The facility is on a hill that overlooks the ocean in Dana Point. They treat adults with substance use disorder and also dual diagnoses, such as substance use and depression.

The facility offers detox with 24/7 supervision from a clinical team. Detox is done through their partner facilities while the mental health services are at the campus in Dana Point. Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal. The length of stay at the detoxification program is determined according to the specific needs of the patient.

Treatments

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Clinical Services

Animal therapy (aka pet therapy or animal-assisted therapy) can be very healing, as it allows patients to bond with animals, who give unconditional love. This is particularly useful for those who suffered trauma by the hands of people, who may be able to trust and form closer attachments to animals than humans at certain stages of rehabilitation.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

I recently spent 30 days at Alter Health in Dana Point, and I can’t speak highly enough of the experience. From the moment I arrived, I felt safe, supported, and surrounded by compassion. The facility itself is absolutely beautiful — serene, clean, and designed for healing. With a small group of only six clients, there was a strong sense of community, and I received plenty of personalized attention. The staff-to-client ratio is excellent, and I was able to have frequent one-on-one therapy sessions, along with support whenever I needed it. The therapists and staff truly went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable, cared for, and progressing in our healing journeys. The food was also a highlight — healthy, delicious, and thoughtfully prepared. Every detail of the program felt intentional and supportive. I can honestly say my time at Alter Health was life-altering. I left with tools, insights, and a renewed sense of peace. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a place to heal in a truly nurturing environment.

Alter Behavioral Health in Dana Point is a judgment-free zone that offers a very safe environment and attentive staff throughout your stay. I came for mental health help to further my self development since it had declined prior to the stay and understand the cause(s). The chef, who I'd rate 12/10, creates outstanding dishes. However, the food schedule can become repetitive, so I hope they can introduce more variety from time to time. Thank you Jessica for the best plates I’ve ever experienced and most random songs we’d sing to. The staff, especially Ebaukalam (Ebay) and Shad, are simply exceptional. Ebaukalam, from the initial intake to the last interaction, has been a beacon of light and a great conversationalist. I'm genuinely grateful for our deep conversations, his attentive listening, and his kind demeanor. Shad has been a father figure during my stay and has provided unique and insightful perspectives. Thank you both for making this experience that much more enjoyable and meaningful. The therapist, whom I'd rate 12/10, is outstanding, and I cannot rave enough about him. He is authentic and incorporates various modalities into each session, demonstrating flexibility and a calm demeanor. He is the best therapist I’ve ever had, and I’m grateful he has been a part of my growth journey. Thank you. Case manager Kahley is incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and open to answering any questions that come to mind. I appreciate both Tom and Kahley for the drive-by sessions (quick meets, questions, epiphanies). Thank you. The jacuzzi is a beautiful way to unwind after a tough day; the running water eases the mind and body, particularly after workout sessions. Other fun ways to unwind after group sessions include enjoying the views on the balcony, soaking up the sun, meditation, reading, writing, and conversing with any staff member. No one is ever too busy to be there for you. Paid outings occur every other weekend and include diverse activities such as visiting the Getty, kayaking, whale watching, and beach days. The staff is open to any outing ideas you may have. Unpaid outings occur on alternate weekends between the paid outings. Residential treatment is an absolute standout experience. The entire team is fully committed to being your support system. From the chef to the case manager, nurse practitioner, therapist, and care coordinators, everyone authentically cares for you. Alter has completely transformed my life. The amount of care the staff has for their clients is 2nd to None. I would recommend this program to anyone struggling with addiction. Focusing on the underlying issues behind my addiction was key to my ongoing sobriety. It's unfortunate that Alter no longer offers substance abuse treatment. Nonetheless Alter is amazing when it comes to helping people with Mental health issues. Thank you Alter especially Ryan, Lindsey, Shad, Brandon and all the rest of the medical staff for everything you have done to help change my life. For giving me life back.
