About Community Hospital – Behavioral Health

Community Hospital of San Bernardino (BHSB) — Behavioral Health is a full-service hospital offering mental health rehabilitation services in San Bernardino, California. They treat adult clients with various conditions with inpatient and intensive outpatient services. Their multidisciplinary team specializes in treating developmental, emotional, and behavioral concerns.

Clients in the inpatient program reside at the psychiatric wing throughout treatment, so staff can monitor and assist them as needed. Inpatient care is designed for clients with severe symptoms. Treatment plans are personalized to meet the needs of each client. Treatment options include individual therapy, group therapy, evaluations, spiritual support groups, and education groups.

Their intensive outpatient program (IOP) continues the intensive treatment of the inpatient program but allows clients to live at home, visiting the treatment facility on a fixed schedule to participate in treatment. It utilizes the same treatment options as the inpatient program but places a greater emphasis on group work.

All treatment at BHSB includes aftercare planning. Aftercare helps clients build a post-recovery plan, typically involving referrals to other programs and identifying community recovery resources.

Many private insurance plans (like BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, Anthem, Cigna, Beacon, and others) cover some or all of the rehab costs. Clients should confirm coverage with their plan first, as out-of-network benefits may vary.

This place has 1 star constant reviews for a reason.. i was a patient here for my first time ever back in march due to suicidal thoughts. I actually put myself here. The way i felt like a prisoner, but i felt extremely bad for others more than myself. The guards and nurses were treating them so badly. Arguing, yelling, making fun of patients! made me cry. I even made a complaint on a certain nurse who is extremely verbally abusive but they sent me back a letter saying this place shows no wrong doing please from deep down in my heart as a human being, if you re reading this.. this is the last place i would ever go or even send anyone i love here.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

This place is supposed to help people feel better but it is beyond doing that. Unfortunately one of my family members stayed here to try and get help and was met with a horrible experience here. The place is dirty, the staff is rude and try to avoid giving there names because they are afraid for us to report them for being so unprofessional. Doctors avoid trying to talk to you here when you ask to speak to them about your family members care plan. One of the doctors is very nice thou, Dr. Nayack he used the phone translator my family needed because they knew no English. Unfortunately the doctor over the weekend was not so splendid he did not use the phone translator for my family member instead he went to go speak to them while they were eating lunch and told them they weren't going home. Unfortunaly they couldn't advocate for themselves with the poor English my family member knew. I do not think it's right he did not use a translator for them. He wouldn't speak with us instead he hid and beat around the bush avoiding us because he knew he messed up and didn't know how to take accountability. The next morning they were released by the nice Dr. Nayack who did properly use a translator. Thank you. One of the nurses actually was rude to me while visiting she thought I was a patient and yelled at me to stay out the hallways I explained to her that I was here visiting and was told to wait here so I could talk to the doctor. She kept being rude, i was told her name was Nurse Truddy or Judy something like that. My family memebr had a roommate that was constantly yelling getting naked and just staring at her throughout the night and threw things at her as well for 2 nights. Finally the last night there they moved her rooms because of our constant complaints. Honeslty I can tell family members of patients here need to be there voices sadly. Please if your loved ones are here be on it with them and make sure they are getting cared for.

Please if you have love ones. Do not allow them to be put in San Bernardino Community Hospital-Behavioral Health West. The nurses are rude to patients and the place is dirty. There is no proper area to visit loved ones and have some privacy because most of the patients go in that same room and start yelling or trying to sit in the same table. Most of the nurses just hang out in the front near the door where the doorbell is where you ring to go in. Doctors try to hide and avoid your calls when you want to know about your loved ones wellbeing. It's just awful dont know how this place is running sadly. I feel for the patients there who do not have families to advocate for them.

They are extremely unprofessional. I called to get an update on a family member and the one that answered had an attitude and told me he was not there and hung up on me. I called the hospital number directly and they were more nicer there and gave me the information I needed and I was able to talk to him. If that's the way they treat a family member trying to get an update on a loved one I can imagine how they treat their patients there. If I could give zero stars I would.

I was taken against my will because someone lied and said I wanted to kill myself. After I spoke to the doctor he assured me that they would let me go that night or the following morning. They instead made me come into a room and change into a paper thin clothes. I tried to explain to them that the male doctor I spoke to said I was going to be released and asked if this was necessary. This terrible women told me they told me that it was and if I didn't change they would drug me and charge me themselves. I cried and changed and afterwards 4 to 5 men came in strapped me to a bed and drugged me anyways. As they were doing this one of the men pulled down my underwear exposing my private parts. They were overly aggressive and put something over my face at one point and I couldn't breathe. I was having the worst panic attack because of there behavior and tried to explain to them that I have PTSD and what they were doing was wrong. Afterwards they came in 2 or 3 more times to drug me unnecessary again! I woke up in a different room and had no idea how I had got there. I have tried to get past this experience but it haunts me. Please do not send people you love here!?! It will not help them! It will mess up their mental health even more than a already is. It's been a few months and I think about it everyday and I cry because of what they did to me here. Please find another way to try and help people because this is NOT it.

I called multiple times for staff to try to tell my fiance was not there, I keep getting transferred and told multiple times that I must have the wrong Hospital. They treated him like a dog and yell at the patient. They don't tell you any rules so my fiance didn't know he could even call until I called the hospital multiple times demanding to speak to him. His nurse told me "I'm a travel nurse so I don't know whats going on" excuse me, that's completely unprofessional. As his nurse you should be able to tell me the care he's receiving. She tried making up a story about him refusing to leave the room and sleeping all day. For him to say that they put him on sleeping medication which is why he was sleeping. This hospital is completely unprofessional! Dirty! And the staff treat the patients like dogs. My fiance said they yelled at him and other, that they would talk down to them. I saw one of the nurses shave a patients head in the middle of visiting hours! and real professional playing slasher films all day in a mental facility. I tried reporting and immediately the next day the staff started to treat my fiance differently. They got mad on the phone yelling at me saying we don't abuse patients when I tried to express concerns on care. Requested for the director to call me back about my concerns never received a call.

Worst experience I've ever encountered. They treat the patients with contempt. And their routines are vigorously monotonous. Often I felt like I was trapped there but staff (most of them) very unprofessional and borderline in violation of human rights.

The staff is very unprofessional. The rules and daily routines were not discussed with me beforehand and left me feeling trapped there. Treats everyone with the same level of care rather than adjusting to meet the needs of each individual patient.
