About El Paso Behavioral Health System

Known for its vibrant border culture with U.S. and Mexican influences, El Paso, Texas is home to the El Paso Behavioral Health System. You can access specialized outpatient substance abuse and mental health treatment at their hospital.

Outpatient care allows you to live at home and tend to daily responsibilities during treatment. Their programs incorporate proven therapeutic interventions, including evaluations, individual, group, and family counseling, customized treatment planning, and medication management. Sessions are available on weekday mornings and breakfast and lunch are included.

Patriot Support Programs

What stands out most to me is their patriot support programs. Veterans, military personnel, and their families can access targeted care to address the unique experiences of military service. You can participate in personalized care for addiction, trauma, depression, PTSD, and more. They also incorporate expressive therapies, mindfulness techniques, and spirituality for a holistic approach.

Therapeutic Recreational Activities

I also think it’s great that they provide therapeutic recreational activities. Discovering the joys of sober fun is essential to promote sustained recovery. You can explore new hobbies and activities to gain stress reduction and self expression outlets. You’ll also benefit from creating lasting relationships with peers on similar paths.

LGBTQ+ Friendly Care

Another standout feature I noticed was their LGBTQ+ friendly services. They strive to create an affirming and inviting space for members of the LGBTQ+ community. You can access individual rooms and gender specific placement based on your preference. They also connect you with specially trained LGBTQ+ navigators, patient advocates, and clinicians who understand your needs.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

During rehab in Texas, you'll deal with underlying issues that contribute to addiction. By addressing these challenges and learning healthy ways to cope with them, you'll develop strategies that help you live a drug-free lifestyle.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Military Program
Their psychiatrists, therapists and clinical staff have a special interest in and dedication to serving the military population. They use an integrated, therapeutic approach using evidence-based therapeutic modalities, including CBT, CPT, EMDR, motivational interviewing, DBT and traditional 12-step facilitation.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Couples therapy helps couples learn to control emotions, trust each other, and communicate more effectively. It can be useful for short term intervention for a specific issue or for working on the relationship long term.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

The right life skills training will help you build the skills you need for recovery. You'll learn how to solve problems, improve your social life, enhance your mental health, and make good decisions. This is a key component of drug rehab programs in Texas.

What you eat has a significant effect on your mental and physical health. That's why many addiction recovery programs in Texas incorporate nutrition therapy in their treatment. This therapy teaches you how addiction affects nutrition, what foods are best to eat during recovery, and how to shop for and prepare healthy meals.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

I just want to take the time to thank the El Paso Behavioral Health IOP team for providing the services that my child needs I wanna say thank you to Gloria and Mr. Silvas for all of your help so again thank you for everything that you’re continuing to do for our child as she receives the services she need to get her through this time. I would give you a five but that’s assuming that everything is working perfectly there’s always room for improvement so in my opinion, I would just give you a 4.5. I wish that there was a half but I do greatly appreciate everything that the team is continuing to do for my child.

My visit to this location was very iffy. Just the fact alone that I didn't willingly go into it and they kind of just put me in their kind of deduct the score of it but I'd say that the text that I had personally were all really nice I really liked Alex and Josh specifically they were very nice and also the food isn't really great there but it's better than School food that's for sure.

This is an nightmare they threatened me if I took out my granddaughter cps was gonna get involved. I think cps needs to check that institute were children are being medicated left and right.. As my granddaughter got medicated the guy nurses fist pumped each other and laugh .Of coarse my granddaughter was screaming she didn't want to get medicated it took 5 grown males t throw her down and hurt her back..The staff tells you stories about how bad the inpatients act. Like a horror story..when you know ur loved one doesn't act that way she was placed in there for counseling and therapy. Her four days in there were hell!! Do not take your love ones there. They get pleasure in medicating your loved ones! Close this place down and have cps go and check to see all wat there doing to some patients!!!!

DO NOT BRING YOUR LOVED ONES HERE, THIS PLACE IS A HORROR PLACE! MY SISTER BROUGHT MY NIECE HERE WHO IS 12 YEARS OLD TO BE HELPED AND THE ONLY THING THIS PLACE DID WAS TRAUMATIZED HER. MY NIECE WAS PUSHED DOWN AGGRESSIVELY BY 5 MALE NURSES TO BE SEDATED. WHILE SEDATING HER THEY FIST PUMPED EACH OTHER AND LAUGHED. MY NIECE WAS ONLY THERE FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AND ALL THIS HAPPENED TO HER. LUCKILY MY SISTER HAS PULLED HER OUT OF THAT DISTURBING FACILITY. THE STAFF IS RUDE THEY DID NOT LET MY MOM AND I VISIT MY NIECE DURING VISITATION. THE ONLY THING THIS INSTITUTION CARES ABOUT IS GETTING PAID BY THE PATIENT'S INSURANCE. THIS HORRIBLE PLACE NEEDS TO BE SHUT DOWN!!! NOT TO MENTION WHEN TRYING TO CONTACT YOUR LOVED ONE THEY LEAVE YOU ON HOLD FOR AS LONG AS 20 MINUTES JUST TO HANG UP. ALL YOUR ATTEMPTS TO REACH OUT TO YOUR LOVED ONE JUST GETS DENIED!!! DO NOT BRING YOUR KIDS TO THIS NIGHTMARE OF A FACILITY!!

Out of a scale from 1 to 10, I would give El Paso Behavioral a 7. I had to repeatedly advise them the reason I was there for in recovery and they dismissed my issue. Thankfully I was given almost the same meds that was needed for my recovery. Most of the techs had the patience and were very caring to myself and the other patients in the rehab/detox program. I do have to say though that there were a few techs that were rude and commanding with very little patience. All of the nurses took great care. I really want to thank one of the techs Maria, she was so sweet while she took care of us patients. I also want to thank Sara Acevedo for actually listening to me on what I went in for. She went above and beyond her job by providing me transportation to the facility and would come and check up on me with another nice gentleman in the unit I was in, She took care of the issues that did arise between the doctors and discharge process and followed up with me after care.

When my Wife went to UBH she weighed 84 lbs. After 14 days there she weighs 64 lbs. I believe they robbed me of my time to spend with her and she is now in Hospice. I don't think serious effort was made to feed her or exercise her. The Doctor's Oath is to first do no harm.
