagnosis

In Georgia, specialized dual-diagnosis addiction treatment programs address co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health conditions. Care levels include outpatient, inpatient, and partial hospitalization. Therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy, or dialectical behavioral therapy, equine therapy, mindfulness-based therapy, skills training, and recovery groups — like 12-step — support you in achieving sobriety and sustaining recovery. Developing the tools to establish a solid support system (or strengthen an existing one) will also increase your chances of long-term recovery success.

file-medical iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

Dual-diagnosis rehabs in Georgia can help to support individuals struggling with both mental health and substance abuse through holistic treatment programs that address both issues simultaneously. Co-occurring disorder treatment typically includes counseling, medication support, therapy, group sessions, and skills training. This integrated approach treats the whole person and improves recovery outcomes by equipping participants with the necessary skills to continue their recovery.

prescription-bottle-pill iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

bed-front iconInpatient

The adult psychiatric inpatient program provides intensive 24-hour support in a secure setting for patients 18 and older with ongoing psychiatric and substance abuse problems. After resolving the immediate crisis after admission, their experienced team of psychiatrists, nurses, and therapists develop a highly individualized treatment plan while taking care to insure the safety of the patient within the hospital setting.

clipboard-medical iconMedically Assisted Detox

Medical detox is the process of ridding the body of addictive substances in a medically supervised setting. If you become chemically dependent on a substance like alcohol, opioids, or benzodiazepines (like Xanax or Ativan), quitting abruptly can cause uncomfortable or even dangerous side effects. Licensed medical professionals ensure the process goes as safely and comfortably as possible while monitoring you 24/7 and administering any required medications,

truck-medical icon24-Hour Clinical Care

At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

house-medical iconIntensive Outpatient

Clients enrolled in an intensive outpatient program (IOP) travel to treatment centers for specialized care multiple times per week. Intensive outpatient treatment allows clients to receive robust care while continuing to live at home. Most programs require between nine and 20 treatment hours per week, with the frequency and intensive of sessions decreasing as clients stabilize. Services generally include a combination of addiction counseling, medication assisted treatment (MAT), recovery-focused life skills training, and holistic therapies.

car-building iconOutpatient

Outpatient rehab enables clients to receive addiction treatment while continuing to work and reside at home. Many programs offer evening, night, and weekend services so that clients may receive treatment on their own schedule. Outpatient treatment modalities typically include addiction counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, and/or medication assisted treatment (MAT). Many programs also provide step-down care, including partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP), and standard outpatient services, to align with clients’ evolving needs.

book-medical icon12-Step

Participants in 12 step recovery programs focus on personal growth to address the emotional and psychological factors contributing to their addiction. 12 step recovery is rooted in spiritual development, but religious affiliation isn’t required. Regular group meetings and individualized support with the help of self-selected sponsors promote participants’ sobriety as they work through the 12 steps, gaining insight into their addiction, taking responsibility for their life choices, and releasing control over that which is uncontrollable.

house-medical iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Animal Therapy

Animal therapy (aka pet therapy or animal-assisted therapy) can be very healing, as it allows patients to bond with animals, who give unconditional love. This is particularly useful for those who suffered trauma by the hands of people, who may be able to trust and form closer attachments to animals than humans at certain stages of rehabilitation.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Experiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Family Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Individual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.
